Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODST

I don't know what your expectations were for Halo 3 ODST, but I wasn't expecting much. Bungie seems to have been playing down the significance of its latest entry in the Halo series, following year-long back-and-forth contradictions about what exactly Halo 3 ODST even is. Such issues didn't inspire much confidence, but it's a new Halo game, right? Of course I'm going to play it.

But while I'm sure to have any number of memorable gaming experiences before this year is up, I'm convinced Halo 3 ODST will stick with me. Halo 3 ODST is important. It's a game worth putting on a pedestal, pointing to the rest of the industry and demanding many more games like this.

This isn't a review and really has little to do with the Halo franchise; it's needed applause for the quality workmanship that went into a year-long product from a AAA studio in an industry increasingly focused on quick, cheap downloadable games or Hollywood-style epics.

The latter trend Bungie itself has perpetuated and no doubt will continue to endorse, but I sincerely hope Halo 3 ODST sells enough to send an encouraging message: risks, even if it's especially calculated and low risk, are a good thing. Is developing a new Halo game a risk? No, of course not, but letting Bungie craft a new Halo game sans its iconic character in a gameplay style that looks like it plays exactly like the pervious Halo installments but is, in fact, subtly very different in narrative and substance, is an important takeaway for Bungie, Microsoft and the industry. Branding it Halo guarantees sales numbers, thus providing an opportunity for significant innovation.

Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODSTIf Halo 3 ODST's numbers are big, it's because of the Halo brand -- but what Bungie did with that opportunity is key. Rather than spitting out a series of deleted scenes with Master Chief, Bungie produced a noir-inspired detective tale with a gameplay style both iterating on past experiences and simultaneously trying something completely different. Best of all, Bungie produced this extension in roughly a year, an unheard of development sprint for a major release these days. But it happened because of realistic expectations and scope, which isn't the gaming norm. Halo 3 ODST may not have been conceived as the game it became, but the lessons from the experience can be applied quite broadly.

There are very few instances these days where developers take advantage of the built-in audience from a successful game to challenge expectations. Bethesda Softworks played with that a little bit during the Operation Anchorage expansion for Fallout 3, which felt like Fallout 3's take on Call of Duty. Again, that happened in an instance where Bethesda was working on a smaller development cycle and building upon the confidence that they could take a categorically safe risk because they can expect gamers to support them, based on Fallout 3.

Small, talented teams with modest expectations and realistic ambitions can do great things. Halo 3 ODST is proof. I'd love more of that, but even Bungie admitted to me at PAX that it's unlikely Bungie will always have a smaller team working on something. Once Halo 3 ODST was finished, that team was bundled into the massive workforce behind the upcoming Halo: Reach. That's disappointing.

Halo or not, we need more games like Halo 3 ODST. Agreed?

There's a lot of Halo haters on here....I wonder how many actually own an XBOX 360 in addition to their PS3. Says a lot about people when they dislike a system/game so much that they don't own yet they're still willing to take the time out and blog negatively about them on a forum.

no we dont need games like this. unless its $20...

and pls dont add the maps we already own... at least give an option if the player want to buy the maps then at least charge them less...

$60 for this game is just crazy.

Jeez...if you needed another does of Halo, you probably enjoyed this game like myself. It wasn't supposed to be Halo 4. Quit crying about milking the series. Comics, movies, television series, and even toys are milking their franchises with pre-quels, remakes, and sequels. Gear up, man up, and shut up an play.

What I gather from people who actually played this game is, that ODST seems like the Resistance 2 co-op with cut scenes and map packs. If you played the R2 co-op you know it was good, but not worth full retail if it was a stand alone game. Ratchet&Clank:Quest for booty and GTA4:Lost and Damned came out roughly a year after the previous installments and those were great expansions which were in-expensive. So if anything, we need more games like those or better yet, we need more developers like Insomniac and Rockstar.

ODST's storyline was extremely interesting! The campaign was enjoyable, but a little too short. FireFight keeps me busy for a long time with friends or by myself. I have beaten the game already, but im currently going back and trying to complete it on Heroic difficulty. The game has many secrets, suchs as the story of Sadi, which, I have found 26 audio logs already. The Superintendant A.I. was a great idea!-congrats on whoever thought of that! He really helped me in the game while I was trying to find the audio logs. This was an over-all enjoyable game, and one of the best Halo games I've played. 5 out of 5.

