Do you still have all your old games from past generation consoles? Do you still want to play them? Do they even work in the next-gen console you have? No matter what your answer to any of those questions, you should check out this week's Soapbox.

The Sess sits down to talk about the PS3 Slim's lack of backwards compatability, and uses that as a springboard to explain that while he loves playing old games once in a while, re-releasing them through digital download formats gives developers a chance to go back and fix the small bugs that originally existed in the game. Check out the video below and see if you agree with Adam, then let us know in the comments below.

i do not mind downloading older games at all, that is if i do not already own them. however if i have a game disc i have already paid for i do not want to have to pay to download the exact same game i already own. this is assuming that i am with out a working console. (my ps2 is getting a little rundown) that is why i would like to keep backwards compatibility.

Backwords compatability isnt a make or break for me. but i can see the aggravation. I dont wanna have to pay 50 bucks to buy a digital copy of a game i already paid 50 bucks for a couple years back. Also, they only tend to make the realy popular games available online. halo will be released digitaly on every microsoft system till dooms day, but what about jet set radio future and other great games that kinda flew under the radar.

I'm just saying I would be playing KOTOR on my Xbox 360 right now if it supported party chat while I play.

The main reason most people buy new consoles is to upgrade from their original ones. The act of a customer buying a new console is an obvious indication of his interest in last gen gaming. Most people who are dedicated to last gen systems will likely stay with the last gen systems.
People buy playstation 3's to play the new Resistance, not the original Max Payne.

im sure this will never be read, blah blah blah, but my view is pretty much that until gaming goes 100% digital, then BC is worth it for me, the consumer.

and once it becomes 100% digital, all the more reason why the systems should be able to carry over information.

that being said, i can see both sides of this equation. granted, i have the 60gb PS3, and bout it specifically, because i had a huge library of PS2 games that i knew i would play again. once the BC was being taken out, and the 60gb was no longer being manufactured, i went ahead and bought a used one at gamestop (bad idea, especially when trying to open it to clean the BR lens *shudders*).

case in point, it serves it purpose, and i dont want to have to buy games 3 or 4 times, just because it was really good. however, that begs the question: when PS1 classics come out on the PS3, will they also come out for the PS4? PS5? will they just roll over? will they get their own re-release on the new platform? that becomes mildly pedantic (oops!) in its own right.

as long as physical mediums exist, there should be a way for me to play them on my new hardware. simple as that.

Actually i think backwards compatibility should be kept so long as it doesn't get in the way of making a console. Because while yeah you can hold on to your old console, it may break down one day simply due to old age. cause while the odds of someone stepping on your console and crushing it, or your pet doing something to the cables, might be low, when you consider that once that happens there is little in the way to replace the machine. As such it really is needed to keep some of the classics alive, like the old mega man, because it is the legacy of gaming. i mean its not exactly like old books like Dante's Inferno being kept around but still this is how we got here in games.to be honest i like emulators because i don't know how in the world i am going to get a hold of an nes or N64 yet i still want to play those old games that i never could beat as a kid, most likely because i was too young to understand how to save (yeah i was kind of really bad at games when i was young)(also i was born in 94 so don't bash me on it). cause the kids who are picking up games now aren't going to have ever seen games like Majora's mask, which was about the best exploration in a game, or orcarana of time, which explains the whole back drop to the wind waker plot. cause face it, we don't want these games to fade away into nothing one broken cable at a time.

HA HA! Did anyone else see GOW2 crash in the background. Crap backwards compatibility! I too believe that backwards compatibility is important, but not when it's done half arsed! Thanks again LameStation.

They should offer both disc and digital dist. Just sell the download at 50$, and the disc at 60$, or some price lower than the disc price. 1. because you can't resell download copy or let someone borrow it.

I agree whole heartedly that backwards compatibility is a stepback from system makers. But making original games DLC, is cool and is a great idea and hopefully the PS3 makers will realize with their price drop, and few games on their system they can make money by making older PS2 games DLC, or even classic PS games. Sony would be smart to do what the Xbox is doing.

I don't agree with Mr. Sessler on most stuff. But I agree fully on this, DLC backwards compatibility. That's the future. (Hopefully games stay on Disks and don't turn into DLC)

Always love how a game is playing in the background to set the mood lol.

It is the machine itself that in my personal view which triggers the nostalgic feelings many of you claim the disk gives yourself. I have played on many consoles and played many of their games, but when I do so it is at one of my best friends place. She always upgrades to the latest game console, which at this point she has a lot of them and a lot of games. It is very convenient when you have a device that can play virtually everything, but it eventually becomes too redundant and obsolete (thank the gods we don t have to bang the side of our monitor when we finish a line in a word processor!). Downloadable content is the best form of viewing media because it is fast, much more convenient, and it makes it easier and cheaper to upgrade older media. Disk artwork can easily be supplemented in the digital form.

