If you were one of the people who missed Saturday's SNL (a demographic that's growing more and more these days,) you may have missed the live unraveling of a memorable (possibly fatal) botch from new featured player, Jenny Slate. In an otherwise uneventful premiere of the venerable variety show, which featured Megan Fox as the host, Slate was in a sketch with veteran cast member, Kristin Wiig as a "biker chick" who was to say the word "frickin" in just about every line. The ill-fated catchphrase attempt would be misspoken as Slate would end up accidentally uttering the other F-word (NSFW) in which "frickin'" generally serves to replace.
This is hardly the first time that the "dreaded word" has made its way on the air during the course of SNL's 35 years (by both cast members and musical guests.) However, history has shown that punishment for the deed can often depend on the question of whether or not the cast member is expendable. Perhaps, the most infamous and frequently-cited example of a cast member having the book thrown at him, was the 1981 incident of the f-word during the "Goodnights" segment by ill-fated Weekend Update Anchor, the late Charles Rocket. (Although, most of the cast members, as well as exec-producer, Jean Doumanian were purged from the show after that disastrous season, leaving only Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo to remain.)
SNL made headlines about a month ago when they cut female featured players Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins. (Although, I don't know why, as they cut featured players ALL THE TIME.) While the incident looked to be unintentional, it will be difficult to see what kind of repercussions (if any) will occur for Slate (who, with Nasim Pedrad, replaced the departed temp cast members.)
From the standpoint of an entertainment fan, I think the show has much more to worry about than a headline-generating botch. This isn't a story about the "offensiveness" of that word, but rather how network brass react to it being on the federally-regulated public airwaves. If anything, it was the only relevant moment of the show, which also had to squeeze THREE performances out of musical guest, U2. The show is currently in that place it sometimes ends up in some seasons, where they've hit the creative wall and need to once again find its own roots. (Funny sketches, a decent impersonator who legitimately lampoons the sitting President for the cold opening, etc.) They've clearly got some work to do, but they've also bounced back on more than one occasion.

I haven't watched SNL in years. I think the last one I saw was the first one Lindsay Lohan was on. Back when she was hot from Mean Girls. Think about it, most of the show is a waste, and if it's a really, really funny skit, it'll show up on the news or something on Sunday/Monday. No need to waste your time with the whole show.

SNL. What to say? Like many others, I don't think it's funny or relevant anymore. I watched the episode and thought to myself "Gee, I wish Megan Fox was naked". But not a laugh was uttered.
I really miss MAD TV. Really.

@LarcenousLaugh Yeah, people are way too sensitive these days. Even here they get worked up about things, though not on the same level. Try looking up Frankie Boyle on Mock The Weel, we get that on standard terrestrial TV and he's as harsh as you can get.
P.S. I watch the Daily Show just because of how well they make fun of America's baised news presentation.

I don't think Megan Fox did badly. She did the best she could considering how bad the writing was. I think people forget that she's just started to establish herself in the business.

I think a previous poster meant Megan Fox is as funny as she is talented, in other words she's damn lucky she's hot. lol Anyway the f-bomb made the premiere one to remember. Loved the reaction on her face and even the quiet audience murmurs afterward. You can't write this stuff! So now I assume every live show even after midnight will be forced to use a delay from now on, right? ha Damn that beetch Janet! haha

Megan Fox makes Lindsey Lohan look like a vestal virgin. She is a skank of the highest order. That being said, SNL stopped being funny or relevant 20 years ago.

Never got into Megan Fox myself...not enough figure.
Morgan Webb on the other hand....

Unfortunently America is too "What about the Children?" focused when it comes to watershed TV marks. You see Virginia, other countries around the world see nudity and swearing as adult concepts, and believe that if children are up past a certain point, they either have a. their parents permission to be up, b. their parents don't care therefore why should they, or c. they are smart enough to fool their parents and therefore are smart enough to handle the concepts of swearing or seeing boobs. But then again, the american public has more pressing things to concern themselves with, like matching up the president to hitler on the concept of public healthcare, or protesting a gay marriage/abortion clinic/any other right that doesn't affect them but they feel they must have a say in.

I can't be the only person in the world who thinks Megan Fox is overrated.

The biggest problem with SNL is that they haven't hired me.
Seriously though, I'm a huge fan of SNL and my ultimate goal in life is to make it on the show. But even I haven't watched it in a few years. I would, but I missed a few and my OCD wants me to watch them in order, even though they aren't really episodic. It's definitely worse since Ferrell left. And they didn't help a few years back when they cut Parnell and Sanz. I am pretty impressed with Sudekis and Wiig ever time I see them, though.

SNL generally misses the mark, but still has some solid sketches dotted around. The Live Lounge commercial was brilliant, and the Optimus digital short was pretty good.
30 Rock is hilarious, Tina Fey makes everything great.
U2 always seem to do 3 performances, which is annoying as they suck.
Finally, America needs to change some of it's rules over swearing. Why not a 9pm watershed like here on Britain, or better yet, do what the Europeans do and say screw it, swear when you want.

SNL has started to get better over the last few years, but if the season opener is any indication than look for another unfunny season. However the new Thursday primetime SNL is very good (last year too).
MaximusPaynicus
SNL suffers from chronic "Star Trek syndrome", where they keep a core group of writers together entirely too long, and said core of writers just get tapped out of ideas.
Although the SNL Digital Short was pretty funny.

SNL hasn't been good since the millenium rolled on over. When Will Ferrel and the rest of the rowdy misfits that served as the SNL cast for a good half of the decade took off, it was all downhill. I like Tina Fey, but there is no love lost on Jimmy Fallon or the host of other failures that have rolled on through there in the last 9 years. I still am at a loss for why he has his own late night gig when the funniest thing he ever did was lose it whenever he was in a sketch (yes I know Fallon was on during the end of the 90s, but he sucked then too).

SNL SUCKS!!! It hasn't been funny since the days of Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, Dana Carvey and Chris Farley

SNL is fracked. The only reason it's getting any buzz is because someone swore on the air... Not like the skit itself was funny or anything. I do watch 30 ROCK (Awesome show). But SNL? It will take more than a swear to get me to go back to that train wreak... hmmm.... Maybe Megan Fox naked... maybe.
BONERJAM
30 Rock is awesome! Its way better than Scrubs which is good show but not better than 30 Rock. With 30 Rock you dont have to sit through a stupid emo song being played while the characters reveal what they learned and why life is hard to end every episode. Sorry, but I dont want drama in my comedy. I think there are several reason not alot of people watch 30 Rock. I think people dont get it, dont like Tina Fey, dont like the liberal viewpoints/jokes or their just idiots.
Anyway, on the f-bomb subject, the only reason I relized it is that my fiancee made me rewind it to see if she did drop the bomb. It was pretty funny.

IBloodstormI - Chuck is still around, it's starting again in a few months yet, around the same time as 24. Chuck is a good show but it's starting to wear thin with me, it's the same trick over and over again, kinda like Burn Notice.
This clip isn't nearly as funny as the anchor man saying " keep f'n that chicken ", that is hands down the best Live comment I've ever heard.
SNL's problem is Loren Michaels, every sketch goes to him before it's considered for the show, he needs to change his ways.
N8R
Megan Fox actually had a chance to act and show off some comedy skills. Instead... she wore a few wigs.
Hrolf
30 rock is hilarious, but I have no idea what they were smoking when they decided to can Chuck, and dropped Scrubs. Not that Scrubs will be good for much longer, the changes will kill off whatever people liked about the show.
SNL HAS sucked for years though, I cant understand why that show is still on the air.
