LucasArts And BioWare Weighing Price Structures For Star Wars: The Old Republic

For those of you out there itching to get your Force-loving hands on BioWare’s massively-multiplayer role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic you’ll be interested to know that BioWare and LucasArts are currently debating about what pricing structures will be included in the game.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez said there will most likely be several pricing options available to players, including subscriptions and micro-transactions, but the details have yet to be worked out. Rodriguez also revealed during Gamescom 2009 that he expects the game to receive at least as much support as LucasArts sunk into Star Wars: Galaxies, which was over seven years.

To drive and sustain this level of support, Rodriguez said LucasArts is taking a global view of The Old Republic in terms of its appeal and design.

“You start looking at how different communities, territories such as Asia, actually play games, and we start to consider it all - especially if we want it to be a worldwide phenomenon."

What kind of pricing structure do you expect/want for The Old Republic?

I know ppl are saying that this game should have a subscription fee, but really, it should be free. I think Lucas and Bioware have enough money to allow their fans to play this game for free. There may not me another Star wars movie coming out at any time soon. But Lucas is getting money from all of the clone wars cartoon toys and videos that get put out. Also, their are still books being written on the star wars universe. So I think lucas has a bit of cash tucked away to help make this game not have a monthly fee.

LucasArts needs to desperately make this game successful and the first thign that comes to mind is NO PLAYABLE JEDIS.That's what sunk SWG among a hundred other things and what WILL sink Old Republic.I've bee keeping close tabs on STO(Star Trek Online) and have seen a playable early beta version at a company trade show and can easily say Cryptic DEFINITELY has a big winner on it's hands.Imo it looks alot more promising that Old Republic(sorry guys, it's the truth so far, especially if you use SWG as a barometer).

I would gladly pay $60.00 for this game without the monthly fees. I will be quite disappointed if it does follow the common subscription model (Sorry, no game is worth my marriage). I was a big fan or KOTR (1 not 2) and was excited when Bioware decided they were going to do it again. Bioware, if you are following this, please go with a flat fee to play. You will probably make me and a lot of other player eager to play The Old Republic very happy.

I'm definitely hoping toward a Guild Wars like pricing. 50 bucks ( or maybe more considering the massiveness of this game) for full access to all aspects of the game. Subscription fees could lose Bioware a lot of customers on this one.

i'm fine with the monthly fee standard, however if one is to play multiple MMO's those monthly fees add up. persoally, i play WoW and i would want to play the Old Republic, Star Trek Online and possibly even Aion. If TOR was a micro-transaction only that would work well, or at least it wouldn't hit the pocket book so hard.

in the wake of the Dreadnaught that is WoW, i think a non-subscription method would be best for most MMO's. There is no way any company out there is going to even come close to WoW's sub numbers. the best thing MMO developers can do, is offer the cheapest way in possible and hope that they make the money they desire through micro-transactions.

i'm a SWG vet i went through the NGE and i have zero faith that LuasArts can deliver a solid worth while MMO. i don't care who is developing, the people running LucasArts MMO division are utter morons (i'd like to be more harsh but not today) all they care about is making money, when they should concentrate on making a great game and the money wlll inevitably follow. FYI LucasArts has a major say in what BW does or doesn't do with the game and while i trust BW to mke an amazing poduct, i know that LucasArts will find a way to ruin it. the NGE is the prime example, i you don't know what the NGE is i suggest looking it up, you will the true side of LucasArts and their greed laden agenda.

I know I'll be very sad if they go with the micro option. It really makes the gap between players so much wider when you have special item's you can buy and all those small little promo's or gold. Given it happens with third parties in other games but to have it just built in without demand deciding price just seems like a fatal error.

I would even pay $75.00 for the box if they go the f2p model. Monthly fees are the old way of doing things.

I've wanted to say this from the 1st time I heard that ToR was a PC only game... That's BS ! Where is the game for OUR home gaming systems ? We are the one's who made KotOR a smash hit ! It was X Box game of the year, Not Pc ! We supported the 1st two games and have been waiting so very long for KotOR 3 only to have the tOR come out in it's place, and we can not even play it if our computers are not up to par. Thanks BioWare, & Lucusarts for the slap in the face !

knowing that it comes from Lucas, and they make good games we are going to see a monthly fee charge, i wont mind nothing more than $10 month by month and cancel anytime, well WOW has that but $15 too much

I've been thinking that this would be the game that brought me back into the dark depths of EMEMOHdom, and honestly I can say that subscriptions are the best way to go for a game that expects to keep giving quality content later on by having a constant influx of funding. Also shows when something needs to be done when subscriptions start bailing out.

