Star Wars: Galaxies Servers

Bad times for Star Wars Galaxies. Sony Online Entertainment  has announced that 12 of the game's servers will be shutdown on October 15th, 2009, at 5PM PDT. That's a little less than half of all SWG servers: Only 13 will be remaining.

The creation of new characters on the soon-dead servers is now disabled, and characters who play there will have a choice of other servers to populate. The transfers are free-of-charge until the 15th. After that, it'll be a hassle and cost you $50, so don't miss your chance.

The dying servers are:

  • Corbantis
  • Europe-Infinity
  • Intrepid
  • Kauri
  • Kettemoor
  • Lowca
  • Naritus
  • Scylla
  • Tarquinas
  • Tempest
  • Valcyn
  • Wanderhome

Sony's official explanation for the server-closure is a masterpiece of corporate spin:

"The Free Character Transfer Service launched earlier this year with the intention of allowing players to transfer to servers with more active communities, creating a more vibrant and memorable Star Wars Galaxies gaming experience. The Free Character Transfer Service was a phenomenal success, leaving the less active servers in an undesirable position. In order to help streamline the current and new user experience, we have made the decision to close the less active servers and focus on the thriving Star Wars Galaxies servers."

Yeah, sure, Sony; you're shutting down half of your MMO's servers because of the "phenomenal success" of free character transfers. That's like touting the truck rental figures of U-Haul as proof that your town's economy isn't dying.

While I'm sure that consolidating the players will make SWG better for awhile, it seems to me that the writing is on the wall... and times are going to get really tough for Galaxies when Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO launches!

What do you think? Did you give Galaxies a shot? How long do you think the game has left?

SWG was doomed the day the NGE hit, hope that teaches SOE not to ignore the game community again. I did play SWG before the NGE hit and left shortly after. I played on Intrepid and i am sadden to see it it go. On a happier note I am looking forward to SW: The Old Republic, Sith Warrior here i come:)

Star Wars Galaxies is not a good game. I never played it before it was "ruined" but the times i did play it, the controls were strange and it just wasn't fun.

I am a huge StarWars Fan as some of you may know & gamer, But I myself sadly have not had the chance to try out galaxies. That how ever does not mean that I will not try it soon, " I've really have been meaning too" and I do beleave that given the chance to survive it would just like so many other StarWars games. Take BattlFront 2 is still played and enjoyed online but a great many people. To let one game die to make room for another should not happen , and I don't beleave will happen with any StarWars game, ever .
