Sessler's Soapbox: Does ODST Have the Halo Effect?

I know you're all busy playing Firefight right now, but it's that time of week to sit down and take a minute to listen to the pearls of wisdom spit by The Sess. Adam sits down to discuss Halo 3: ODST and its strangely muted presence in this year's list of big game releases. Does ODST not need a bit marketing push because it's a part of the Halo franchise that always sells well? Or is there another reason? Find out what Sessler thinks, and tell us your thoughts in the comments section.

I think Adam 's comment on the Red Hot Chili Peppers makes sense in some ways. I think we all have been their before, where we have liked something and it lost it's appeal when new people suddenly like it. It's perfectly understandable to think that some people only started like something [music, games, movies] just simply because it's the newest trend or the next big thing and let's face it, that is not far off from the truth sometimes. Perfect example is Twiiter, if Twitter never became big as it is today, most people would have never given it a second look. Now it's become this cultural phenomenon, but how many people on Twitter actually understand it for what it is and not what the media says it is. It's just harder to appreciate something, when so many other people who don't appreciate it, use it. That applies to pretty much everything and I think that was Adam's belief when he made that comment. He believed that those girls did not appreciate the music for what it was, but for what it has become. I do admit that he made the mistake in assuming that the girls did not appreciate the music for what it was, but I can't fault him for that. Because we have all been there before and it's likely we will make the same mistake again.

OK....! first I think that Wii sports game case that got kicked by Mr. Sessler, should have been the Halo ODST. Anyways, a 5/5 is really a bad rating for this game.... its not a bad game but definitely not deserving a 5. Seeing how the entire site has been littered with Halo for the past few weeks now, I guess it was inevitable a 5 was on the cards despite it been a low quality game with poor graphics.
A 3.5 would have been better.

So with that said... its a pity almost 2mil xbot gamers were deceived by this so called "REVIEW" and are now regretting it. $65 bucks? Don't worth it. Maybe$35-40

Killzone 2 got smothered by Halo ODST sales. Plain and simple, Halo is much more established than Killzone 2. Here today gone tomorrow poor excuse for exclusives, they shoot many but hit none.

I think when a lot of critics rate video games it kind of draws a crowd.Like when you go to Metacritic,Gamerankings, they combine rating scores from different websites and magazines and total the scores of every site to equal a number of scores. When a person buys a game they may not feel as strongly towards the game like critics do.For instance the movie"Taken"was not approved by critics but the average fan either rates it as 4/5 or 5/5,but that's just their opinion. So gamers when some video game website or magazine write this game is a 5/5,10/10,A+,100/100 make your own judgements according to you, and not based on critics reviews. That's my Halo effect.

I think Killzone must be a bad word for halo lovers whove never even played the game. its like saying Saytan in church.

Once again I agree with Adam and he brings up a lot of good points. I think there are number of things that make it so hard to look at a game objectively. If you've read the previews, reviews and impressions, I think it some time's difficult for you to form your own opinion of a game without being influenced by others opinions. Other things that can cause you not to look at a game objectively is the hype surrounding the game and if it's well-known franchise. Just because it's a Halo, Call of Duty or God of War [or any other big IP], you should not assume the game is good on the basis of name only. So when you get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, God of War III or New Super Mario Bros Wii, I encourage you to look at a game for what it is and not what it's from.

I don't even know where to begin. There were so many flaws in Adam's logic, it's uncanny.

"You need a well articulated opinion for not liking a game."
    vs
    "Is it fun to play?"

Maybe... people are answering the latter question as simply as it's asked.

"No single game has done more to thrust games into the main stream."

Only in a world where Super Mario doesn't exist.

"These games tend to get negative criticism because their so big."

Maybe the gamers themselves disagree with the press. I never liked the setting of Halo games. It's a world I don't care to visit and YES I respect the opinions of others even when they don't respect mine... as Adam seemed to exemplify.

"Red Hot Chili Peppers/ girls holding lighters."

