Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODST

I don't know what your expectations were for Halo 3 ODST, but I wasn't expecting much. Bungie seems to have been playing down the significance of its latest entry in the Halo series, following year-long back-and-forth contradictions about what exactly Halo 3 ODST even is. Such issues didn't inspire much confidence, but it's a new Halo game, right? Of course I'm going to play it.

But while I'm sure to have any number of memorable gaming experiences before this year is up, I'm convinced Halo 3 ODST will stick with me. Halo 3 ODST is important. It's a game worth putting on a pedestal, pointing to the rest of the industry and demanding many more games like this.

This isn't a review and really has little to do with the Halo franchise; it's needed applause for the quality workmanship that went into a year-long product from a AAA studio in an industry increasingly focused on quick, cheap downloadable games or Hollywood-style epics.

The latter trend Bungie itself has perpetuated and no doubt will continue to endorse, but I sincerely hope Halo 3 ODST sells enough to send an encouraging message: risks, even if it's especially calculated and low risk, are a good thing. Is developing a new Halo game a risk? No, of course not, but letting Bungie craft a new Halo game sans its iconic character in a gameplay style that looks like it plays exactly like the pervious Halo installments but is, in fact, subtly very different in narrative and substance, is an important takeaway for Bungie, Microsoft and the industry. Branding it Halo guarantees sales numbers, thus providing an opportunity for significant innovation.

Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODSTIf Halo 3 ODST's numbers are big, it's because of the Halo brand -- but what Bungie did with that opportunity is key. Rather than spitting out a series of deleted scenes with Master Chief, Bungie produced a noir-inspired detective tale with a gameplay style both iterating on past experiences and simultaneously trying something completely different. Best of all, Bungie produced this extension in roughly a year, an unheard of development sprint for a major release these days. But it happened because of realistic expectations and scope, which isn't the gaming norm. Halo 3 ODST may not have been conceived as the game it became, but the lessons from the experience can be applied quite broadly.

There are very few instances these days where developers take advantage of the built-in audience from a successful game to challenge expectations. Bethesda Softworks played with that a little bit during the Operation Anchorage expansion for Fallout 3, which felt like Fallout 3's take on Call of Duty. Again, that happened in an instance where Bethesda was working on a smaller development cycle and building upon the confidence that they could take a categorically safe risk because they can expect gamers to support them, based on Fallout 3.

Small, talented teams with modest expectations and realistic ambitions can do great things. Halo 3 ODST is proof. I'd love more of that, but even Bungie admitted to me at PAX that it's unlikely Bungie will always have a smaller team working on something. Once Halo 3 ODST was finished, that team was bundled into the massive workforce behind the upcoming Halo: Reach. That's disappointing.

Halo or not, we need more games like Halo 3 ODST. Agreed?

Why doesn't Bungie create "noir-inspired detective tale" that isn't based on the back-story, enemies, weapons, and gameplay mechanics that isn't Halo? Because that would actually be risky! They designed a product that would be 'Halo-ish' enough to get the money of the die-hard fans and that tried to distance itself from the same hero that so many consumers were getting tired of. Bungie just straddled the fence. I would have a lot more respect for their creativity if they actually made a different game. Not an FPS game that stands apart only because you're not Master Chief; not an RTS game that uses no new designs or story elements. If they want credit for being creative, they should make SOMETHING ELSE! If they just want more money, which I'm confident is the true case, Bungie should just change their name to Halo Studies.

They should also avoid using the 'copypasta' philosophy of level design. I didn't like it in the first Halo game, and I don't like it now.

I rented the game and it was a fun diversion worth the rental, but considering I finished it and took it back halfway through the weeklong rental, would I want to pay $65 for it? No way! Halo 3 was worth the full price tag because it had that great, infinitely replayable multiplayer that I spent weeks of time with. ODST is a GREAT expansion, but to call it a full game and try to charge accordingly is a grave insult to the intelligence and wallets of Halo fans.

I'd rather spend my money on uncharted 2 (ps3) and call of duty mw2 (xbox 360 version)

Wowwwww dude, all these people that are bashing ODST on here need to go away. I mean they claim that Bungie has been ripping us off since Halo 2 yet whenever a new game comes out they say that they bought it and feel cheated... THEN STOP BUYING THEM!!! I thought it was a great game for practically setting a development record. I'm sure such wise and inspirational people can think of other things to spend $60 on to keep them off these articles bashing stuff when hardly anyone gives a crap what pet peeves they have with Bungie's work. If you're all so knowledgable when it comes to game development, then make your own. If you can't top these well established developers, then leave the criticizing to the critcs because we actually find them credible. And YOU? ehhh not so much.