I have ye to play ODST, but i can say for certain i will, if only for the expansion and the new perspeective and multiplayer. What i like about the Halo franchise is not it's multiplayer (Call of Duty has me on that, but i still enjoy Halo's) or it's story (just a bit too weird, but still likeable) but its great advertising. I have found that i enjoyed many of the Halo 3 and ODST commerrcials especially the one with the burial (ODST). They are have such atmosphere.
However, i have to agree with the "haters" at some points. I know for a fact the game isn't too long and i feel that it's more of a great expansion pack (think all 4 Fallout 3 expansions in one) than a full blown 60$ game. ALso, SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING COUNTDOWN 3 2 1 The game with a cinematic (as i was told by my friend so dont get pissed if im wrong) thats basically says "That was one helluva night." That is no way close a game.

All in all, i will play ODST and might even buy it if it endears itself to me enough. The game looks great and could done better than it has if they made the game longer. everything's there like a new perspective and plot, so why no hold off for a few months and maybe tweak the plot from "glorified expansion status" to "full blown game". bungie could've made more money that way. But in no way at all is the game bad.

Was the $60 price tag excessive? That's a matter of opinion. If all you're going to do is play the single player on normal and blow through it in a few hours and that's it, then yes it's probably not worth it. But that's because you're not taking advantage of the whole package. Go back and play on heroic or legendary, try to locate all the audio logs, play the awesome firefight mode with friends, or play the good old Halo 3 Multiplayer with every map available.

I understand why many people don't like Halo and/or ODST. But I'm happy with my purchase so that's what matters.

This game sucks nuts. All you do is find recon points, and firefight is nothing more than throwing a bunch of enemies at you. Tell me, how is this creative? We need more games like UNCHARTED 2 where the developer puts a lot of thought into its campaign, and multiplayer. Adam Sessler "The best single player I have EVER played."
NOW before you get riled up, I just wanna say that people who get infuriated when people are saying things like this, ARE the biggest fanboys off all.

HONESTLY, why get so riled up about a company you don't work for? Jesus...

I can understand the hype surrounding this game; the Halo brand tends to have that effect. The quick and dirty naturen of the Halo games is appealing to all who play video games. It doesn't take much to get into, and if one puts enough time into it, it can become very competitive. The trouble with lies in the fact that this is all it becomes: Quick and Dirty. The Halo franchise sits with a story line that has been rehashed in thirty other genres, and the continuity of it is wearing quite thin. The graphics; while polished and beautiful when these games were first released are starting to dwell as dull. The graphics of ODST just don't stand up to the standard of the industry nowadays and the fact that this game has sold so many copies is disturbing in that it doesn't encourage progress in these areas.

In the story line department, we can look to games such as Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain for our inspiration for story direction. These games have what appears to be in-depth and epic story elements which are original in their presentation as well as a kick-back to older types of story-telling. The presentation provided in the Halo series, while influential in the year when the first and second games were released; is starting to smell of old news. The matter in which these stories are presented consistently reminds one of a Michael Bay film. The epic set pieces and almost comically serious atmosphere don't lend well to the type of story telling that actually provides an in-depth experience for more "Serious" gamers out there.

While the gameplay provided in Halo 3/ODST is fantastic in it's own right; it doesn't bring anything new to the table. The innovation dissapeared from the Halo series long ago, and all that seems to be left is an empty shell of what used to be an innovative powerhouse in the First Person Shooter genre. The controls still remain tight, the aiming systems and detection systems clean, but alas, there just isn't any much more than that. These games lend themselves beautifully to competition and online play because of these gameplay factors and they will continue to do that for some time. However the fact still remains that these games aren't providing the intellectual fodder that is becoming required in todays gaming industry. Here's hoping for innovation in the gaming industry and the eradication of stagnance.

