Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODST

I don't know what your expectations were for Halo 3 ODST, but I wasn't expecting much. Bungie seems to have been playing down the significance of its latest entry in the Halo series, following year-long back-and-forth contradictions about what exactly Halo 3 ODST even is. Such issues didn't inspire much confidence, but it's a new Halo game, right? Of course I'm going to play it.

But while I'm sure to have any number of memorable gaming experiences before this year is up, I'm convinced Halo 3 ODST will stick with me. Halo 3 ODST is important. It's a game worth putting on a pedestal, pointing to the rest of the industry and demanding many more games like this.

This isn't a review and really has little to do with the Halo franchise; it's needed applause for the quality workmanship that went into a year-long product from a AAA studio in an industry increasingly focused on quick, cheap downloadable games or Hollywood-style epics.

The latter trend Bungie itself has perpetuated and no doubt will continue to endorse, but I sincerely hope Halo 3 ODST sells enough to send an encouraging message: risks, even if it's especially calculated and low risk, are a good thing. Is developing a new Halo game a risk? No, of course not, but letting Bungie craft a new Halo game sans its iconic character in a gameplay style that looks like it plays exactly like the pervious Halo installments but is, in fact, subtly very different in narrative and substance, is an important takeaway for Bungie, Microsoft and the industry. Branding it Halo guarantees sales numbers, thus providing an opportunity for significant innovation.

Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3 ODSTIf Halo 3 ODST's numbers are big, it's because of the Halo brand -- but what Bungie did with that opportunity is key. Rather than spitting out a series of deleted scenes with Master Chief, Bungie produced a noir-inspired detective tale with a gameplay style both iterating on past experiences and simultaneously trying something completely different. Best of all, Bungie produced this extension in roughly a year, an unheard of development sprint for a major release these days. But it happened because of realistic expectations and scope, which isn't the gaming norm. Halo 3 ODST may not have been conceived as the game it became, but the lessons from the experience can be applied quite broadly.

There are very few instances these days where developers take advantage of the built-in audience from a successful game to challenge expectations. Bethesda Softworks played with that a little bit during the Operation Anchorage expansion for Fallout 3, which felt like Fallout 3's take on Call of Duty. Again, that happened in an instance where Bethesda was working on a smaller development cycle and building upon the confidence that they could take a categorically safe risk because they can expect gamers to support them, based on Fallout 3.

Small, talented teams with modest expectations and realistic ambitions can do great things. Halo 3 ODST is proof. I'd love more of that, but even Bungie admitted to me at PAX that it's unlikely Bungie will always have a smaller team working on something. Once Halo 3 ODST was finished, that team was bundled into the massive workforce behind the upcoming Halo: Reach. That's disappointing.

Halo or not, we need more games like Halo 3 ODST. Agreed?

Oh, I love Halo. I'm a good gamer, but my boyfriend doesn't want to play arcade games with me cause he's afraid that I'll kick his ass. :D
By the way, do you like mkv player?

I happily enjoyed ODST. Before getting the game I went back and finished my Halo playthrough and also went through the Halo 2 campaign. I skipped Halo 3 since that was most recent and still in my head but Halo 3 ODST felt fresh and familiar to me. I enjoyed the campaign, the characters, the different perspectives you experienced, it basically was the format of a good book to read.

seriously people have got to stop wasting $20-$30, i played all the campaign and firefight and it did not feel a whole lot different, i loved the original halo when it came out, but after its been out for years its just boring, if this game was say $30-$40 it would be perfect, but $60 is just wayyyyy overpricing for what u actually get.

i think halo 3 odst was a very good game, it has all the multiplayer maps, firefight (horde mode on steroids), and a campaign so good i almost started to cry after playing it. Good job Bungie, good job.

i really really liked ODST. it had a great single player experience with good gameplay atmosphere and story. i loved playing as the support guy who isn't necessarily a bad-ass. firefight felt like horde mode from gears of war 2, but more refined. firefight is indeed a lot of fun. however i ,along with many many many other gamers, did not like the fact that i was able to play through the campaign with my friend, while it was on normal mode, in 4 and a half hours. i get a bit disgruntled when a beat a game in 9 hours. mirrors edge was a really slick and stylish game with a new concept. when i played through it the first time i had quite a lot of fun. but the replay value for me was not quite worth it. however i did get a cool messenger bag for pre-ordering the game. halo 3 odst was a great game, it just left me wanting more from the single player, but only because it was so darn good.

I argee! There are only a tiny handfull of developers that can make a good game and too often they spend years just to make one game that I will play through in a week. I don't need a new graphics enigine every freaking time I buy a game. What I want are new experiances, I want new levels. New pieces of the story, New places to go. If their was a game like ODST released every month I would buy it. As it is I buy 3-4 games a year simply because there are just not enough games that I care about.

You guy's complaining about the price?, get over it! Did anyone complain about the price of section 8? that was a terrrible game but it has a 'new' name. ODST costs $60 because that is what games cost these days. You wanted a DLC? Those aren't free either and are usually just a couple hours long. You wanna bitch about length? Be a Man and play the game on a difficulty level where it is actually difficult, ODST is just as long as every other Halo game and made in only a year.

ODST is the most fun I've had in a game for a year. The other $200-$300 I've spend on this game have been a freaking wast.

look the game was good. as it stated above, it is nice to finally see a game that was fun and had a decent story-line. no it is not a super 100 hour long campaign, it does not need one. This game reminds me of when games used to be FUN!!!!!!!!!!! not like coming home and having another job. So what if it is a short game, IT WAS FUN!!!!!!! think about that next time you play it. just because a game is not a mega blockbuster game like modern warfare 2 or a DLC game like shadow complex does not make it a bad game.

