New Fight Night Round 4 Button Controls Detailed, Coming August 27

A while back, it was revealed that EA Sports was planning to release a patch that would add traditional button controls to its acclaimed boxing title Fight Night Round 4, so as to supplement the game’s touted thumbstick controls. Well, that update will be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store tomorrow (August 27).

Additionally, Xbox Live Silver members and PS3 users will be able to download the free Boxer Pack II on Thursday as well. And when I say “be able to,” I really mean, “be forced to,” since you won’t be able to access the new button controls, or enjoy the other gameplay improvements provided by the new patch, without first installing the free pack.

In case you feel like doing some finger exercises while you wait for the update to be released tomorrow, click through to see the full control scheme.

Xbox 360 – Config 5 &6:

  • A Button: Left Hook (Head)
  • X Button: Left Straight (Head)
  • X + A Button: Left Uppercut (Head)
  • Y Button: Right Straight (Head)
  • B Button: Right Hook (Head)
  • Y + B Button: Right Uppercut (Head)

Hold the Lean Modifier to throw punches to the body.
There is no feinting w/ Button Punches.

Push/Clinch Modifier - RT Config 5/ (LT- Config 6)

  • RT + Y Button: Clinch (LT + Y)
  • RT + X Button: Push (LT + X)

Haymaker Modifier - LB Config 5 / (RB - Config 6)
Switch Stance - RB Config 5 / (LB - Config 6)

Blocking

  • Right Analog is used for Blocking.
  • RT/(LT Config 6) is not required as modifier.

Left Analog Controls

  • Boxer Movement, Leaning, Lunging and Weaving function the same as with Control Configs 1-4.

PlayStation 3 - Config 5 & 6:

  • X Button: Left Hook (Head)
  • SQUARE Button: Left Straight (Head)
  • X + SQUARE Button: Left Uppercut (Head)
  • TRIANGLE Button: Right Straight (Head)
  • CIRCLE Button: Right Hook (Head)
  • TRIANGLE + CIRCLE Button: Right Uppercut (Head)

Hold the Lean Modifier to throw punches to the body.
There is no feinting w/ Button Punches.

Push/Clinch Modifier - RT Config 5/ (LT- Config 6)

  • R2 + TRIANGLE Button: Clinch (L2 + TRIANGLE)
  • R2 + SQUARE Button: Push (L2 + SQUARE)

Haymaker Modifier - L1 Config 5 / (R1 - Config 6)
Switch Stance - R1 Config 5 / (L1 - Config 6)

Blocking

  • Right Analog is used for Blocking.
  • RT/(LT Config 6) is not required as modifier.

Left Analog Controls

  • Boxer Movement, Leaning, Lunging and Weaving function the same as with Control Configs 1-4.

It seems that if you’re familiar with Fight Night Round 3’s control layout, it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up the new configurations. Anyone here prefer fighting with buttons as opposed to thumbsticks?

I know some think the buttons are bad. And the controllers are more fluid. But I like the buttons ONLY because the sticks are non reliable. If your in a real fight and you want to throw a hook, you do so with out much thought. Here you may try and do it, and quite a few time not quit push the analog the right way. So thus your throwing punches you did not even plan to throw a good percent of the time. Your still gonna have to worry about stamina and pace.

dude i agree buttons would take away from the fluidity..im going to vegas for the round 4 of the gamestop tourny and if theres one thing i know it is if you have good defense then button mashers will stand NO chance..people who threw random punches non stop in the previous tournaments got ko'd in the first or second round so for all you spammers good look going against somebody good. Its also harder to counter with face buttons because you have to move your thumb from the buttons to the right analog stick which is annoying when your thumb can just be on the stick at all times..

    those controls still suck.

    i have a better idea

Right Bumper or RT for right hand; LB or LT for left hand and then you use corresponding face button for type of attack.

This new scheme sucks just as bad as the sticks.

Why the hell did they take button control out in the first place? I'll take stick control over buttons any day, but people should be able to set their controls any way they like.

about friggin time. JEEEEZE. I got tired of waiting for this update and traded mine in for batman. I got used to the stick controls but hated them none-the-less. Seriously, I think that was probably one of the biggest mistakes that was made this year (in gaming of course). I say this because I have weekly game tournaments at my house where 15-20 people show up weekly, and not always being the same people. One thing was in common with all of them, that they tried to play it but no one liked it because of the controls. I scrapped it from the line up after three weeks of complaints. Not to mention all the people that I've talked to that said they wouldn't waste their money on a game that forces you to forget everything you've known for years about games and make you play it with a sub-par gimmick (if I wanted my controller to emulate a Wii, I would just play the Wii). The insanity that is the idea that no other option was available blew my mind. Outside of the control issues, the game was fantastic but completely handicapped by what I feel is a gimmick that most arent that interested in except for a few GUNG-HO fans. I dunno, it seems to me that for now they have alienated such a large crowd of people to the point that nobody seems to care anymore (at least new customers) and all of it couldve been avoided had they just made it possible for both control options. I could be wrong but I know what Ive seen and its not good. And for the people that keep complaining about online button mashers...if you lost against someone, man up and take the loss, dont blame the controller or button layout. Thats such a tired excuse. Anyways. Ill get down of the box now as im sure Im ripe for hating.

I just wanna point out it's not button mashing if it's planned out. The button controls are more efficient.
