When LucasArts revealed that it was partnering with BioWare for a Star Wars MMO, millions of people (including Rodians, Mon Calamari, and Twi'leks) paid attention. Star Wars: The Old Republic promises to be like no other MMO to date. At PAX 2009, producer Jake Neri revealed how the game's story and combat will distinguish it from the pack.
"What we're really trying to do with The Old Republic is introduce the idea of story into an MMO. The genre has a ton of good games -- games that focus on combat and exploration and progression, but when we came together with BioWare to make this game, we wanted to focus on story and what that means in an MMO.
When we looked at the combat and we started out, the goal was to make it heroic and cinematic. One thing that's interesting -- I don't know if everybody knows -- is that everything that we've shown is up to level eight. At level eight, most classes you see are pretty impressive. We've got cool bounty hunter abilities that people look at and say, 'Wow, I can't wait to do that!' Our Sith warrior flipping through the air and rocking people to the skull -- people want to do that, right? It's cool. It's unique. It's exciting. It's heroic. From the beginning of the game, we're trying to deliver that experience."

Sorry to disappoint, but here's the bad news.
SWTOR is nothing more than (Muppet Show voice)....WOW.....IN.....SPaaA Aaaaaace.
It's a continuation of Dallas Dickinson tried to do with SWG, and that's to capture the WoW'esque interface that so many other video games have copied shamelessly, and nothing more. (speaking of game mechanics). Global cooldowns still exist in the game. 4 button bars, minimap. Global map. Inventory, bank, auction house. flight paths, planet hops, instances, raids...really nothing new or revolutionary.
The game is VERY linear...A-B-C...there's no skipping around from place to place..wherever you are in the story quests and the "world" quests defines where on the map you are and on what planet.
Storyline quests are not level limited, so you could have a high level player run you through all your storyline content.
Space combat....well...sucks rocks. That's one thing SWG had exactly right. Space combat in that game was nothing short of amazing.
Items are: grey, white, green, blue, purple, with some orange thrown in there (orange items are upgrade-able thoughout the game)
Most lootable and purchasable lightsabers only have one customization slot at present. The ones that do have the full ability to be customized are either low level and aren't useful later, or they've not been revealed, although I've looted some items that are parts for future light sabers (so it would seem....for example, epic focusing lens)
The Good News:
It doesn't totally suck.
This game will never be a WoW killer, but it can compete. It's well done, well put together, and casual friendly. (Hardcore gamers may want to give this a pass...I don't know, haven't gotten into raiding content yet.)...that being said....most elite mobs are solo-able (at 2 levels below mob level). You can severely undrelevel your quest area. (for example if an area is rated lvl 25, you can do it at 22-23 without much trouble...and I think this should go in "bad news" as well)
The thing that really makes this game good and will keep me over WoW, the voice acting and cut scenes are interesting and enjoyable.
on a scale of 1-10, I'd give it an 8.

Here's hoping to put an end to the cooldown-based, "whack-a-mole" hotkeys MMO combat system.

hmmm, a story in an MMO?? they think theyre the first to do this? Trying playing Guild Wars and all the expansions, as far as im concerned those all have a story, and good ones at that.

i am eagerly awaiting this, looks great..sounds great..just trying to learn jedi patience to wait for this game
rayken15
Definately can't wait for this one. Here's to hoping it's good.

i'm a sucker for anything with the Star Wars label (other than Cartoon Network Star Wars), just not sure i'm quite sold on the cartoonish look
Worzeth
I wasn't confused...

Video should be fixed now. Sorry for the confusion.

Phew... I was worried I was the only one who saw the "DO NOT USE, DELTE", sign. I was hoping to see that interview too :P
And I am looking forward to this game. I've been a star wars fan for a damn long time.
And quick response to a comment: The dialogue only sucked in the prequel trilogy. And that was more delivery than it was what was being said (with some exceptions *cough*anakin and padme*cough*).
Other than that, I played Star Wars Galaxies, found it fun but a little disappointing. I am looking forward to this, and I agree with you whole-heartedly Xwing. I can only hope you're right...

Personally I think they have a golden bullet and it is aimed for WoW

Umm... As a long time fan of Star Wars, whats the worst aspect of the whole franchise? THE DIALOGUE!!! And they are going to build a huge MMO on it? Give me a break, I just want to kill stuff...
scorcher117
Heh I love the "DO NOT USE, DELETE" sign
but back to the topic in terms of new gameplay I would want to see it take a direction AWAY from time-based repetition attacks prevalent in MMOs...I mean they seem like they are taking that direction and I hope they make the experience more, real-time i guess