What are you talking about? ODST was painfully mediocre, why do we want the game industry to come out with more games that are just OK. All I know is I'm glad I got ODST from gamefly and didn't buy it because I would have felt extremely rippedd off paying 60 bucks for two nights worth of campaign gameplay. No online matchmaking for Firefight mode? WTF? a couple of new map packs for Halo 3 multiplayer...please. If they charged 40 for these short, half done games they wouldn't be so bad, the only reason they threw in the multiplayer disc is because the game isn't worth 60 bucks by itself.

@ AngelsandDemons: Forza 3 and Assassins Creed 2 are not $80, those are the special edition versions.

Just beat the game...I must say the value is questionable. I hadn't bought all the downloadable maps so i guess the extra disk was what I ended up paying for. I should have just rented it. As for the article...reminds me why I got out of PR...more OVERPRICED EXPANSION PACKS dubbed as games...Patrick...I hope you were just playing devils advocate to stir some response to possible the last possible article I will read of yours about the topic...

G4 what happened to you. This is one of the worst articles ive ever read. More games like ODST?? Even Sessler admits the new uncharted is one of the best games... but do you guys put up an article for that?? no. we get more Halo praise. i wasnt even on xbox live when ODST came out cause i knew Xbox would have a field day with it.

I can't agree at all. This team should have been shifted to the Reach team from the start. This was MS trying to get some holiday line up in. I love Bungie, Halo is old news. You may like it if you like the story, but for a new game this is stupid. Listen I'm not saying the game is bad. Don't fix what isn't broken right? I'm not even going to say it's a bad value. But what 2 million sales prove is people will buy something no matter how innovative it isn't. This game doesn't bring anything truly new to the table, unlike almost every other bungie game. Reach will most likely do that. This is something that needs to stop. If a company comes out with a NEW game it needs to be NEW. The online, something i mainly played Halo for, is the same thing, they didn't even add anything besides new maps. Call of Duty did this as well. MF was great, then a year later WaW comes out and its the same thing with different maps and a new story. Thats Bull. For any amount of money I'm spending on a game ,whether it be 20 or 60 bucks, I expect something I haven't played before. I'm sorry you are wrong. We need this mentality out of this industry, this is for the movie industry.

It's Halo...quit your yappin and shell out your 60 bucks....they set that price because they know people will pay for it. Economics 101 my friends....have you noticed...Forza 3 and Assassins Creed 2 are set at $80...how the hell can they justify that?...guess who has it on pre-order?

Patrick, I get you. Based on most of the replies here, your point was ignored and obfuscated by the usual internet noise surrounding this game. But I get you.

Having a Halo shooter where the Master Chief is NOT the major protagoist. I'd say that was very risky. Not only was he not a playable character, there barely a mention of him. Not even a cameo.

Bungie also used a narrative structure that's risky in general. Flashbacks linked together by open-ish levels.... as opposed to the uber-linear format Halo, and shooters in general, tend to follow. That's another risk.

Not saying that ODST is some revelation in game design. It plays it safe in so many other ways. But I do recognize that it took some creative risks for a popular franchise with a rabid fanbase. That's kinda cool.

I did enjoy the game but it should be priced at $40. He even mentions that the game only took about one year to develop. If a game with a six hour campaign sells really well than other developers will take notice. They will say, "look at HALO 3 ODST, why should we spend two years making a ten hour game." They didn't even add any new multiplayer. I know that firefight is new but it is not a complete multiplayer package. Just compare HALO 3 with its 10 to 12 hour campaign, full multiplayer suit, and the forge. With ODST you get a six hour campain and firefight mode. Thats not even close to the same ammount of content, why the same price?

Excellent. I think we definitely need more overpriced games. I was just thinking why I am going to pay what a game deserves? I would much rather pay $60 for a game that is worth $35 at most. Along with the theme of the day, which seems to be a battle for stupidity, I just wanted to let everyone know that I went ahead, so good for me. Wait, no I don't think I want to win this one, oh well can't lose em all.

I agree with your opinion about ODST, but I hate when people only buy stuff because it's got some popular title slapped on the title. At least buy it to give it a chance; luckily, ODST delivered.

I wish people would stop complaining about the price and length. If you're gonna get it, you're gonna get it, if not, you won't. Besides, this article has nothing to do with price or (though is pointed out) length.

Though, to argue the price point (even though I do think it was slightly on the high side). If you think about it, its actually an 80$ value. 40$ for the Campaign/Firefight. 10$ per Halo 3 Multiplayer map pack equaling 40$ (Heroic, Legendary, Mythic 1, Mythic 2). You could even go so far to say as the Halo Multiplayer is 30$ worth. Of course, if you previously bought the 3 other map packs, that 30 goes away and if you have Halo 3, you loose the 40 from the multiplayer leaving you with 50$ worth resulting in an slightly overpriced game (which I feel).

As for the length, it all depends on the player. It took me, on Heroic first play though, 5 hours to complete and on my second play through, on Legendary, took 4 hours. Other commenters mirror my experience and others took twice that to complete. It all depends on your experience with Halo.

Now, as for the article, I agree with Patrick. Game developers need to take more risks. Most of the games I like are mostly sequels and even games I don't like are sequels resulting in me not going out to get them because it's "the same thing." If they would either do a new, shorter IP, or something completely new that would make me interested in playing it because it's something different. Sure, some Developers/Publishers take chances but they aren't very big risks and not enough do take the risks.

    Take more risks, people.
