PSP Mini Pricing Should Be Similar To iPhone Applications, Says Developer

Several PSP Mini games announced at GamesCom 2009 are ports of games already on iPhone. One is Hero of Sparta, an impressive-looking brawler getting upgraded for a downloadable PSP debut. The upgrades are largely related to the controls and visual fidelity, but will otherwise be the same game. It begs the question: how much should it cost? Should it be priced like the iPhone version?

Hero of Sparta is currently $1.99 through iTunes, but the game launched at $9.99. Price fluctuations are normal on iTunes to stimulate sales, but it's unclear whether a similar strategy is possible through PlayStation Network. In any case, Sony has not announced a specific pricing hierarchy for PSP Minis and Gameloft isn't about to spill the beans.

"Sony will be the first to make any official announcement on this subject," said Gameloft public relations manager Carmen Pearson in an e-mail. "But from a customer perspective, we think that the pricing should be in similar range on both marketplaces."

The second comment may provide some insight into Sony's strategy. We should be hearing more about the pricing of PSP Minis soon, but it's interesting that one prominent iPhone publisher-turned-PSP Mini producer expects the pricing to end up roughly the same in both marketplaces.

Do you agree?
