I don't know what your expectations were for Halo 3 ODST, but I wasn't expecting much. Bungie seems to have been playing down the significance of its latest entry in the Halo series, following year-long back-and-forth contradictions about what exactly Halo 3 ODST even is. Such issues didn't inspire much confidence, but it's a new Halo game, right? Of course I'm going to play it.
But while I'm sure to have any number of memorable gaming experiences before this year is up, I'm convinced Halo 3 ODST will stick with me. Halo 3 ODST is important. It's a game worth putting on a pedestal, pointing to the rest of the industry and demanding many more games like this.
This isn't a review and really has little to do with the Halo franchise; it's needed applause for the quality workmanship that went into a year-long product from a AAA studio in an industry increasingly focused on quick, cheap downloadable games or Hollywood-style epics.
The latter trend Bungie itself has perpetuated and no doubt will continue to endorse, but I sincerely hope Halo 3 ODST sells enough to send an encouraging message: risks, even if it's especially calculated and low risk, are a good thing. Is developing a new Halo game a risk? No, of course not, but letting Bungie craft a new Halo game sans its iconic character in a gameplay style that looks like it plays exactly like the pervious Halo installments but is, in fact, subtly very different in narrative and substance, is an important takeaway for Bungie, Microsoft and the industry. Branding it Halo guarantees sales numbers, thus providing an opportunity for significant innovation.
If Halo 3 ODST's numbers are big, it's because of the Halo brand -- but what Bungie did with that opportunity is key. Rather than spitting out a series of deleted scenes with Master Chief, Bungie produced a noir-inspired detective tale with a gameplay style both iterating on past experiences and simultaneously trying something completely different. Best of all, Bungie produced this extension in roughly a year, an unheard of development sprint for a major release these days. But it happened because of realistic expectations and scope, which isn't the gaming norm. Halo 3 ODST may not have been conceived as the game it became, but the lessons from the experience can be applied quite broadly.
There are very few instances these days where developers take advantage of the built-in audience from a successful game to challenge expectations. Bethesda Softworks played with that a little bit during the Operation Anchorage expansion for Fallout 3, which felt like Fallout 3's take on Call of Duty. Again, that happened in an instance where Bethesda was working on a smaller development cycle and building upon the confidence that they could take a categorically safe risk because they can expect gamers to support them, based on Fallout 3.
Small, talented teams with modest expectations and realistic ambitions can do great things. Halo 3 ODST is proof. I'd love more of that, but even Bungie admitted to me at PAX that it's unlikely Bungie will always have a smaller team working on something. Once Halo 3 ODST was finished, that team was bundled into the massive workforce behind the upcoming Halo: Reach. That's disappointing.
Halo or not, we need more games like Halo 3 ODST. Agreed?

Loved ODST, can't wait for Reach. Fanboys stop fighting. If you would just play the game instead of judging it on it's looks you would see that it is actually a fantastic game, and that Bungie did a great job working on it. I don't understand why people can't just get along and play there respective consoles without bashing each other for no real reason. I've said it before and I'll say it again: There both good consoles, you are entitled to your opinion, but that still doesn't mean that you need to get on here everyday and mock people just for there choice in a gaming system. I'm talking to the 360 fanboys who get on PS3 articles too.

@nickqwear
You really didn't read the article did you? It was about game companies taking risks.
EKG
YEAH!!!!! LISTEN UP DEVELOPERS!!!!! We want more 4 hour games!!!! We want games that recycle the Multiplayer from other games!!!! We want only ONE new mode in our games!!! And we want you to build that game on a severely aging engine!!!! And then, after all that, we want you to charge us $60 for that game!!!!!
This article is everything that is wrong with the industry. Bungie did not take even a small calculated risk with ODST, they simply too advantage of people too stupid to not buy a 4 hour game with the word HALO on the box.

"Halo or not, we need more games like Halo 3 ODST. Agreed?"
AGREED.

Dear G4 Staff: We want real news worthy gaming articles with qualified journalists... Not Fanboy chearleaders!
What am I supposed to do with this article? How is this news or worthy of being displayed on a gaming website? Can I get biased free actual news please? Instead of tweets and blogs from non-professionals who get paid to write BS ?
And on that note... How the he** are you going to say games should be more like ODST?????????????????????????? ??
You want 5 hour games? That are nothing new, more of the same, nothing special and complete and down right extortions of the loyal fans to the series?
I am sick and tired of these second rate games using a popular title to milk consumers of their money. And for the record, I think the Halo games are great but ODST is a flat out rip off and fans of the franchise should feel exactly the same.
Now I can already see some people replying, "Well if you don't like it you don't have to play it" which is exactly what I am going to do. The purpose of this post is so others can see that you should'nt be satisfied with simple 4-5 hour carbon copies of past games for 60+ dollars!
For me, I want both quality and quantity. I want a great game with a lot of content. Call me greedy but it's what I expect and if the majority of consumers expect this as well, that's what you'll get.
As long as we keep handing these companies our money, buying the dirt they put out then they'll keep doing it. We as consumers deserve an epic style of game and we shouldn't have to settle for anything less. I bet if ODST sells very well we'll see something like it or maybe even worse in the future. If we want it to stop, then we have to stop supporting them.
If you like the game though, good for you. I in no way am trying to say the game sucks and you're dumb for liking it. What I'm saying is, for 60 bucks, a customer deserves more than a 5 hour identical twin of the past halo games. We really need to get the word out:
STOP SUPPORTING THE TRASH THESE DEVELOPERS THROW OUT! DEMAND A BETTER GAME, STOP BUYING SECOND RATE GAMES AND THEY WILL BE FORCED TO MAKE BETTER GAMES!
ODST will not be getting my money and if enough people can understand and feel the same... Hopefully the industry will see it too and actually start to care about what they throw out there.

