PSP Firmware 6.0 Coming Soon, Not A Major Update

It’s been a long time coming, but Sony has finally revealed its plans for allowing PSP owners to digitally transfer their UMD games onto to their new PSP Go’s. And the plans are thus: there are no plans to support such a service.

Sony told Kotaku, “We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time.” Considering that Sony has been rather tight lipped about this whole thing for a while now, this latest news doesn’t come as that big of a shock. Although, I would imagine that quite a few PSP owners will have some strong words for Sony on this one.

In the hopes of quelling potential frustrations, Sony has also announced that it will be offering PSP owners in the UK looking to upgrade to a PSP Go three free digitally transferred games of their choice.

As Eurogamer reports, PSP owners can sign on to the PlayStation Network and will be eligible to receive a voucher via email that will be good for any three of the following games:

Like I said, this deal is currently only planned for the UK, but it seems unlikely that it won't land stateside in the near future.

What do you think of Sony abandoning its plans for a UMD transfer service? Will that influence your decision to purchase a PSP Go? Do three free games make up for not (eventually) being able to covert your current PSP library onto your PSP Go?

Source. Source.

Honestly, as a new PSP Go owner, this couldn't affect me less. I bought the psp go for me and my fiance to share so I could play Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy, and the Prince or Persia games and so he could play Metal Gear Solid and Jak and Daxter. Neither of us had owned a psp before hand, so we didn't have any games to transfer over.

But I can understand why psp owners with UMD games might be a tad miffed. No one is holding a gun to their head and making them purchase a psp go, but if they bought one on the beleifs that they would be able to transfer their games over, then that does suck. However, I think it's a bit extreme saying that the psp go is a waste of hard drive or that Sony is ripping off their customers like I've seend some people comment. I'd rather download a game and create a backup of it than purchase a physical game, just so I don't have to carry a bunch of games around with me.

Why does Sony insist on screwing its loyal followers? Most of the ps3s can't play ps 2 games....the ps3 slim can't either. And now this!!! What a joke! Will Microsoft please make a hand held! Red Rings suck... but at least they hooked you up with a couple new xboxs. And plus live is awsome... if you could have a xbox portable with live.... that would be the end of sony and nintendo!!!!!!!

    First!

And pretty ridiculous. I mean, most of those titles can already be digitally purchased on the PSN store.

I was looking forward to the PSP Go because I am tired of dealing with UMD's as a form of media. Then again, the PSP doesn't have that big of a library of "stellar" games, and pales in comparison to libraries like that of the DS.

And uh...where's Lumines on that list? That was the main reason I originally got a PSP. If I can't port the game that I originally bought the system for, without buying the rights to the "digital version," I probably won't even bother with upgrading.

Not to mention Street Fighter Alpha 3...

    Sony Executives Meeting.

Exec 1- "Well, we know we aren't going to let them transfer their old UMD's, since that would mean people could just Borrow a friends game and burn it to their PSP. So....what should we do???"

Exec 2- "I know, how about we tell them we are working on a solution, and we will have one ready by launch. But we need to be very vague, and not give any details. Then, a week before launch, after most people have already preordered it, we say that we aren't going to give them a solution anymore."

Exec 1 - "That's Brilliant!!! Everyone would assume that we will offer them a solution, and most will pre order the PSP Go! under the assumption that they will be able to transfer their games. A lot will also trade in their old PSP's at EB Games toward the Purchase of the new one, so when they find out that there isn't a plan anymore, it will be too late!! Your amazing. We will be RICH!!!! Let's go make out."

Looks like sony wants their shiny new system to fail everywhere else besides japan. I would've been willing to mail in my UMD's for a code on the download store. BUT NOOOOOOOOOO! Sony's too worried about piracy. Here's the thing though sony, the second you have a digital download store, piracy is instantly happening! Heck, you could've recycled the UMD's people mail in to save money on your other products. I don't think the term epic fail is fitting for this. ATOMIC FAIL!

Okay, honestly, I don't really see the big deal about this at all. This whole issue can be fixed this way. If you still own your old PSP 1000-3000 system, and the system still works, there's really no need to upgrade. The system works, it plays what you want it to play. If you've never owned a PSP in your life, don't know the first thing about it, and you want to spend a little extra on the PSP Go, then by all means, do so. It's not like Sony is trying to force all of you to re-buy your existing library again because they're still going to release all games both physically (meaning on UMD) and digitally. And, like they also mentioned, they're not discontinuing the PSP 3000 systems at all, so you get a choice. If you like owning physical hardware, then stick with the 1000-3000 system...problem solved. If you're the sort that likes digital downloaded content, then by all mean, spend that little extra on a PSP Go...problem solved.

This is just like the case with the DS Lite and the DSi. Last I remembered we got a lot of complaints about the DSi not being able to play Game Boy Advance games on it. Did that stop people from buying the system when it launched? NO! It didn't. People still bought the system and made the best out of it, and they did that by utilizing what the DSi was capable of and that was its digital download content. Also, did Nintendo ever discontinue the DS Lite? NO! They gave their games a choice, which is the case with the PSP and the PSP Go. That's what this is about. Choice for all gamers.

This system is NOT worth the money. Download service only and now this? I think i just heard a gun go off. Oh no. Sony just shot themselves in the foot. Honestly gents....there is nothing new about this system.

I guess this supports the idea sony had that the PSP Go is not meant to be a true successor and instead be more like a PSP 1.5.

I think PSP Go might be useful when it comes to music player or watching video....enough for 16GB. But when it comes to games, it can be dissapointing

As long as GTA: Chinatown Wars comes out on a UMD disk, I'm all good. I have the regular PSP na ddon't plan on upgrading to the PSP GO. Waste of money if you ask me when the current one is still good and still selling good.

I think Sony is just sticking it to those who've used the old PSPs for digital downloads already (and for free) and I'm starting to agree with it but the price is making me think otherwise.
