Earlier this week, I basically questioned whether music games were dead, and asked what developers could possibly do to "add value" to a genre that, at its core, is a high-tech version of Simon Says. While they didn't say anything specific, Harmonix did address the issue in a recent interview with computer and video games.
When asked what was next for the Rock Band line, Harmonix's John Drake said:
What's next is a more authentic gameplay experience, so that you really feel like you're playing a real concert. We're all real musicians and we care a lot about making music, so I think you're going to see some cool things from Harmonix about what's happening next.
Hmmm... okay, that basically tells us nothing, or, depending on how you look at, tells us everything. I'm not sure how you could make Rock Band more immersive -- maybe an integrated fog machine? Groupie peripheral? -- but I can't wait to find out. Leave your own immersion suggestions in the comment section!