PS- I love when people with names like "RRODisback" get on here and preach of the sinister ways of microsoft and all that is related to them... not. Go home fanboys; the Gamer Civil War has gone on long enough lets grow up a bit and learn to accept that fact that some people won't agree with you or like the things you like. I'm sorry but life isn't all about what you want... *tear tear*

You all calling ODST an "expansion" and not worth $60 are stupid. Seriously. For what you get (a great campaign with tons of replay value, Firefight, the entire Halo 3 multiplayer experience [worth half the price of the whole package] amongst the bigger things) it's so worth it. Not Bungie's fault you're broke and don't want to buy it.

If we are not taking price into account then yes we do need more games like ODST. A spinoff that offers more of the same with something new is good. I'm not being sarcastic either. I can't really think of any examples like this but maybe let's say Uncharted had a small spinoff were you use Cloe in more of a stealth based game. Maybe in Gears of War you play from the perspective of on of the other faceless, nameless grunts in a RECON mission. I don't know what other games might do but stuff like ODST can really help grow the industry but price is a part of it. If you are telling your fanbase that you are making an off shoot, a spin-off or something a bit experimental then you have to accept that your fans believe you will not be charging like it's a full game. If you found that you may have over delivered then be happy that your fanbase will grow and they will buy your next product in even greater numbers.

I havent gotten the game because of the price and that it is much more like a 30 dollar expansion pack.I hope its good but another huge reason why i didnt get it is because of its 6 HOUR CAMPAIGN (I can do that in the morning!!) and the fact that it has the SAME EXACT ONLINE PLAY AS HALO3!!!!!This was definately supposed to be an expansion pack.It probobly is good but not a good GAME it is a GOOD EXPANSION.If I were u only get it if ur rich if not be smart like me and wait for a price drop.

I don't see how people can complain about the campaign's length. There's a reason why it comes with a second multiplayer disc. I have ODST, MW1, and Killzone and they all have campaigns under 6 hours. If you're buying any shooter, not just ODST, for the campaign then you're wasting your money.

Lol! I seriously can't believe that some people actually think this game is 3 hours long. Spoonpwner you are right on the money! Thumbs up for you sir!

While I didn't like the price which may be worth it if you like MP, but didn't buy the extra maps, I totally agree with him, this game was great. DD at about 30 bucks would have been a lot better though, one of the main reasons why I finished it and traded it in to G$ for 40 bucks towards Uncharted 2.

I always hope that people are past judging the quality of a game based on how long it takes to finish. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'll +1 to Patrick's article. ODST was my favorite Halo campaign so far. The fact that you aren't Superman anymore makes the gameplay much more strategic and intense. The story is more fleshed out than any of the previous games in the series and told in a unique way. The soundtrack is phenomenal as well.

Adding to a very solid and polished campaign you have Firefight, which I could see myself playing constantly, if I had friends who would play it.

Honestly, I think ODST's biggest problem is with perception. The fact that it was originally announced to be a retail expansion at a lower price point will forever be nagging in the back of peoples' minds. That's not something you can blame Bungie for, though. If you know the story of how things changed in the development process, it makes perfect sense that they made the game more than they were originally planning and had to charge accordingly.

    Anyway, that's my two cents.

Copying and pasting what I said in a previous reply, because I think if people aren't clear, maybe they oughta be:

    --------

[Some of] you missed the point of his article, which I knew would happen just because the "Halo" title is in the headline. The two main points he's trying to make are:

    1) Risks, big or small as they may be, are good for the industry in that they allow changes in pace, ranging from narrative concepts to gameplay innovations.

    2) Expansive, epic games, as well as quickly developed DLC-type games are not the only areas where developers/publishers can potentially create hit games.

    --------

He's not saying ODST is the perfect model, he's saying that in terms of bringing something new to the table for us gamers, Bungie was on the right track conceptually. Experimentation can never be wrong (in this case, at least).

Of course, tell me if I'm wrong, Patrick.

I played it on heroic and It took me 11 hours to complete. I also played it on normal the second time, and it took me 9 and a half hours.

So whats with all these people saying its a 3, 4, or 5 hour game, are you stupid or do you just like making up crap to prove a point.

fanboys, just, go away. One seriously had the nerve to say it was a 3 hour game with 3 maps. Try learning something about the game before you go trying to put it down. The campaign lasted me about 7 hours, the game include EVERY halo 3 map ever released WITH 3 new ones, forge and theatre and still there, and the new firefight mode. Not to mention recon armor. I loved this game and had no problem paying the $60.
