Over the weekend, Naughty Dog revealed details about a limited edition (aka the Fortune Hunter edition) version of its highly anticipated sequel Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. And while I don't really have any strong feelings for or against special editions (if you love a game enough to throw down the cash for a SE, then more power to you), I’m particularly fond of how Naughty Dog has approached this special edition.
See, rather than simply putting out a big box filled with collectible goodies that anyone with the appropriate amount of cash could pick up, Naughty Dog has decided to make its limited edition even more so by requiring players to win it. That’s right. These babies will not be sold in stores. And if that wasn’t painfully unfair enough, here’s what each one includes:
- An exact in-game replica of the Phurba Dagger Artifact with stand
- Collectible art book
- Game downloads
- Collector case autographed by Naughty Dog
Now, Naughty Dog hasn’t revealed all of the ways that players will be able to win these editions, however there will apparently be chances offered over at the official PlayStation blog, in PlayStation Home, and during the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta starting September 15th. So if you’re looking to be the envy of your circle of Uncharted-loving friends, you now have your mission.

Well, sweepstakes are always hard to win but if you do, its more meaningful than buying it at a store cuase anyone can get it. So I guess its a good idea, and at the same time its a bad idea:p

I never buy special editions. They always seem to be a rip off and are packed with a bunch of junk I dont want and would likely throw away in a couple of years. Regardless, I will be picking up the normal version DAY 1.

Does not matter to me. I got one special edition game by buying a used video game at Gamestop. So even if you win it, that does not mean you will not sell it to Gamestop after you are finished with it.

I just bought the Arkham Asylum collectors edition and now I think that I just wasted my money. A plastic batarang, a book of artwork I can see in the game and a disc of behind the scene extras that are boring. I at least thought the disc would be interesting but the featurettes are too short and don't really go into detail on anything. The only good item that was in the box was the cover of the artwork book because I may be able to reuse it if I find a notebook the same size. I don't think I'll be purchasing anymore collectors/limited editions.

hmmm, looks awsome and I deffinately want to win one. The only downside to having to win it is that if your not lucky enough to win one, then you miss out...
I am a huge fan of SE games. Although I do not buy many, if the game comes with what I think is worth the money then I will. For example Im buying the HE of MW2 because I dont think the PE is worth that much (and dont care that much about some nvgs, although they are cool). I am more into things like art book, usually with concecpt art [my fav], maybe something like a prop from the game (hate game characters though).

It does give the true meaning of limited. I want to so bad but if not I have the game day 1 anyway. Just want to get the new multiplayer beta, the first one was fun. Like Gears without the clunky people and faster, better match making.

interesting idea i can see the logic cause not everyone can afford or doesnt want to spend the extra cash....considering it cost money to make and distribute the CE's maybe half will sell the rest are just going to go by the wayside
