Power-ups are fun to USE but I'd like to see a game make them give a passive effect as well. So there's a bit more thought process involved and you have to make some tough decisions. Something like Nitro should give a passive top speed and acceleration increase which is nice for someone towards the front of the race but for someone in the back it could provide the use effect of extreme but temporary speed increase (consuming the power-up in the process).
