Platinum Games Addresses Bayonetta's PlayStation 3 Performance Issues

The first reports about the PlayStation 3 version of Bayonetta were not kind. Apparently, the PlayStation 3 version suffers from a number of frame rate hiccups. Platinum Games CEO and president Tatsuya Minami noticed this discussion online and decided to address player concerns directly through the Platinum Games blog. As it turns out, Platinum Games didn't even develop the PlayStation 3 version, it was ported by Sega.

"With Bayonetta," he said, "we created the Xbox 360 version of the game first, and then handed off all the data and other assets to SEGA so they could begin the process of porting Bayonetta to the PS3, giving them advice regarding the porting process along the way and overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be. The goal was to release the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions to gamers day and date, and even though there have been trials and tribulations along the way, we are incredibly pleased to be able to present two playable versions of the game on the Tokyo Game Show floor."

Minami admitted there are "differences" and "peculiarities" associated with developing on each platform, which translates into tangible variations in the finished product.

"All involved endeavored to exploit the specific traits of each console to create an enjoyable experience," he said. "We feel the best way to evaluate this is by actually playing the game for yourself and coming to your own conclusions."

The explanation from the leader of Platinum Games is slightly confusing. Minami's admission that there will be differences between the versions indicates what we've seen of Bayonetta on PlayStation 3 could translate to the version that lands on store shelves. Why Platinum Games chose to pass off development to Sega is unclear. Maybe I can ask at Tokyo Game show.

    Let's not let this delve into some stupid fanboy war. this isn't about which system is better, (both have their strengths and weaknesses), it's about giving a quality product to your consumers. This is the part that bothers me more though. The PS3 has a 3-1 lead in Japan and as this game is being developed by the Devil May Cry creator wouldn't it be in their financial best interest to MAKE SURE the game works on both systems. It was gonna sell way more on PS3 than 360 in Japan so why be lazy about the PS3 part?

    how pathetic is it that after 3 years some people still dont get that porting is a horrible idea and you should make two versions of the game not one ported to the other

    Why the heck are so many people ticked about the 360 get royal treatment for this ridiculous looking game.When us PS3 owners have great exclusives coming this fall.We've got Heavy Rain,a new Ratchet and Clank,Uncharted 2,Demon's Soul and GT5.Not only that but were getting a royal treatment verison of FFXIII.So again why should anybody care about the 360 getting good development for a title that will probably score 2/5 when its reviewed here.

    i agree with tmidiman i feel that maybe they shouldn't release at the same time just for the sake of releasing it. hopefully they will take their time as long as both versions are at their best i don't mind waiting

    A another game delayed due to porting over a PS3 version. Well it's not like this problem went away just becasue a slim version came out.

    Whatever. It looks like a fun game to me and I look forward to trying it out once it's done. Too bad I have to wait for it to be released. Thanks sony!

    LOL @ XBOX360 being "inferioir". There have been many iterations of the hardware and I beleive raw power wise, the 360 is more powerful, but not as advanced (hence the development issues with the PS3). Also, the 360 team helps the developers a lot more than the PS3 side.

    This is why I have both systems, there will be games that do better on one system vs the other given the fact that 1 was released a whole year earlier than the other! Just like DMC4 plays a bit better on the PS3, if not just for the controller is better suited for that gameplay vs the xbox 360's layout.

    And also, with some of these small developers, it really isn't worth it for them to have a whole team dedicated to do the PS3 when you can outsource it to an established company for less. You kids need to learn a bit about running a business before commenting on such things.

    @ProjektX13 (yeah again)

    So let me get this straight we (360 fanboys) are so happy teasing ps3 owners and fanboys. but really we are doing this because we have a failure rate about 50%? games that get scratch? that copy other ideas from other games? that pay lots of money for exclusive DLC that comes with bugs noobish mods, $50 for online, and hardware issues? so much for jumping in.

    oh yeah, its "its only does everything" now. unless your're living in the past when the ps3 was $600 and you still had your first 360 instead your 6th...

    I think it's all BS. I'm so tired of hearing the game was "ported" from the Xbox 360 version. Why would you develope a game on inferior harware in the first place. It's like developing a game for a Super Nintendo and direct porting it to fit a PS2 and expecting it to look good. I agree with PRD. Devs need to stop whining, get there hands out of Microsoft's pockets, and start making better games for the PS3.

    @Pr0jectX13

    what are you talking about, they made a 360 version of the game, but never a ps3 version, that means its not in a blu-ray format, its in your 360 low rated DVD format.

    Bayonetta just looks like Devil May Cry updated some. who cares if an old school game can't port over properly, PS3 owners will be busy playing games developed for the system that can't possibly be ported to the 360 due to technical or bluray data issues. As far as I'm concerned Bayonetta is an Xbox exclusive.

    If you honestly believe the grabage you just spoke, watch this video.

    Anybody who says PS3 has no games, or 360 has better games than their PS3 counterparts, I suggest you watch this video also.

    The game looks like crap. NOT just on the PS3.

    I do not own a PS3, and wont get one due to money problems right now, but this kind of crap makes me not want to own one. Its not Sony's fault, its the developers who decide to not take the extra effort.

    If you make a decision to port a game to multiple systems, and include the PS3, maybe you should dedicate the resources to ensure the game comes out the way it should.

    If I were the CEO of Platinum Games, I think I would see what legal action I could take.

    If I were a PS3 owner who bought this game, I would see what sort of class action lawsuit I could take against Sega.

    Oh man. What I love about the PS3 is that it showed how much these so-called developers are unprofessional, lazy and incompetent.

    This short-sighted get-rich quick off crappy games mentality is not working anymore. Gamers are mature and tech savvy.

    Every time I hear about Sega anymore it's always them failing to meet expectations or screwing something up completely. But I wasn't that interested in this one as it is, so there won't be any disappointment on my end if it sucks.

    So let me get this straight we (360 owners) get top quality and first class treatment from developers and you (Ps3 owners) get ports? games that have trouble installing? games that are broken because of firmware updates? and DLC that comes about 10 months to a year late? games with frame rate, technical, and glitch issues? so much for playing beyond.