I haven't played ODST so IDK, but I am glad to see that you wrote about something that I wasn't expecting. From what I can tell, ODST is a bit of a rip-off in terms of what you get for your $60 so I don't want to see more of that. In terms of trying something a little different with an established franchise, I'm always all for that. I think the same can be said about R* and GTAIV with the added realism and physics. I could do w/o some of the other aspects of GTAIV (the friends activities) but I like the added realism and improved gameplay mechanics.

I cannot believe how far the standards of the xbox community have fallen. you're all perfectly content letting microsoft sell us half a game, yet making us pay full price. and then this article praises microsoft for taking a risk. he even contradicts himself by admitting that releasing a "halo" game isn't really a risk. this is the same bs sony pulled when they released gt prolog. wake up people and see that youre just getting raped for every cent that you have and these jerks at g4 are making it easy for microsoft and sony to rob you blind. dont buy half a game please, it only encourages game makers to rush and release substandard games before the holidays.

after the marketing around Halo 2, i really expect nothing from Bungie or Microsoft when it comes to Halo games. I do think that Bungie sort of has to kneel at the alter of MS, so I don't blame them as much.

when you market a game in such a deceptive and treacherous manner as with Halo 2, you're bound to irk some devoted fans. the way Halo 2 was done, is the sole reason i haven't played Halo 3 or ODST. it's one of the major reasons I haven't bought a 360 yet as well.

I get that it's a business and making money is paramount and lying and decieving people into buying products is how you make profit, but don't release a spin-off as a full complete game, which is what ODST is. the reason there is this discussion is because of coporate greed. seriously what are the corporations going to do when they have EVERYONES money...

to the Halo fan boys, you got cheated bad. you're blinded by your zealousness, you're exactly the consumer MS wants, to bloody stupid to realise when you're being duped. Granted your fervor for Halo is honorable right and just, however your tolerance of being cheated out of a full product is not, if you don't speak out about being cheapted MS will simply bend you over every time, i gurantee it because they don't give a flying @#$! that you love the game aside from that you'll give them your hard earned or your parents hard earned money for it.

More games like this piece of crap? Are you serious? Lets face it, the only good halo was halo 1 and the only thing good was the multiplayer. Halo as a story is pretty lame. And for 60 bucks? Come on man, the GOD OF WAR collection is going to be 40 bucks and those two games together beat anything halo has to offer, the main character is also a REAL spartan by the way. And also im tired of people saying the HALO franchise will be as big as star wars, it will never be. The games industry does not need more games like this we have plenty and they bring nothing fresh or new to the table. We need more games like UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES thats what we need. We need more games that make you feel like your a part of the experience. I hate games that dont have a good story and i think thats why I dont like HALO, its lame very lame. I want more games like inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, More MGS, Batman AA, KILLZONE 2 i mean how awesome is humans invading the alien planet for a change, Heavy Rain, Warhawk which i know was only multiplayer but the best multiplayer experience i have ever had and of course more GOD OF WAR. Notice how most were ps3 exclusive, yeah thats not an accident ps3 has all the best games hands down. And I know heavy rain and uncharted 2 have not come out yet but i have played and beaten uncharted 1 and i dont see how that game didnt sell as good as it should have i mean the game was like a freakin movie and it was fun as hell. And heavy rain i have been keeping up with this one and trust me heavy rain is going to be like no other game this generation. I want games to do what movies do to me and thats the direction sony, uncharted and naughty dog are going. HALO is a dead franchise with nothing new and honeslty i dont see how people keep buying this crap, not one of my friends(who all have 360's)bought this game and dont even plan to rent it. Im not a sony fanboy i love games and if the 360 had all those games i would still list them and say xbox has all the good games. Ha i cant believe Forza is trying to compete with Gran Turismo have any of you played the Forza games? Not for me I guess.

Please no more halo just give it up master cheif is actually a woman lol, wait, you know........that would be awesome, and the end of halo reach master chief takes off his helmet and it turns out he is a she! A hot one too. It would make me feel like the first time i beat metroid. All in all i think HALO is just boring thats my problem with it. The only thing that ever kept me playing part 1 was the multiplayer. I know my post is probably not gonna go so well with all you xbots ha lol.
