Last week I posted a video of Kurt Cobain's avatar rocking out in Guitar Hero 5. It's pretty disturbing to fans to see the troubled lead singer of Nirvana busting out Flava Flav rhymes or singing Stevie Wonder tunes. But it's apparently not just fans who are upset. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, isn't happy either.
"For the record this Guitar Hero sh*t is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction," Love posted on her Twitter feed.
She also tweeted:
WE are going to sue the sh*t out of ACtivision we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises.
And:
i vomited when i saw the avatar got ill cried
And:
FOR THE RECORD I DID NOT APPROVE KURTS AVATAR FOR GUYITARHERO5. i think Kurt would despise this game alone let alone this avatar.
So there you have it: Love is very angry, so angry, it seems that her Twitter feed is full of disjointed and confusing rants.

I'd say Kurt would like it if he gave it a chance. He just wouldn't because he was a self-loathing neurotic rock star who would block Dave Grohls calls when he calls to say 'dude this game is awesome'. You all know it. The exposure alone would sicken him.

Even if Cobain would care, Courtney would then have him killed, then sell the rights and complain after. It's a fairly predictable cycle.

Courtney Love is pathetic. She is tired of living in Kurt's shadow. She never did too well with that crap she called music. Now she is taking it out on everyone else. Kurt would have been honored to see himself in something like this. He was happy when Weird Al made a parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." If his moron of a widow can't find a way to get her heroin, that's nobody's problem but her own. Activision may have handled it the wrong way, but Courtney Love's reasoning behind her lawsuit is much worse. I hope Kurt haunts her and tells her what a sorry person she is. He would want his music to be heard by whoever wants to hear it or he would have never recorded an album in the first place. Rest in peace, Kurt. Go to Hell, Courtney.

its not about "jimi hendrix was in it!" or "johnny cash is better than kurt, so whats the big deal?"
honestly, i dont like nirvana. but ive got to admit, if activision is in breach of copyright, or did not obtain the proper rights needed to use his likeness, then they are in serious freaking trouble.
if it is found that his "avatar" is in defamation of his character, which, simply being in a commercial video game could suffice, then activision could be held accountable for misrepresentation. they could be in a a really bad spot because of this.
this is actually QUITE serious. and could be one of the first legitimate cases of video games being viewed as a medium through which legal action could be taken for defamation and misrepresentation. all this talk about "he sucks, get over it" or "she sucks, she should get over it" or whatever just...
this could potentially be REALLY BAD for activision, and they could be in a position to lose TONS of money over it. and as it stands, they appear to be in the wrong...

Courtney probably DID agree to Kurt's image being used. She was so high on coke and meth that she doesn't remember. Now she wants to sue for more drug money.

in my honest opinion johnny cash was 20 million times the musician that kurt cobain ever was. as was jimi hendrix even though when he was in world tour he wasnt a "playable" character like the latter.
i highly extremely over-undoubtedly think that activition would use mr cobain's likeliness in a game without miss love's permission. they aren't stupid. no other company constantly urges me to keep buying their games >.<</safety_wrapper&g t;

How the hell is this offensive? Really, how? I think its probably every musicians dream to be featured in a video game. If you think about it, GH is more like the Rolling Stone of this era. Everyone wanted to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone (there was even a song about it, called....you guessed it "Cover of the Rolling Stone". She needs to get a grip on herself. Its just like the whole Michael Jackson thing....he is dead....get over it.

Anyone who thinks that Kurt would be OK with this obviously doesn't really know anything about him. He was a true artist and never wanted anything to do with fame, fortune, or mainstream culture. In fact, the fame he attained ended up crushing him and was one of the main reasons he killed himself (see his suicide note if you don't believe me). So, he certainly would've absolutely HATED the idea of becoming an avatar in a video game, especially in the context of performing other (mainstream) people's music.
However, with that said, Courtney shouldn't be pretending that she is defending his legacy by suing Activision... She is just being greedy and is the one who whored out his legacy in the first place (which he also certainly wouldn't have been too happy about either, to say the least). Her threatening to sue Activision after selling them the rights is like sticking your arm in a lion's cage and then getting upset at the lion for tearing it off. WTF did you expect?
Just for the record, I don't have a problem with this game or Activision. They did what they thought was best for the game. Courtney is the one to blame...

Do you people know Kurt Cobain personally? No? Didnt think so. So why are you making such a big deal about it? Its a game. Its for our enjoyment. If you dont like it then dont play it, its that simple. For Activision to use his likeness they had to have permission from somewhere, and it didnt have to be from Courtney. So someone, somewhere gave their consent. I agree that he wasnt the greatest and that they could have used better celebs, but really its not that big a deal. All the commotion you guys are causing wont do a thing.

I'm confused between the "breach of contract" part and the "I did not give permission" part. Unless of course she sold the estate and therefore has no claim OR it's not Activision she can sue.

That's just you not knowing the story of Kurt Cobain talking. The man (unsuccessfully) tried to tank his career several times because he hated being a pop god. As awesome as it may seem, some people don't like the thought of not being able to go buy your own groceries or take their kid to the park... Kurt was one of them.
At the time Nirvana hit, it was a phenomenon that they did. None of them saw success like that coming. Comparing him to other people on that appeared in the game is as unfair as me saying "Thundercracker plays PS3, so you should like it too." or "l33t360 plays Gears, what's your problem?". After all, I'm just looking at a bunch of avatars myself right now.

I agree that Courtney Love is a joke, but she's right. Kurt Cobain would have thrown a fit if he saw his presence in GH5. The fact that Activision is using his visage just to sell units is amazingly insensitive; their marketing strategy is counter to everything that Kurt stood for. It's a joke, all of it. The only reason I'm not buying GH5. This whole situation really makes me angry.
