One of the more curious announcements during Sony's Tokyo Game Show 2009 press conference was PSP Room. Think of it as PlayStation Home for the PlayStation Portable. G4tv.com's Sterling McGarvey noted that it features cute avatars and:
"Blogs, photo albums, and social networking.
Chat, minigames, and real-time communication."
The service is being beta tested in Japan now. While I'm fairly certain it will come to America, the service just seems more inline with what Japanese gamers want. They love gathering in large numbers to play multiplayer games face-to-face. I can see them gathering for some digital networking too (it sounds weird, but trust me, they'd do it).
For American and European gamers...I'm not so sure. With services like Facebook and Twitter available on numerous mobile platforms, I don't see the need for PSP Room. Then again, this could totally appeal to consumers that bought that purple Hannah Montana PSP.
Would any of you be interested in this service?

I just signed-up for the Japanese Closed Beta! This looks awesome! It'll show that the PSP is powerful enough to run a MMO on it. If they ever make a real MMO for the PSP, that'd be awesome, but this satisfies me for now.

I would love if they added some sort of communication system. I say it would be nice for people, like me, who don't have those other mobile devices at the ready nor have Facebook and stuff to begin with.. Like I have a basic LG phone with not even a camera. And I spend more time surfing the web on my PSP than my computer anyway.

I think it sounds bad ass! I'd love to get something like home espially because I don't have a Wii, 360, or PS3. (sorry for the spelling mistake)

Although I'm for it, I'd much rather see a better form of the Friends system implemented on the PSP. Check out my friends lists, see who is online, send them messages/pictures, and such. Especially if it can use the same login information from the PS3.
Throw that all together with the PSP Room, and I'd be thrilled.

Sony should work with facebook for 3d avatar networking. Sony could do the 3d and facebook could do the networking. More and more older people are using it too so it's a good way to branch out. I think that could be interesting.

Interested? Yes.
Will it be a necessity? No.
It will definitely be nifty to not only see when my 360 and PS3 friends are online, but if my PSP friends are, as well. But I am afraid that this service will quickly turn into the crappy chat-thing that I could only get by fooling my PSP region.

With Skype and all the other stuff available, The Psp could totally be a Phone geared towards gaming, stuff like this just adds on to whats already there.
On a side note, I don't know how you guys go to Tokyo every year and actually come back, I'd probably just end up staying.

I think it's cool whether its "needed" or not. Competition is good for the market!

I'm still trying to convince myself buying my PSP was worth it much less more services for it. Although I'm sure this is their way of convincing me it WAS worth it but I just don't care anymore. They are going to have to do more than social-networking and etc. to get me to believe in the system again. I mean they have a few cool games, a year, but mine has mostly gone the way of the dodo...and the Wii.
Sorry, I had to throw a Wii joke in there.
