'The Green Hornet': Nicholas Cage Is OUTAs if this production needed more bad news, it appears that Nicolas Cage has quit The Green Hornet. Cage, who was originally slated to play the villain of film called Mr. X, will instead star in the upcoming thriller, The Hungry Rabbit Jumps. In the revenge drama, Cage will join an underground group of vigilantes after the murder of his wife. (Sounds like The Punisher in a "super-team" context.)

It's pretty easy for a news writer looking to maximize the dramatic spin, to say that The Green Hornet is a "cursed" production. While I wouldn't go quite that far (obvioulsy most films have their share of troubles,) the string of huge obstacles that keep occurring do speak for themselves.

After dragging its heels getting off the ground with script issues, it ran into a long ordeal over signature character, Kato, as it lost its star/director, Stephen Chow. On the heels of that, there was the (somewhat embarrassing) Comic Con showing of the infamous "car" which came to represent how morbidly behind schedule this film had fallen (a fact that star, Seth Rogen himself acknowledges in his press comments.) With that long ordeal behind it, they now have Taiwanese film star, Jay Chou looking to make the role work, Cameron Diaz as leading lady, Lenore Case, and Nicolas Cage supposedly locked-in to be the Green Hornet's antagonist. Well...not so much the latter now, as the drama continues.

Is this yet another potentially fatal blow to this production? Probably not. Frankly, if it was able to survive "the Kato ordeal," this shouldn't be too much of a problem. However, it's obviously not a step in the right direction, considering how quickly the clock is ticking away towards the film's projected December 17, 2010 release date. (Just over a year, is not much time when it comes to a big-budget comic/action film like this.)

Hang in there, Green Hornet, I'm sure you'll have your "plot-revealing while you're captured" nemesis in no time!
