Cryptic's Star Trek Online is bound to suck the life from Trekkers the world over when it launches for PC next year. The subject matter is perfect for an MMO, and the Trek fanbase is as loyal as any on earth. So you can imagine the hype when the game was unveiled at PAX this year. G4 was there, speaking to executive producer Craig Zinkievich.
According to Zinkievich, the goal of the game is to make you feel like you're in the TV shows or the movies. To do that, everyone is given his or her own Starship, either Klingon or Federation.
"It's awesome flying around space with five, ten or 15 ships as a fleet," Zinkievich told us. "It's paced, it's strategic.... we really wanted to get that strategic feel in the game. It's about positioning, taking down your enemy's shields, getting right behind them and unloading with a photon torpedo and taking them out.."

Damn, is Star trek going to get me to play my very first MMO? Star Trek Online looks very interesting and very tempting. I'm no Star Trek geek (Treker...Trekie...?) but I do like the franchise. If this captures the feel of the shows as much as Zinkievich's enthusiam seems to indicate this might not be a game to miss.

Man, if there wasn't a monthly fee I would get this. That is the one thing that makes me turn away from MMO's.

You are not only the captain but you are also responsible for developing("leveling up" is a VERY loose term)your bridge crew which can also be playable instead of the 'Captain".It's not like SWG where everyone became a Jedi before too long(which among other things killed the game and which is what worries me about Old Republic).I saw both demonstrated at a trade show last month and while comparing them really is like comparing apples and bananas(that's how different they are), imo STO looks more fun and imaginative(definitely more polished so far).

Very disappointed that they're going w/ the "everyone's a captain, everyone has a ship" model. I would have much rather have them make us move up the ranks, from a lowly redshirt or someone who scrubs the deck to a captain, head engineer, or whatever your career path is in-game. Nearly every Trek game ever made already goes by the "You are captain, fly around, blow stuff up" model that ST Online is going with. The only difference is now you're gaining XP and doing it multiplayer.
I'll still try the game out but it's not what I was hoping for at all in an ST MMO.

So it's EVE Online only with a Star Trek theme? Cool I'll download it and play it for a few weeks.

Everyone is a captain? Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

This game looks to be very solo friendly, which is good for me because I'm a loner! You get to customize your bridge officers as well as your own, and everything about your ship (with slight restrictions, a galaxy class ship must still have the basic form of a galaxy class ship). This and The Old Republic coming out, ksdfjkajiejfkasjfka Goo!dafjkljakdj f *MMO COMA*

This game is going to be awesome. Its good to see the Prime Universe alive and kicking. Though I do love the Abramsverse too....

I'm excited to see how they get this to work and integrate all the series and movies. I'm not a ST canon purist, but I do really enjoy all forms of Star Trek. It looks good and like it'll allow people to do their "ST thang". You finally get to be a captain.
But I do have to admit, I was already to pre-order this bad boy up until E3 when Bioware and Lucasarts showed off Old Republic. Now, I'm a SW fanboy first and foremost so I'm going to get that no matter what, but I will definitely check out ST Online too. There's room in the universe for both Star Wars and Star Trek.
