Retailer Game Crazy Closing 200 Stores

Retailer Game Crazy Closing 200 StoresIf your preferred video game retailer of choice is the Movie Gallery subsidiary Game Crazy then there’s a chance that you’ll be forced to take your business elsewhere very soon. As Joystiq reports, the retailer has announced that it will be closing 200 of its roughly 680 stores over the next month.

Game Crazy attributed the closures to an “unprecedented consumer/retail environment,” and went on to say that they were issued to compensate for underperforming stores. No real surprise there since it wouldn’t make much sense to close stores that are still bringing in acceptable levels of cash, but let’s not quibble.

Anyone here a regular Game Crazy customer? If stores near you close, where you expect you’ll do most of your video game shopping?

The store sucks, I have read a lot of complaints about it, personally I have only been there once and the store sucked I ran out and went to a Gamestop just to wash off the sour taste on my mouth.

sorry but anyone that buys or sells used games from actual stores is a moron. both sides win if you do it online. I was at gamestop the other day and they were actually going to sell someone a wii sports game for 20 dollars. Lucky for them my friend was there selling his and they cut out the middle man and they got one for 3 bucks. Gamestop probably would have given my friend a dollar for it. See they realize that a lot of people buying wiis aren't familiar with the value of certain games and people out there are thinking whoa 5 games for 20 bucks what a sweet deal.

I used to be a GameCrazy customer for numerous years...but after Hollywood Video was bought out by Movie Gallery...they really just lost sight of what a gaming store should be. They just didn't get it. After a number of management changes I decieded to take my business to GameStop. I hated it at first but the people at my local GameStop are pretty chill and my boy works there so he gets me his discount for stuff. GameCrazy...may you RIP...

Couldn't happen to a nicer set of guys. The ompany has been mismanaged for years. They hired in clicks of management teams from other companies, then were stunned at the favoritism that followed. They have been on a strick budget for years now, easily a 1/3 of what they used to spend even back in 2004/05. Plus they have had a raise freeze in effect for over a year now, and even tried to manage their light bils by cutting them off when the store was empty.

Conversely, one of our local Gamestops in a busy mall had 85 hours to share between 5 employees for 1 week, but expected double coverage every day.

I work at a hollywood with a GC and it blows cus my friends and fellow gamers are losing their jobs and i have to drive like an hour to get my copy of MW2 prestige and console. Plus i had a friend who worked at LAMESTOP and he says everyone their is lame. but i will get 7 games for 50 bucks in a few weeks when they do a 80% off sale. =]

Yeah, I'm a little confused. There are some GCs that are independent and some that are attached to Hollywood Video. I had no idea there weres some attached to Movie Gallery.

I've never heard of this place but it does suck that some are closing. What I don't understand is I live in Michigan and i dont understand why people hate gamestop so much the stores by me ive never had any body be mean and I know they dont give u a ton of money for your returning games but if it wasn't for them id have a ton of games collecting dust.

yo got my gta4 at midnight from gamecrazy! this place was way better than gamestop!!! gamestop employees just seem like they know everything and theyre better than every1 else... gamecrazy employees seem way more down to earth...but hey! thats just my opinion... and this also stinks because the closest one too my house got closed a few months ago because some1 lit the hollywood video drop box on fire...so now im gonna have to drive even farther to find a gamecrazy =(

I'm kinda bummed at that news. I've always only ever done business through my local Game Crazy. Good group of people in there, and their setup and new/used selection is top notch (helps if you preorder, which I do religiously, but how hard is that really? Just takes a little effort people). I'm sure this may not account for all Game Crazies, but it'll make me a sad panda if they close the one in my area.

(Movie Gallery owns Hollywood Video. One's on the West Coast, other is on the East Coast...)

I FCAKIN HATE THESE GAME STORE EMPLOYEES............

They don't even play games.......... they usually don't have the slightest clue.. I think the should only hire fellow nerds, that would love the job... and know how to serve the customer properly.

LOL!! The Hollywood video in my city has a Game Crazy in the center of the store. Its fenced off kinda like Hannibal's cell in Silence of the Lambs. Kinda sucks cuz they helped me when the emo idiots at GameStop told me they had a game I wanted for my son's b-day and said they would hold it for me. I raced all the way across town just to find out that another numnuts sold the game right after they put it on hold. They even took my name and phone # down so I could claim it easier.

I called their corporate, only to be shunned off by the a-hole I talked to. When I called Game Crazy and told them what happened, the manager felt bad and took $10 off the price. She was hot, too.

    R.I.P. 200 Game Crazy stores

this move was actually a good one...the plan is to close the least profitable stores and make room for new free standing stores in better markets...so all the people who comment on these boards about they're lack of a local game crazy will get one soon

We don't have a Game Crazy in Tampa so this doesn't affect me at all. Besides, we have a local store Play N Trade that is much better than Gamestop, and from the looks of it, Game Crazy as well.

Two of the ones by me are toast and lucky for me the third (where i pre-ordered everything) is staying. Probably ideal because the game store makes more money then Hollywood Video (2 years ago it was the other way). I dont usually have problems with GC however recently they hired this one guy who acts like its a issue when you come into the store and he cant figure out how to do anything.

The only times I went to game crazy was to find a game that was particularly sold out at all other major retailers.. when guitar hero 3 boomed I found it there and noplace else.. when wii fit was sold out everywhere I found one there. But I won't miss it if it's gone, it just happens to be near all the other retailers I shop at for my gaming needs, and if i'm desparate enough to make another stop along the way home, that's what game crazy was to me. :P

Well, this stinks. Game Crazy was the only game store I knew that had a disc repair service. They fixed any scratched discs really well. Unfortunately, the place was a lot farther than my local GameStop.

So, anyone know of a good place to get your disc fixed?

newegg.com, they have free shipping on all games (I think, at least all that I have seen) and (depending on what state you live in) you don't have to pay taxes on them! Other than that I guess I shop at gamestop. Except when i bought GTA4 from game crazy just to get the faceplate...

Forget them both. I go to Fryes or buy new from Amazon or used from Blockbuster. Even Best Buy will have a few games on sale and have better deals. It pays to shop arond for the best deal.

But if you need your mom to take you around to the store I guess you're stuck.
