Goldeneye For Wii, XBLA Looking Unlikely

Everyone loved Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64, so the idea of it coming to a current-gen console is very, very popular. Although Nintendo was in talks with Microsoft, and it almost seemed likely to happen, Sadly, it seems as if the deal has fallen through.

Recently, Rare, the creator of Goldeneye, addressed the issue in its newsletter. A reader asked about talks between Rare and Nintendo/Microsoft, and how close they all were to reaching an agreement to include the game on their systems. Below is the response:

"That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we’re long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere… probably.”

That is not encouraging at all... but maybe it's just as well. Goldeneye was fantastic for its time, but I have a feeling its multiplayer would seem very weak ported to the 360. That's the sad fate of innovative games: Often other games refine and improve their core mechanics and create something better, so younger generation can't even understand what the hype was about to begin with. But trust me: If you played Goldeneye the first time around, you know you love it.

Interestingly enough, Goldeneye was one of the best movie based games ever made. In a time when movie games automatically suck Goldeneye was absolutely outstanding.

i love this game and me and my friends still get together every week at college to play GoldenEye, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 2, and we played Diddy Kong Racing once. but we stick to some of the best N64 classics for that night.

i think the idea of GoldenEye on xbla is better in idea than in reality. like was stated, "If you played Goldeneye the first time around, you know you love it." stick with keeping this on N64 so you really understand why this was such a revolutionary FPS and why it is so beloved.

Of all the quasi-soul-crushing statements I have ever heard, that one had to be my favorite.

Sure I'd like Goldeneye too, but I've learned never to wait for Nintendo to do anything. And they are just slowing MS down.

    So forget 'em!!

I'd rather play the GoldenEye, remastered with updated graphics than Perfect Dark any day.

You could always download the rom and use a 360 controller to play it.

This game was AWESOME. I remember one day I had worked myself into a frenzy trying to beat the time clock on the facility level. I finally did do it, then I realized I had missed the Super Bowl. Yup, THAT addicting.

They're putting Perfect Dark on XBLA, why not Goldeneye which I'm sure much more people would prefer. I am going to buy Perfect Dark when it's released on the XBLA, and I would definitely buy Goldeneye if it was on XBLA. Goldeneye was such an incredible game and so far ahead of it's time. Goldeneye is what got me to buy a N64.

Aside from nostalgic reasons, why would anyone in their right mind devote more than a couple play-throughs to this game? I mean, I can't imagine too many people playing this thing when shooters have hyper-evolved in the last 15 years. This is THE game that introduced many to the genre, but purchasing this game would be the equivalent of re buying Pole Position because I loved it when I was 5 years old.

It doesn't matter about not getting Goldneye, becuase Perfect Dark is comint to XBLA.

Say SJ! When not cover something that that never gets covered in the gaming news. Find out if Rockstar will ever do a revamp of Body Harvest. That game rawked! Also find out if Blaster Master will come to the Wii via VC or even an Next-gen remake for the other consoles.

Now THAT would be some news!

    ahhhh
the rumble pack and the jumbo pack, great memories.
I still play this once in a while with friends, when i am not on the 360.
Even after 12 years Golden Eye is still the best game ever created from a movie. Even though Golden Eye was not one of the best movies in the James Bond series. yeaaa not a great
It sucks that it is not coming on the 360. Its perfect for Live. Multiplayer has advanced a lot since Golden Eye they probably could of added some more game modes.

I loved killing with the throwing knives. I agree that the newer generation of gamers wont appreciate games like Goldeneye. Kinda like how alot of those idiots can't appreciate a game like Contra.

I attribute my lackluster grades in college to this game!! I missed many a class playing 4-player matches at my fraternity house. Mario Kart 64 was another culprit!
