The shenanigans that have sprung up as a result of a bunch of misguided gamers boycotting Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2 have just been ridiculous. I thought last week’s story about a pair of boycotters being given a tour of Valve’s studios was brilliant, but this latest story might be even better.
As Joystiq reported last week, a gamer in Australia named Joe W-A, who has conversed with Valve head Gabe Newell consistently for a while now, jokingly suggested that Newell fly to Australia to check out his Left 4 Dead campaign. Newell joked back, saying that if Joe sprung for a ticket for him and Valve project manager Erik Johnson, they would be there.
Well, thanks to a blog that he set up to help raise funds, Joe has managed to secure over $3,000 from generous donators, indicating that this thing might happen after all. Joe contacted Newell to inform him of this news, to which Newell and Johnson responded:
“The English language lacks the words to express the level of excitement Erik and I feel that you and your friends have pulled this off. Give us some time to organize our affairs, as we are trying to ship a product, and then we’ll let you know the time and date of our arrival.”
It would be interesting to know if there were any L4D2 boycotters on that donations list. It doesn't seem logical that someone could approve of handing over cash to help some guy meet two Valve developers yet disapprove of spending money on a game that will most likely deliver an experience equal to or greater than that of the one they claim to adore so much. Or maybe I'm just missing something.
Anyone here donate money to this guy’s cause?