I would though, like to see a lifetime option much like how LOTRO had. Would have saved me some cash in the long run of my WoW days...

If This game had a lifetime Subscription i would jump on bored for 2 reasons, 1 Brand, 2 Developer, i like paying monthly i take a 4 month break from wow play 1 month then leave, in that 1 month i did not buy any other games so the savings is large, i am fine with micro transactions as long as it does not give you advantage over the normal monthly payer. A free MMO is a bad idea for the reason that when you buy the game. there is no promise of future content, If you pay monthly or a micro transaction system you Guarantee wages. Look at ultima online it has been around since 1997 and people are still playing it, and they just received a expansion. Do you think that game would still be around if they did not charge a monthly fee. And for the record guild wars does use micro transactions for other related items IE bank slots, Char customization after creation. you may not use it but it is there

To Recap I am happy with monthly fees and micro transactions, as long as micro transactions does not give a player a advantage over monthly fee they should be on par.

    Thanks for Reading

This would be my first MMORPG so I have no idea what kind of payment option I would like. But I do know I don't want to pay for an entire year and then only play it a couple weeks outta the year. This game is really coming out at a bad time, right when I head off to college. I'm gonna have to study! Thanks Bioware! If I fail I'm coming for you! lol

Given the amount of voice talent and work that is going into the game, I expect nothing less then Subscription based fees, especially since patches and expansions as we move to the future for this title will start rivaling Movie Budgets in the amount of dollars needed. There are games that can be supported by the Micro-Payment option, and I am afraid that SW:TOR will not be one of them. It is yet to be proven the DDO will save itself using the Micro-payment system just implemented.

I would prefer to pay a monthly fee if I now that the game will receive consistent, free updates and top-notch customer support. Micro-transactions should be optional, maybe allowing you to buy items that might otherwise be very difficult to find in-game.

If that's the case, standard subscriptions will probably be in place (1, 3 and 6 month), but I'd love to see a Lifetime being offered, as well. I'd invest in that just based on what I've seen so far and Bioware's reputation for quality product.

They could go the way of Guild Wars and be sustained quite nicely...I mean GW is still going strong and many eagerly anticipate GW2.

What I think they should do is go the way of hopefully Turbine (with their most horribly made LOTRO game)....offer the option of either paying a monthly fee, or paying one time/lifetime fee (maybe in the $150 range) to play.

Of course...the last option is the WoW/UO (just about every other major company game out there) one of a monthly fee.

i would rather pay month to month and actually work for my items, instead of using my daddy's credit card to pay for items to increase my stats on my toon like some people that dont want to do the work.

I'd say a monthly fee like current MMOs offer. Cheaper, of course, but a monthly fee. I've done it with WOW and I will probably do it with this game. You CAN drop the sub if you get bored. Been there and done that too. Yeah, I have 1 or 2 weeks left of game time, but I've already paid for a month, so I'm not really out extra money by that point. And, as said before, I don't like the micro-transaction idea. IMO it makes me feel like I'm working for my character rather than playing a game. I work all week to play a game to have fun and forget bills and such. Micro-transactions would ruin that feeling.

Micro-transactions are lame. They just allow the little whiny kids who grief others to play without any sort of punishment if they get banned. It allows for people to make as many accounts as they want and spam gold or whatever. It ruins it for those of us who have been waiting for this game for years. It creates a game ruled by new junk to buy. I would much rather pay a 15 dollar/ month subscription fee and at least clear out some of the babies, farmers and unnecessary junk from inventory.

How hard is it to come up with 15 dollars a month? A twelve year old can earn that much a month as well as any college kid. Donate plasma, work on campus or just use the money you spend on booze on this instead. Gawl!

A lifetime option like what is available in Lord of The Rings Online would be good. Sort of like: 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, 1 year, and finally Lifetime as the final option.
