EA Interested In Making New SSX Game, Just Not Now

When it comes to sheer thrills and outrageously satisfying mountaintop madness, it’s hard to top Electronic Arts’ snowboarding franchise SSX. I can’t tell you how much time I sunk into SSX Tricky, precisely because the game was fun as hell and had great presentation. Now, even though the series did make the jump to the next-gen back in 2007 with the Nintendo Wii installment, SSX Blur, it has yet to appear on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. And unfortunately, it looks like it could be a while before it does too.

When Gamesindustry.biz spoke with EA Montreal general manager Alain Tascan about revisiting the series again, Tascan said:

“It's a little bit early to talk about it, but I feel... I know internally it is a franchise that people love because it was successful and good, and it reminds me of when we were young, and I feel if the market is there and is ready for a new one then we'll consider it.”

Now, while fans would probably appreciate a next-gen SSX game that operated using a standard controller, I have a feeling that EA Montreal might be planning to build the next SSX title around Microsoft’s motion-control technology Project Natal. Obviously, this is just a hunch, but it would help explain Tascan’s “when the market is ready for it” comment, and the game's already received one motion-controlled iteration. Why not another? Either way though, it looks like SSX fans have a cold, cold wait ahead of them.

What did you think of SSX Blur? Would you prefer a more traditional SSX game, or would you like to see a Natal-ized version?

I would LOVE to see a new SSX game.!
I'm just hoping it's doesn't turn out like TOUR, that game, man it
sucked, the characters' personalities were just way out of line, and gameplay, ehh...
Blur's okay to me, but should have been better considering it was a SSX game.

SSX Tricky...awsome, SSX 3...amazing, but then it kinda went downhill with On Tour, and SSX Blur?...hated it. SSX Blur was the low point in the SSX franchise. I would personally like to see a traditional SSX game with no Wiimotes, or Project Natal. Release it on 360/PS3, stick with a controller, and keep it similar to Tricky and 3, and you have a recipe for a great game.

"SSX Tricky" was a lot of fun and "SSX 3: Out of Bounds" was near perfect!

Love the new way you made logging in easier!

I absolutely loved Tricky. It's why I bought a gamecube. I would love some sweet new high def snowboarding graphics. But if you make it motion control, please leave in option for normal controls. Thanks!

Blur wasn't bad, but 3 Tricky and SSX were pure classics. For the love of The Mog, I hope they release a true, full-fledged sequel to the series that does NOT involve motion control. They already did motion controls with Blur. Done. Give us a true game that will give the Skate series a run for its money. (Skate can rule the quasi-realistism of sideways sports, while SSX can take the over-the-top, arcade daredevil mountain, sideways sliding.)

Dear God, I miss the SSX series.

ssx was great, tricky was awsome, the thrid one was great, I do agree the forth was a let down. and blur for the wii was great fun but some of the stars were impossiable to get so you couldn't get a 100% on the game.

As much as I would love a new SSX (it was the primary reason I bought the PS2 on release) can we all just agree to ignore Natal? Maybe then it will go away. Sorry, I like using standard controllers. I don't like flailing around the room like an idiot and getting carpal tunnel in the process.

I remember spending entire weekends playing the ssx games. The first two were the best, and I like the idea in the third where it was one big mountain, but it was lacking the star power from tricky. Plus the main song from the start screen in the first game just got ya goin and ready to shred some slopes. I hope they make a new edition with these traits, and sooner rather than later, but thats just a troll talkin

Dude! I remember playing that game on the PS2. It was so much fun! I remember the freestyle where there was plenty of jumps, rails, halfpipes, etc. My brother and I would always battle for the highest scores.

I would like a new SSX. SSX Tricky was a blast and my friend and I had a serious battle for top score.

I wonder what kind of ridiculous dlc ea would come up with for a new ssx, they will probably charge you extra just to play multiplayer like burnout paradise

I remember playing this game when I was around 12 yrs old. lol only snowboard games I played was SSX for the PS2 and Snowboard kids 1 and 2 on N64. Both EA and Nintendo need to bring these franchise back!
