Final Fantasy VII Cast Of Characters

Final Fantasy VII fans have been clamoring for Square Enix to remake the game. While gamers have had to make due with spin-off sequels, prequels, phone games, anime, and movies about FFVII, it's not quite the same. There are millions of gamers that would kill for a remake. According to Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama, the idea has been discussed, but not officially acted on. Through a translator they told VG247:

"There’s no official project that’s up and running for a remake of Final Fantasy VII at this point. Both Toriyama-san and Kitase-san were involved in the development of the game, however, and it holds a special place in their hearts. They do talk about it on a personal level, like, ‘If we did it it would be like this or like that.’

So, they do talk about it, but there’s no official project yet. But there’s that PSN release that just came out, so if you could play that for the time being, it should be fun."

A few things here -- first of all, I don't believe them. I think they're trying to be cute and coy. A Final Fantasy VII remake would be enormous and sell millions of copies. Unless Square has suddenly developed an aversion to money, I refuse to believe this project isn't being planned. From a business standpoint, it would be stupid not to do it.

Secondly, I'm surprised it hasn't come out yet. It seemed like a brilliant idea for 2007, when the original game celebrated its ten-year anniversary. A lot of gamers would have been happy to give up the PS2 adventures of Vincent Valentine and the mobile adventures of The Turks if it meant devoting resources to an FFVII anniversary project. Oh well, maybe it'll come out for the game's 15-year anniversary?

Any thoughts on what Kitase and Toriyama had to say? Do you believe that "there's no official project yet"? Or is Square Enix simply waiting to surprise gamers?

i could see them easily remaking it, but what would make or break the game for me would be combat. The old combat system would most likely have to be changed to make the game current. I just cannot see the combat being turn-based unless it was something along a FFX hybrid of some sort. Also it would be a great chance for them to add to the story a little bit, and by that i don't mean a deviation from the game's events but add more optional locales that enhance the story.

If it looked like advent children, to a degree, and the combat was somewhat like what you saw in advent, that would be really something. But like i said, a major factor to this remake, and maybe what's holding them back, is how they are going to do the combat system.

Don't reinvent the wheel, just redo the graphics in HD with updated models. Maybe clean up the interface a bit. Doesn't need a dynamic camera, the static views are fine, just re-render in HD and give better textures. Also, DON'T TOUCH the music. We don't need symphonies and orchestras. Use the original, unaltered music.

The only thing I would be okay with changing, is to add a toggle to disable the random battles and have a more Chrono Cross type system where you could see the enemies on the map if you want. Of course, make it an option, though.

C/N: Widescreen HD with updates models, polish, and analog stick support. Keep original music. Rake in bajillions.

... I smell another countdown in the near future!

I've beed hearing about a final fantasy vii remake for a few years now. I'm sure SE has put some thought on the idea. But also, they haven't done it yet... who knows? Maybe they have good reasons for it. Too much hype, maybe?

I agree ith Phoenix. If they do it, the only thing that should change is the voice acting. They'll now have space for high quality audio of them speaking as well as the music. Question is, who would voice them? Probably the FF7:AC Complete crew.

I though I remember someone saying they were not going to remake ff7?

On a purely speculative note, think of the mess that was Advent Children and ask yourself if a remake would be a good thing.

    what would it be called?

I wouldn't mind seeing it, but they'd have to keep gameplay the same, dialogue the same (but with Voice acting now), or else the fanboys will be mad that something has changed.

Square-enix need to stop with the BS ! They made a remake of Kingdom Hearts : chain of Memories that was on the gameboy advance for PS2 ! That was the biggest waste i ever seen. The game came out on Game boy around 2004 - 2005 and it was to explain the events between kingdom hearts 1 and 2 and then they remake the game in less than 3 years for the PS2 after Kingdom Hearts 2 been out for 2 years or less. P{lease tell me does Square enix make any sense ! Yet they release a tech demo for Final Fantasy on the PS3 in 2005 and they say they are not makin a remake ! My phone was ringing off the hook thaty day. If they fellow though with what the fans want they would make a fortune and talking probaly Billions . I pretty sure It would be the top selling game of all time. It would bend ova and anal rape the sales of games like GtA , GOD OF WAR , CALL OF DUTY, GEAR OF WAR and lets like forget the king HALO . So square wake up and smell the money clowns. Stop release side that no one and i mean no one give a flying crap about ! Can we be honest the 10th annivarsity games except for crisis core of course all and i mean all sucked. Just remake the game !!!!!!

    P.S
suggest you make it a PS3 exclusive too ! not taking sides in the the console war but it has history with sony and I fear for your lives if it was to come out on xbox360.

ANd I got both console so dont judge me lmao!!!!!

That year at E3 when Sony Showed the " What FF7 would look like on the PS3" was one of the most exciting moments at an E3. I thought for sure Square would have done this by now. I'm really glad you brought this up, because i was thinking the same thing the other day.

Im surprised they haven't done it. I mean they remake a lot of there games for Japan before they have been on for even a year because the Japanese fan boys eat it up. The difference here is that the other fan boys around the world would easily buy it too. I know I would

Now dont get me wrong here. I love FF7 but I would take a new FF or a new IP any day over a remake. Why? I just would rather experience a new game, a new story, new characters, new gameplay, with new ideas. I realize they would make a killing because millions would buy a FF7 remake including myself but I'm always waiting on the next big title to change the genre like FF7 did and we won't get there any sooner with remakes.

i wonder if they put out the psn version to wet our appetites for a remake? maybe you have the consoles fighting for exclusivity rights and that's holding up the actual remake? anyhow, square would definitely have financial security if they did do a remake. i'll admit, i was excited when i saw the tech demo of the title sequence back before the ps3 was released just like a bunch of other people.

yup...i think square should pull a lucas out of us and do a remake. ol' george tricked me into buying x amount of copies of the original trilogy. shame....

I was a bit surprised for a little while that it was not released back in 2007, until I saw the 10th Anniversary Crisis Core edition of the PSP.

As far as a remake goes, it is a good idea business wise. Their in lies the problem. If it were to become a rushed project, we would likely lose many little charms of the original because they may now be considered "trivial" (Such as the Shinra TV march).

As much as I love Final Fantasy VII, a remake has always seemed very iffy, more so with the recent spin-offs and side stories. I think skipping out on Advent Children and making the original story of the film instead, with a theatre release, would have been absolutely fantastic.

Will the game be redone? No doubt, eventually. No doubt at all. But knowing S.E., they'll announce it in 2012 and release it in 2016

They should just do it already. Everyone know the fanboys want it and even the casual FF fans want it and they could even get new fans with such a remake. It seems incredibly stupid that they wouldn't do it.

I love thinking about how a FF7 remake would turn out, I think its would look pretty cool. But it needs to be a thought.

Old-School FF7 has something about it, it has one of those qualities. From Clouds Square block hands to all the crazy Chocobo races, I personally wouldn't want to se this game remade unless THE ORIGINAL FF7 team got back together to do it.

Also, Padilla, while developing and releasing it in 2007, I think that would have been a double-edged sword because A) PS2 sales would skyrocket, but that would also hurt Sony as they are trying to push the PS3 out there.
