Sony: PSP Go Designed To Thwart Pirates

Sony PlayStation Portable PSP go

To many members of the gaming population, one of the main selling points of the original PlayStation Portable was the ability to mod the system. The new PSP Go, though, will not offer the same opportunities to modders and/or pirates.

The last couple iterations of the PSP featured a removable battery that could be replaced with a hack friendly power-source, but according to Sony, the new handheld will not allow this.

Sony's John Koller said, "You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that," Koller explained. "There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."

I don't like this news on principle: Anything that limits my options as a consumer is bad. But I never mod anything anyway. I'm not into piracy, and I don't have the patience to mod things to play homebrew games or otherwise change their functionality. I'm just not interested enough to get seriously into that kind of "scene." Maybe you're different, though. Are you a modder? Does the news that the PSP Go doesn't support modding change your opinion of the system at all?

Yeah just means a little hex editing is in store. Get some old game, run the hacked save. Exploit mods the firmware, etc etc etc.

And in a few years you have to buy a new one because the battery is dead, making you want to make up for your losses by waiting for the new hack instead of buying the BIG games.

    Stupid.

Improve something else, like make it have better controls or touch or something.

ack didnt know i was logged in. this is just rediculous ive had every psp there is except the go and the best imo is the 1st gen fat boy with the ir. i love the hdtv output the slim has but irshell and usbtv out is more customizable. both my fat and slim psps are super hacked and its insane what these things can do especially my fat running 1.50 firmware kernal. irshell is simply amazing making your psp look like windows and also supports multitasking and mp3 playing while in game not to mention you can stream media/games/etc to your psp from pc via wifi or usb cable i could go on forever. hell ive only had one illegal game and it was the UNCENSORED version of manhunt 2 and it was amazing it does not exist to buy so i didnt feel bad about dl'ing it but i deleted when i was done. i use my psp for apps and music and almost everything but games there simply are not enough good games but being able to mod it and make it do other things is what keeps people interested in it. like a replay value, well i beat manhunt lets find out how to twitter from my psp lol. pspgo will be hacked but it will take a while im sure. its still very hard to hack older psps that have been upgraded to newer firmwares, dont get me started on gta liberty stories or lumines, thank god i didnt have to go that route. im going on a rant, in short i agree with most the ppl here that they should not be trying to take funcunality away from us and to use the excuse that its to stop pirating games....rofl they better start making some games to say that

lol, the original PSP wasn't exactly hacker friendly either. Considering the PSP games were on a new format and were ripped, managing to get a 1-2GB file ripped from its HDD will be done quickly. Sure the firmware will be continually tweaked to lock the piracy out but a new exploits will be found and the cat and mouse game will continue on the updated psp.

Well... *cough cough* its sony's fault for pirates modding their psp's in the first place! *cough* if they would hurry up and release original playstation games that people want to play!!!! *chokes* they wouldnt have such a big problem.... like the psp go isnt going to be modded.... sony needs to realize that its gonna happen. I hope the analog isnt as easy to break as the others, and They better be making games from the ps2 and games that are good to play

Hmm, I dunno. Hackers are a determined bunch. I'm not for modding my stuff, but hey, that doesn't mean out there aren't willing to try modding the PSPgo. I think there's a way and frankly, I'm kinda interested to see how the hackers will face this new challenge.

Let's be honest here, it's common knowledge that if anything is sold to the public it will be modded in some way, from a pencil, (yes, I use to carve an ergonimc grip into my #2 pencils) to a portable computer. There are iPod touches running the full OS X 10.5 and still utilizing it's touch screen functions.

I gaurantee you will see a hacked PSP Go within the month of release.

For all the ppl complaining about bad batteries going dead fast, you guys really need to learn how to properly charge your batteries and do proper charge cycling. As in you fully discharge them and fully recharge them at least once a month. Also dont let the battery sit empty for long periods of time.

I have had my psp 1000 since launch day and the battery pack it has is still going strong and hasent changed one bit. Same goes for my cell phone battery and other rechargable batteries i have.

Just remember dont go charging the battery when its half full or when the battery is very warm.

Now for not being able to change the battery to thwart hackers...well its a small deal. Sony does not want any kind of ripping going on because that would lead to to many sales being lost. But if you really want to know, sony is mostly moving more twards digital distrobution anyway so you will have to buy the games from the psn. We already see this happening with alot of the newer games coming out where the games are going straight to DD instead of heading to a umd disk.

Also with the addition of the PSP mini programs you will see more developers just making DD programs. Sony is shifting gears and soon you wont see many umds at the local game store. If the games are only available only from the psn, it means the game wont be pirated as easily as it is with umds.

A wile back on the sony forums alot of the known hackers complained that the psn games are easier to hack then the umd games, but i laughed and asked them that if it was so much easier to hack the psn downloads then why are they complaining if sony changed to all downloadable content...i never got an answer. Mostly because the hackers where trying so hard to keep sony fron changing to DD games mostly because they know that the DD content is harder to hack then copying the umd games.

Also Sony wont say it but some time in the near future i would see more ppl with hacked psp's that download the games being blocked from the psn, at least from the psp games.

BS nothing is unhackable. If I buy a PSPgo all I will do is steal the games. Why would I bother paying for DLC when its free. This was a dumb idea and I plan to help the hackers show sony they were WRONG.

Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous not being able to change batteries.
There certainly is nothing 'green' about arbitrary limitations that shorten product life.
Oh well, just call it another Sony Epic Fail. They should have a patent on it by now.