As I was saying, my friend has every game console and game out there. Yeah, the game disk is cool, but when we have to pull out the beast that could play it, that s where the memories of the good old days are at.

While I personally would rather be able to play my old games on my PS3, which is why I got one right away, i think Adam is right that evidence is showing that this isn't a huge selling factor. People were more than happy to get by with only being able to play certain XBox games on their 360, and when the PS3 was compatible, people griped about the price, even though they were getting a ton of hardware. And Virtual Console shows that Wii owners don't mind just downloading a new version of an old game. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if our next generation's strategy will be to ignore hardware and either let us download old games, or just leave us with the option of busting out a previous system to play an old game.

for the most part i agree with Sessler but the point i fell that he skipped was that we as a hole don't want to pay again to download a game we already own
a few games on the original xbox like hitman ect... i don't want to pay to download if any thing i would like to but the bar code or some thing to download even if it had a small fee like $1-$3 and i would be happy

Backwards Compatability serves one purpose and one purpse only...Making a gamer's investment last that much longer. If The Big Three turn away from this line of thinking, then there really can't be much said about the "used" game market. On one hand you've got people complaining about how they're not getting a slice of that pie, yet there is a console on the market that did away with its Backwards Compatability.

My PS2 died...It will be far more economical for me to replace that, as opposed to investing in a new system that won't support my current catalogue of games. I think Sony shot themselves in the foot when they decided to go this rout.

Here's another point...I hadn't owned the original Xbox. I bought a 360 and it opened up a whole new library of titles for me to explore BECAUSE I am able to play Xbos Originals on my 360. Something I think Sony didn't think about. How many converts could they have won over?

For the most part, Adam...I agree with your thinking...However, I disagree on one thing you've said in several episodes of Soapbox...The idea of the gamer having an "entitlement" comples. I don't think entitlement has much, if anything at all to do with it...

There's a saying in retail, and in most business "The customer is always right." Well, when it comes to games, the customer I feel should have a say as to the direction a game should, or shouldn't take. Within reason, of course.

Imagine this...A developer releases Pre-Beta footage of a game, and the potential consumers come along and say "Hey, wait a minute guys...This could be done this way...Or you could use this texture to make that background pop." Now the developer looks at these comments and decides that they don't have to change anything because it's their intellectual property. The game launches, and TOTALLY tanks...

So, the head of the sales department walks into the board room and says "Well guys, we didn't make any money on this...Why do you think that is?" Would YOU want to be the guy who's gotta stand up and say "Well, um...We released Pre-Beta footage and we saw that there was some negative feedback but we decided to pay no attention to it because well...We really don't care what people say."

I wouldn't want to be that guy. Because in this scenario, the lack of reaction on the part of the development team had a direct impact on the revenue of the company. In simple terms, history shows us that companies who don't listen to their customer base ultimately end up failing at some point or another.

I think that game developers have an obligation to listen to their audience in so far as to make a game that people will WANT to buy...Because honestly, if a company can't accomidate their core audience...Has no interest in taking to heart the feedback from people who ultimately pay their bills...Then what's the point of being in business?

I agree with Adam. We should embrace re-released games on the marketplace. It's just what you came to love the first time around and they improved it. Giving you that first time feeling of the game again!

SOTN was a really bad idea to have in the back. That game is incredible! It distracted me. =P

I agree with you all the way Adam. While I was upset at first that I didn't BC for my 40gig, I realize that I never traded my PS2 to get my PS3 so I can still my games. And I'm happy that they are bringing out GOW 1&2 out on blu-ray, as I don't want to hook up my PS2 but I know when it comes out I will play through them to go through the story one more time before GOW 3. And yes I still have both games on DVD format as well as my other favorites like the Jak & Daxter series, the Rachet & Clank series, the Kingdom Hearts series, Devil May Cry 1&3, Dragonballz series,Psychonauts, FF12, and DragonQuest. Wished that I keep more of them because the games on the PS2 is the real reason I got my PS3, the sequels to the PS2 games rather. What a wonderful system, and I perdict that the PS3 will have the same bright future. Even with XBL on the 360, I play my PS3 more cause they have games that have been embedded in my heart as a gamer. Here hoping they at least do the same for the Onimusha series or give it a reboot. I loved that series too.

I'm fine with old games being available for download. I am still interested in playing games I missed from last generation or ones that are rare. Don't forget there are alot of great titles out there that do not get an enhanced sequel or next gen makeover when a new console comes out.

I dont want a big huge thing like the ps3, but I want it were I can play at least the last consil before that. Like X-Box. (But plz make it so it doesent freez on me randomly) And besides, the Ps3 sucks at reading older Ps games. (It wont read my Tomb Raider 1-3 games :( or Dark Stone) I also always want the games on discs because not all of us can oford internet.
