Dudes and dudettes, grab your fake guitars and get ready to rock out to...Sunny Day Real Estate and Elliot Smith! It's a depressing double play with Guitar Hero 5! No, seriously, those artists are on the track list, but so are Nirvana and Johnny Cash and according to Patrick Klepek, the game's pretty kick butt (whether you're a metal head or a total emo). From his review:
"It's hard to believe we're already on Guitar Hero 5. I remember sneaking into Red Octane's pint-sized E3 booth years ago to see the first Guitar Hero prototype. There was no hype. These days, music games are a dominating force in the industry. The Guitar Hero series has been playing catch-up since Harmonix split to make Rock Band, however, and while Neversoft has admirably picked up the slack, each edition since the divide has been a little…off. Guitar Hero 5, however, is a return to form for the series."

I'm glad the game was as good as it was hyped, my pre-order was very much worth it.

An easy 5/5
leakime
I would give it a 5 out of 5 but I'm a GH fanboy who enjoys some good gameplay and a good guitar peripheral so what do I know.

I'll probly get this later tis year just for Feel Good Inc. And see my avatar randomly rock it out.

I think its pretty funny that there are several people saying that this game is easily a 5/5. I'm pretty sure G4 has been playing this game for more than the less than one day that any of you have. I know that sometimes when I first get a game I'm super excited about it and I'm like "yeah, its awesome, 5/5" only to play through it and never touch it again and later say "It was alright maybe a 3/5". Basicly what I'm getting at is you cant make a valid opinion or properly grade a game in less than one day of play time.

The REAL Guitar Hero game comes out later this year. GH Van Halen will finally give the players of plastic planks something to smile about. And getting that free is the only reason to get GH5. Well that and Jeff Beck's "Scatterbrain".

too bad the guitar hero wt guitars are crap. the wammy has broke in the same spot on three different guitars.

Dana, what Sunny Day tracks are on there???
in circles? friday?
hahah id laugh so hard i fit was "guitar and video games".
but uh... how exactly can an early 90s quote unquote "emo" band be something to rock out to? but seriously, this is totally great news.
and uh, what elliot smith track(s)??
this should be seriously interesting...

To those questioning the Kurt Cobain bashing, it's not Cobain bashing, it's questioning his inclusion in the game. In case you don't recall, Kurt Cobain blew his brains out 15 years ago. The man wrote some great lyrics and had a powerful voice, but I don't think anyone would put him on their list of great guitar players. The inclusion of a creepy looking, poorly rendered version of him in this game is questionable. The only other artist that has appeared in any of these games with a questionable death is Jimi Hendrix, who many (including myself) would say is arguably one of the greatest, most influential guitarists of all time. Also Jimi died about 30 years ago, alot more healing in those extra 15 years. I loved Nirvana and will always remember the day that we heard that Kurt was gone. Iam always excited to see or hear newly released things from their archives, but not this.

ok, riddle me this...G4 is does lots of advertising, and in the world of tech, they are numeral uno, so whos to say, even if GH5 really deserves a 3-2/5 that they arent getting paid to make it look better than it is and make it 4/5.Gh is Gh and nothing is different, so i can play with two drums at the same time, yay, that means i wont hear TURD outta the speakers unless they r full blast...and so on

i cant believe people still waste there money on this game. i have played rock band and guitar hero and they were fun and entertaining for a couple of hours at most but thats about it. i like games with more depth, not just doing the same thing over and over again

I noticed how Guitar hero 4 just copied off of Rock band with the extra peripherals. I noticed how Guitar hero 4 added absolutely nothing new to the equation except a crappy song maker that was extremely difficult to use. Maybe Guitar hero will get higher ratings if they actually pace themselves with releasing games instead of releasing a new game every 3 months for a shameless cash-in.

It always seem as if XPlay/Reviewers are biased towards Rock Band, I mean seriously Guitar Hero 4(World Tour) was just like Rock Band in every way, except better in my opinion for custom sound tracks, deeper customizations and more. But it still got a 4/5 while Rock Band 2 got a ... wait for it...a 5/5 when it did really nothing new except add more songs and deeper the UI. I already know that just because XPlay/Reviewers or anybody in general says a game is bad doesnt mean you wont like it but seriously does anybody else notice this?

Hahah come on man, do you really put that much stock in numerical ratings systems? In my opinion, a game that is rated 5/5 should be "one of the best games ever made". No, they don't even stick to that. They rate a lot of games that are just generally hyped up 5 stars. Like Final Fantasy 12. The game was good but it wasn't as good as certain predecessors. But this isn't about FF. All I'm saying is that the score they give it isn't that big of a deal and it really doesn't mean anything. 4 out of 5 is fine.
The Party mode does look interesting! I have to admit. I'm happy I pre-ordered this to get the free Van Halen. I hope it gets here tomorrow. >_>

Guitar Hero 4 and the other random additions to the GH franchise really has me down. No offense to everyone who still holds GH as their top, I love their drum kit(especially the bass pedal) but the songs are just... easy...
Rock Band dishes out the songs and the difficulty, though I like the GH drum kit better, as I said.
I'm hoping for the success of GH5 but, frankly, I'm not counting on purchasing it.
gamegodtre
no i think it deserves a 3 out of five or less for the song selection. i say this because it is alled guitar hero but has very little hard guitar songs on it. then again ive played all the guitar heros up to now but it has stoped being about the guitar and more about the band why not just rename it band hero and be done with it already since GH has gotten less to do with guitars since GH 3 which i thought was the best when it came to songs and there toughness for guitar.
mangazo15
Best music/ rythim game out there by F-ing far screw you xplay giving it a 4/5 IT SHOULD BE A 5/5.