Rather than find the common interests with people he normally wouldn't socialize with, HE HIMSELF would rather find the negative aspects in the same rant as condemning people for doing exactly that.

See, Adam has his own show and Soapbox to say as much as he wants when we have 5000 characters or less to express ours. Maybe, just maybe, something gets lost in translation there. Rest assured that he's not going to sit down and talk to anyone of us about our opinions. He's gonna gather WHAT HE WANTS to gather from them and use that. If he ever did sit down with any of us, I believe he would interrupt our opinions the way I've seen him do to other writers I respect on the Feedback.

Also, I'll bet when sorting through the comments and he sees a "wall of text" (Like this one) he skips right past it. Meaning, he's won't pay attention to your "well articulated opinion" any way. I call shenanigans.

Sessler really strayed off topic and made it almost impossible to figure out his point. I think the "Real" Halo effect is that it has the name Halo, which for some reason makes people want to buy it. All Halos have been sub-par FPS. ODST is no different. Yet for some reason people want to play them and it will sell.

Sess I think you and your buddy Sark or Stark or whatever his name is have the Halo effect in reverse. The reality is Halo gets better reviews than it deserves because it has a name. The truth is Halo games are average at best. Always have been. They've never done anything revolutionary or really fun. I remember when they tried to package and sell duel weilding in Halo 2 like it was the first time ever it had been done in an FPS.

Some people just don't have this ability to look at games for what they are. For example, the Kingdom Hearts games are all absolute crap. Yet people love them and they are given unjustly highscores. Take the Halo characters and names off of ODST and no one would care. Take the Disney and Square characters out of Kingdom Hearts and it's just a really really bad action RPG.

Lets compare this to something like BlazBlue which is game the completely is sucessful and a great games based on it's own marits. Strip the character sprites, change the story, and remove all of the fandom and it's still one of the most solid 2D fighters to come out in years.

ODST is honestly (puts up flame shield) my favorite entry into the Halo saga. It brings all the goodness and happy I get from playing Halo 1-3 and adds a level of strategy and depth that was missing in the previous games.

For instance in Halo 3 I would run up to Wraith tanks jump and frag them, in ODST I can't do that as easily I have to plan a way to get behind the tank and then bust it open. And the story is easily the most appealing and interesting of them all.

Now I own all three systems and I'm a huge fan of Killzone, CoD4 (Plan to pick up Modern Warfare 2 day 1) etc. But people saying that a game is bad just because it is Halo feels somewhat arrogant.

Also for a game originally made to be a small not fully fledged game itself, ODST does a really good job.

Can people just review a game with out going to another review for a different game. I hate how everyone brings up COD or KZ when you should just be reviewing the game at hand. The game is far better then Halo 3 in the sense of story, which I give a 10 out of 10. Firefight, Horde, Nazi Zombies... it's the same thing. There are differences to be sure but just like most religions at their core, it's the same thing with different packaging and people. It's a fun mode but it should have matchmaking. The game is good don't just hate on it because you play something else. I don't play Gears or CoD, their good games just not my cup of tea, but I still don't shoot them down relentlessly, breathe Halo haters, breathe.

Marketing dropped the ball. If this was named Halo 4, or anything but Halo 3 it would be doing much better. The ODST isn't enough to tell the average non-hardcore consumer that this is an all new game and not just an add-on or re-vamp. Even MY first impression was "I already have Halo 3".

People who rely on metacritic to make their arguments for them are usually the same people who tend to think that people who bring up sales numbers to win an argument for them fail. Yet how is the verdict of paid critics (who may or may not have paychecks coming from advertising dollars and thus have their lively hoods tied up in the success of a game), somehow more relevant than the opinion of the marketplace? It's an absurd argument based usually in an absurd fanboy loyalty, and should thus be ignored out of hand.

    @ SeanGE

You're just now finding out that gaming on a PC is easier than a console? Point/click with a mouse is about as easy as it gets in a shooter.

This game lost to Killzone 2. Halo 3: ODST only got an 85% average while Killzone 2 got a 91% average. Game over.