I'm not a Halo fan, but I did buy Halo 3 because it was fun when I tried the demo. Anyway if someone enjoyed the game they should always make more.
So here's to more Zelda, Crackdown, Fable, Saints Row, and Gods of war. If it's fun LET'S HAVE MORE!!!That's what games are about,....FUN!!!!
The Emperor's Champion
All Halo games thus far have sucked, except maybe Halo Wars which I haven't played.
I just don't understand why anyone likes these third rate FPSs.....
The market is FLOODED with FPS games, and for whatever reason you choose to like one of the most bland and act like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Everyone loved Modern Warefare, and THAT made sense. That was an actual good game. How you guys can even play Halo after that is beyond me.
Whatever....
Go ahead, thumbs down me into oblivion for speaking what you all MUST know to be the truth.
lamuerte777
wen i bot this game i felt like a wasted 60 dollars because the only think that i got was a short campaign and the only good think was firefight that docent have matchmaking so if i bot a 360 for ODST only how the hell y so pose to play firefight and the last think i got was 3 new maps for the same multipleyer that i have so for me we need more games like Halo 3 , COD4 and Uncharted 2. what do you think?
Oinkness
SHUT THE FUDGE UP, KLEPEK!
ODST is to games what Cars 2 was the Disney's Cars. A much less epic expansion to something that already wasn't as great as it should have been. What you're basically asking for is more 6-hour long games with minimal effort put into story and gameplay. Come on dude, that is exactly what gamers DON'T want. Yes I bought ODST, and I beat it on Legendary in 1 day with a friend on the net... It was ridiculous. And for $60? Disgusting.
slain007
they are not much that are like ODST but there is lots of games that is BETTER than ODST
Mr.Rager
If you don't want to pay the price,DON'T idiots. I wanted to and I was happy with my purchase. And to the PS3 fanboys you can't comment because most of either haven't played Halo 3 or played at a friends house.
Lastly who are you to dictate what decisions a multi-million dollar corporation makes. They must be doing something right. I for one enjoy all the Halo games
-John-
After the disappointment of Gears 2, I've been using the "Yahtzee Method" of getting excited for games, ie not getting excited at all... ever.
So maybe it was my low expectations, or the unique take on the traditional Halo gameplay, or Firefight, but I love ODST!
Yes, it is a little overpriced, but I spent $60 on the game on day one, beat the single player in a few days, and I have not regretted buying it at all. Yes, it s 5 hours, but it s a great 5 hours. Plus, Firefight is the new definition of awesome. Oh, and new Halo 3 maps!
And for those that think I m an XBot: Look a few paragraphs above; see I was disappointed with Gears 2. Also, I REALLY want a PS3, if only for MGS4!
So no, I m not an XBot, I just love awesome games. And Halo: ODST is an awesome game!

some people say they are "sick of everybody complaining about the price." and. "They(bungie) did what they could" and, "people seem to forget that this is a business" and "companies need to make money." and so on. Well I'm not implying that this game is sub-par by any means, it's just that I'm sick of "gamers" trying to defend corporations! If we accept any and all inferior products they sell to us, whats stopping them from doing even worse to us. If you like it, fine, play on. If you, it seems to be the majority of adopters, think it is a rip off, please complain or dont purchase things you are not happy with!
Notafanboythatiknow
Patrick, I see your point. I have a PS3 and will not play ODST, but I heard the game is pretty good. Some of us disagree, not with the quality of the game, but the price. I would not take anything away from Bungie creativity, but would $30 been too cheap. Bungie is using the same engine as in Halo 3, right? Consumers are becoming more smart and will pay $60 dollars for a game that offers 12-15 hours of gameplay in the single campaign and has an online component.
I would rather not say, but most of the opinions in this topic are driven by fanboyism.
jungleman67
crysis warhead was made in a year and it was cheaper and longer than this. better than the original. wasn't much of a risk though.
ZyloWolfBane
Spoken like true sheep everyone, the LAST thing we need are more halo games.
ThaSaltShaker
Halo churns out a lot of passion... it's amazing.
WildfireFox
You're right. The industry needs /even more/ games I will not play.
Shooters ain't for everyone.
lookatthisguy
As far as the pricing goes, I'll admit when I first picked it up it was only because I wanted a new shooter, and I liked the film noir influence, though I was a little put-off by the price.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, when I got home and opened the case:
1) New campaign. To each his own, though I liked it most out of all the campaigns (except for maybe the last mission in Halo 1).
2) FIrefight mode--good for casual gamers like me, that don't take the time to get good enough at multiplayer (or else I just suck inherently).
3) All the add-ons and maps for Halo 3 multiplayer--I'm a tightwad and had yet to buy all the new DLC on Live, though friends (and some family) kept pushing me to do so.
4) Halo Reach Beta Invitation--can't say much about that yet, but it's still an exclusive of sort.
In the end, I felt it merited $60. Though of course, ultimately the game's only worth as much as the end user values it. No sense complaining about the cost of a game you don't even have interest in playing (PS3 fanboys), and no sense defending a game's price because of it's title or developer (Bungie and/or Halo fanboys).
Not calling anyone out, just trying to stave off flames. Heh--call me a firefighter with an opinion.

@Vinny87
They need a Gears of War: Saving Private Carmine spin-off.
