With the Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 fighting it out at the $299 price point, many industry insiders are wondering what Nintendo will do to maintain its gargantuan lead with its Wii console. Let's face it, at $249 the Wii seems like a rip off compared to its competitors. Although it offers a unique experience with its motion controls, its raw horsepower and multimedia capabilities are considerably behind the other two consoles.EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich believes that Nintendo needs to drop its price to $199. He said:
"Essentially, Nintendo stole potential PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consumers from this hardware lifecycle three years in advance.
In order to maintain this position Nintendo should drop their Wii console down to $199, not because the current Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 pricing structure poses a threat; rather, because they will eventually pose a threat. Nintendo's strategy should be to capture as many consumer dollars as possible while their competitors are still weak in their offerings to the casual audience and price sensitive consumers."
It's a sensible argument, but some would say that at $50 price cut isn't enough. Since the Nintendo Wii was the only home console this generation sold at a profitable price from the get go, surely a more drastic cut can be made three years later, right? While casual consumers can be swayed by a $100 difference, any shopper with a modicum of console knowledge can see that you are getting more for your money with the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
What do you think Nintendo has to due to compete with the recent price cuts? Is reducing the Wii's price to $199 enough? How about $149? Or is Nintendo's lead so big that it doesn't even matter? Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

walked into gamestop monday and the wiis were $199. guess it wasn't a rumor after all!
I bought a DSi, btw. I already have a Wii ^.^

Now the Wii actually is $199. But it still has enough potential to be great, but only with add ons, like a blu-ray player, or something to make it H-D, or even 1 good game besides the Wii sports games.

I stood in the line on November 19, 2006 at a Toy's R Us for this system for that 250 price. If they want to drop it then drop it. It will benefit everyone else that would like to have the awesome Wii.

I have had the Wii since when it first came out. Nintendo needs to listen to their gaming community and up its abilities. Larger drive so you can download more wii ware games and also allow for it to play back either dvd's or even blu-ray or HD capable. If they did this consumers would see the value add and go for it! If not, as a parent the unit has so much value add since it gets kids off their butts and into motion. I would love to see it in all black like they are releasing internationally. The controllers all match as well. Rather than lower the price of the Nintendo Wii, lower the game prices by another 10 dollars and you will corner the market! So instead of 49.99 for an average game is would be 39.99 that would be a 20 dollar difference from most Sony PS3 Games that run for 59.99. More importantly, I think that Nintendo is getting soft and not spending enough advertising dollars. I don't see any new adds for: "Wii would like to play!"

"What do you think Nintendo has to due to compete with the recent price cuts?"
Just wanted to add that it should be "do" and not "due"
Apart from that, I plan on buying a Wii in the next month or so. The price doesn't really bother me because I bought a 360 when they were over priced. I just want something really different and that's what the Wii seems to be.

This is true, but "casual consumers" is where the money is....especially for the Nintendo Wii.. "Harcore gamers" are the minority and Nintendo can survive without them. (More Than Survive!)
The average shopper doesn't have a "modicum of console knowledge," so most will buy the "family friendly" console that gives them and their family some exercise.
I remember at the beginning of the console war when the "experts" and "analysts" predicted that the Wii would lose and lose badly...... (Wow, where they really out of touch with "mainstream" consumers.

I love Nintendo, but I always thought they should be up there as far as hardware. Wii mote is cool but where's the DVD or Blu Ray? They can keep the small disc size, but please be some what up there with your rivals. Nintendo could've keep the Wii at $299 if they had at least DVD. That my thought.

If nintendo lowers the Wii price to $199 or $149, then thats just 50 to 100 bucks worth of games or game equipment that i can spend on it. Since the Wii can't compete with the proscessing power of the other 2 systems, they might as well lower the pirce. But a lower price cut might mean they won't inclucde a game with the perchace of the system. I'm a big nintendo fan and I'll buy the Wii regaurdless. I love the system and the games that come with it. Maybe i'll wait and see around the christmas season if they lower the price or not first befofre i buy it.

I'll add that even though I love my Wii, I can honestly say that i only have 4 games for it and i've had it for a little over a year now, I would like to use it again xD

Totally unrelated:
As a proud Wii owner (Not alot of us out there) We need a Donkey Kong 64 sequel or remake, and a new Starfox game as well, and we wont have any of that "sideways controller ship control" crap either, cuz im dure it will turnout to be horrible. As for the Donkey 64 sequel, make it as good as the the original cuz it was awesome!!!!!! Kudos on the games comin out next year, they all sound awesome. Wii FTW! (with pride)

Nintendo's lead is phenomenal. They have no worries. If anything, they may want to bundle it with,1-3 games and keep printing money.
sharkeysplace
and with now 4th gen games already being shown they should definitly do price cut
sharkeysplace
when i bought the wii christmas 2008 i bought cuz i thought u know maby it would entertain me but i used it for 2 days cuz i cant find games that are entertaining. i believe they should do price cut of $100 cuz it aint worth the $250 with lack of games compared to xbox 360 that has titles like halo and gear of war ps3 has many anime series and the final fantasy series. sure there is zelda mario and sonic but those are getting to b jsut like wii sports and the motion controls with wii isnt as good as i hoped if they don't make a price cut this christmas will b a sell out for ps3 and xbox 360 for ages 13-25 and a median age of 30 for the wii

If Nintendo really wanted to drop the price they would have by now. But thinking about it, now that the other competing systems have already done this, I'm sure Nintendo has been thinking about it. I bet they do drop the price on both the Wii and DSi.
It was bound to happen sooner or later...
Now, if Nintendo converted their Wii, into the infamous WiiHD...$250 sounds great to me! .....no WiiHD, $150-$199 tops.
sumogamer
dropping the price isnt gonna do anything at all its the games for the wii they need to worry about the graphics the gameplay people look forward to the games for the wii not the wii
godlike79
sony and microsoft are only dropping there price to boost sales..that all nintendo are doing fine.the ds is $129,the dsi$169 why and the f$#ck.would they drop the wii too$199 .$249 is a great deal if u like gaming @ 480p.lol its a good system..
capthavic
I have my doubts they will drop the price anytime soon. They certainly aren't worried that they have nothing to play on them and in no hurry to change that.
PhazonSpectre
Star Fox Wii is inbound. Stay up on Nintendo they wont let you down.

It is really hard to say. Nintendo has such a huge lead in casual and portable markets, they do not need to have a price drop. It is a good idea to do it because now that the 120 GIG Xbox 360 and PS3 are at an affordable price range and the 360 arcade is at $199 (lower than Wii), it would be a good idea in the long run.
Whiteaura1
Err.. funny how months ago you had the same story going for ps3 "Analysts say PS3 needs a price cut" ETC , etc..
talk about the media pressuring game companies to make stuff cheaper roflrofl
i uh..
don't think its gonna fly with nintendo.. seriously..
:p.. they are quite confident in their new IP's i mean .. who doesn't want to play a remade version of super mario bros but with 4 players?..
can u say like .. 2 hours then boring? :P.. Mario = great.. constant remakes of crap = not great..no matter what shiny new paint job it has..
Nintendo. omfg.. just give out the new zelda already.. and if there is ANY Bull S .. about you trying something "new" with it.. like implimenting some gay new control quirk.. im gonna tear your throat.. give me the zelda i know and love! >:(
