Warner Puts Stop To 'The Flash'

IGN recently interviewed Charles Roven, a producer who worked on The Dark Knight and was attached to the long-rumored project for a feature film adapatation of The Flash. One would think that with the recent shake-up over at DC and its redefined partnership with Warner, that any DC comic film project would more likely see the light of day. However, according to Roven, (at least for The Flash,) that does not seem to be the case:

"I was involved at one point with The Flash," said Roven. "And Warner Bros. came to me and said, 'The work that you've been doing hasn't yet resulted in something that any of us, including the filmmaking team, feel could be greenlit as a movie. We're trying to accomplish something that takes into account the entire, rich DC character world, and we'd like to pull it back. That doesn't mean that you aren't going to be a part of it. We just want to take a different kind of approach. Do you mind if we try that?' If we had something that was really working…"

It's been ages (well, about 8 months) since we last heard any news or rumors on the proposed feature film adaptation of the DC Comics speedster. However, even back then, the outlook for this project seemed problematic, at best. From the scrapped Justice League: Mortal project that was being floated around in early 2008 (which was to star The O.C.'s Adam Brody as Flash,) or the solo film in question, (of which, Scott Porter of Friday Night Lights was rumored to land,) the look of the field of comic films for the next 3-4 years certainly did not seem to be a welcoming one for the Red-Streak himself.

Roven would go on to comment on a screenplay for the film by comic movie kingpin, David Goyer, which did not pan out as Goyer would leave the project. Another attempt was made with David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, Shanghai Knights.) However, they seem to have hit this rather unavoidable roadblock. Roven comments:

"I've been making movies with Warner Bros. for 15 years, so that was fine, but I hope one day there's a way for me to get re-involved in the project. "

Will we see a Flash film? Probably -- just not for a long while.

Update: IGN ran a follow-up piece clarifiying that the project IS still moving forward with a script by Dan Mazeau with Geoff Johns consulting. Flash fans can relax.

Making the Death of Superman would have tremendous upside for the studio. Think about it. You already have a full proof way of drawing in the audience even though Superman dies. You add a plethora of commercially viable characters to get their asses whooped by Doomsday (try them out on the public). And presto!!!!! You have the next 10 years of DC superhero movies ready to go.

They either need to get Superman a decent villain to fight (Doomsday) or they need to switch to a different DC Super Hero. I would much rather see a movie about the Flash than Superman any day.

This is false. Do some actual reporting, guys. The Flash is still moving forward. Dan Mazeau is writing the script. Geoff Johns is consulting. Roven hasn't even been on the project since January.

Why don't they just do some kind of "Infinite Crisis" story line for a movie (it can be a two or three-part movie if necessary, a-la Lord of the Rings) instead of trying to "get it right" with the individual characters to stand alone in their own movie?

Just follow the X-Men formula with doing a few movies with everyone (like the Justice League) and then have spinoffs of the popular characters if rabid fan appreciation warrants it.

    -M

P.S.- When I said "...follow the X-Men formula..." I meant "...follow the X-Men formula with the exclusion of X3."

looks like Warner and DC are dropping the ball big time. By the time they get around to making some good comic based movies Marvel/Disney is going to be way ahead. Just based on the number of films Marvel already has a huge head start and with everything they've got in the pipeline we have multiple Marvel movies every year for the foreseeable future. What does DC have? A Green Lantern movie that isn't starring Nathan Fillion and more Batman that's sure to be another watered down version of a classic Batman story arch.

@LarcenousLaugh - the time it takes them to pull their heads out of their collectives butts is no guarantee that they'll actually make a decent movie. In my experience the more time & people it takes to get the movie going the less likely it is to be good.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. over the recent troubles the newest Firmware update v3.0 has allegedly caused for some PlayStation 3 owners.

Discovered by the Courthouse News (via Gamasutra), the lawsuit filed by plaintiff John Kennedy claims "thousands of Sony PS3 video game owners who downloaded a system software update required by Sony found that the update caused their PS3 units to malfunction and actually damaged the hardware on many units."

It also claims Sony offered to fix any PS3 systems that sustained hardware damage caused by the update for $150. Sony soon after released a new update, v3.01, that was supposed to fix these issues, but allegedly caused more problems, claiming the update "not only failed to address problems introduces by Firmware 3.0, it caused new problems," such as failing Blu-ray disc drives.

SCEA is being accused of, among other things, breach of implied warranty, negligence, and negligence misrepresentation.

The complaint can be read in its entirety here

They'll get it all sorted out eventually. Not making it now means that when it does come out there is less chance that it is complete crap.

@PS3realist - Outside of the the first Superman, there really isn't much that you can do with the character, which is always the problem they have had with him in the comics. You have someone that at his hayday could move a star and travel backwards through time, and you expect there to be drama when he really has very little to lose. I think Singer did a decent job with Returns, but they really need to start over and try to build a story where he is not lifting a continent into the sky.

I would expect to see the greater DC universe start to roll out in movies once they see how Marvel rolls out the Avengers. For once, we might actually have something done right. Thanks Jon Favreau.
