When Sony Online Entertainment's PlanetSide launched in 2003, it didn't exactly set this planet on fire. The massively-multiplayer first-person sci-fi shooter is certainly ambitious, and according to diehards is a lot of fun, but it has never earned the numbers of more traditional MMOs like World of Warcraft.
It could have been technical hurdles and a lack of variety of battles, but, for whatever reason, PlanetSide always seemed like one of those good ideas that never quite took off.
Now that it's 2009, the technical hurdles could be cleared, and a few tweaks in level design could eliminate some of the repetition of the original. So the time is right for PlanetSide 2. -- and it's not just me who thinks so: Sony seems to have quietly revealed the game recently.
Sony Online Entertainment sent a mass e-mail last week to current and old PlanetSide subscribers, asking them to fill in a survey that would help SOE design the next generation PlanetSide. The email read, in part, "We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design." The original game will not be closed down, according to the email.
Further evidence: The company registered the domain www.planetside2.com on September 21, 2009.
Yeah, people! It looks like a PlanetSide sequel could be coming, but my question is: Will you play it? It seems weird to me that there isn't now, nor has there ever been a successful FPS-MMO. Is this because the FPS genre doesn't really lend itself to the rest of the MMO world? Or is that, essentially, games like Halo 3 already are FPS MMOs, in that everyone plays them and "exists" in the same space of rankings and leaderboards. What do you think? Will you pay a monthly fee (if that's the revenue structure) to play PlanetSide 2?

I'll play PlanetSide 2 if they fix the problems I had with the first one. I only had a few issues, but after playing for so long, they really started to bug me.
The main thing was the Command Rank system. Once a player got to the maximum command rank, they were given the ability to call in Orbital Strikes and talk to every single player in their faction. It was cool when there was only a few dedicated players at this rank who actually wanted to lead. But eventually more and more people got to that level and the Command chat degraded into a very public forum for people to argue or spam or whatever.
Some people only gained ranks for the Orbital Strike, and when a faction needed a leader, they refused to do it. You either had too many leaders or none at all.
Later on in the game's development, players were given the ability to switch factions. This allowed players to switch teams if it turned out a faction was suffering from a low population. Unfortunately people just used it to switch sides for a while and team kill.
Lastly, the base capturing mechanic just got old. They tried to mix it up with different game types, but it just didn't feel very rewarding after capturing the same base 100 times then losing again.
The good times I had playing PlanetSide were very good. The battles were epic, and community made you feel like you had an important role in the fight even though you were just one person. Simple things like hacking enemy vehicles, or laying down turrets around an outpost could change everything in battle. And when you looted your enemies, you were taking an actual person's gear. (I played the Terran Republic so I took special joy in stealing Jackhammers and Lashers from the Conglomerate and Vanu and using their own weapons against them.)
So... yeah, I'd play PlanetSide 2. I may not stick with it, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested. I don't think MMOFPS games are broken. They just aren't for everyone. If you have trouble playing as a team in Call of Duty or Halo, then PlanetSide and Huxley just won't cut it for you. Stick with the small scale if that's what you're good at. Trying to go it alone in PlanetSide just gets you killed a lot.(unless of course you're a good infiltrator.)

So, does anyone know where Huxley: The Dystopia is? I haven't seen that game in years...
NVM its in beta testing right now... If Huxley fails hard, then I hope Sony can fix MMOFPS's...

I tried the reserves, didnt get in so i never played it, but it should be good. if they use like cosmetic microtransactions, and other wise it is free, ill play it. you see battleforge, Quake live, and Bf hereos working well, so this could too.

I owned the original Planetside, and let me tell you guys, it is by far the best FPS OF ITS TIME. I'm not saying its mind blowing now, but when it came out it was amazing... it is still amazing even though their is a lack of other players. I truly hope that they come out with a Planetside two. That would make all my dreams come true!

I really liked the original planetside. It was very similar to Starsiege:Tribes, which I loved playing back in the day. I think it could be upgraded with modern day mechanics to be a really fun game!

needs to be damn good to deserve my subscription. It needs a F2P policy of some sort to get me interested, especially considering the first planetside (not a total failure in my eyes) having a kinda "transparent" feel.

Listen, this is a total bust. Never played the first one, but we all know fpsmmo are not that good. If MAG is a bust, dont bother with this one.

Ive never played the original Planetside but I've heard of it. The only way I'd consider paying a monthly fee for an mmofps would be if it had enough rpg elements to keep it from gettng too repetitive and obviously if it was well developed. I think you nailed it though Stephen. Games like Halo 3, the upcoming Borderlands, and M.A.G. all offer aspects of a mmofps. One could say f it aint broke dont fix it I guess but the idea of a good mmofps is intriguing though.
