World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Debut Trailer »

After much rumor mongering, the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack is finally official. Titled Cataclysm, Blizzard is promising some pretty major changes to the World of Warcraft landscape. The once-defeated dragon Deathwing has risen from the ashes and wrecked destruction upon the world, fundamentally changing the environment gamers have come to known and love permanently.

Brian Leahy broke the news earlier today when it was announced at BlizzCon 2009, but Blizzard's press release has some more details on the new features in Cataclysm:

  • Two New Playable Races: Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.
  • Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 85 and earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.
  • Classic Zones Remade: Quest to level 60 as you never have before. Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been reforged by the cataclysm and updated with new quests and content.
  • Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms from a whole new perspective.
  • Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
  • New High-Level Content: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great sunken city of Vashj'ir beneath the sea, and enjoy even more high-level raid content than in previous expansions.
  • New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds: Take on PvP objectives and daily quests on Tol Barad Island, a new Wintergrasp-like zone, and wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.
  • Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.
  • New Race and Class Combinations: Explore Azeroth as a gnome priest, blood elf warrior, or one of the other never-before-available race and class combinations.

What features are you most excited about?

Looks like a blast - but after playing this for 2 years and having priests nerfed on and off again - I think my GF would break up with me (which may be a good thing.)

Yawn* BC expansion in Azeroth..yay! how exciting lol. Let that be the nail in the coffin for me. I'm finished untill they give a whole new graphics engine or Diablo 3..whichever comes first. I thought they would be smarter then giving us the same ole song 'n dance, b/c these "neat" new features aren't game changing and get old after 5 mins of play.. the ignorant will be excited about goin to old world, but be quickly reminded of how boring it is to go back to areas you have already pwned...So what if they have a few trees on fire now or something.. graphics still lame 'n gameplay still dry..

Only true exciting thing from blizzcon worth checkin out was Battle.net 2.0, and whatever new diablo 3 footage we get to see..

The Warcraft story line is very intriguing and their landscapes are fantastic to roam around in. They've really done a great job creating such a huge world to traverse, which will be even more fun with flying mounts in Azeroth. But there's a downside to all this. It's the reason me and a few of my friends have quit...

ABOUT 95% OF THE PLAYERS DON'T GIVE TWO *&$(s ABOUT THE STORYLINE OR THE ^#*%&^@ LANDSCAPES.

All it's going to be is more races to complain about/nerf then buff along with the "new talent system" whatever that God awful mess is supposed to mean. More gear for the ppl that won't let you in their guild because you don't have it. Azeroth has changed, which means a lot of ppl saying "Why is this here, this is stupid." And with flying mounts in Azeroth, ganking a low lvl is now 10 times easier for ppl similar to the lvl 80s that have nothing better to do than fly around killing low lvl players.

    It's all pretty ridiculous.

lol...ok highly unimpressed....all they did was reshape azeroth....wonderful...they made tauren look like fools with paladin gear...AWESOME....and lets not forget the new race for each side (which i think the horde got screwed over for again....i mean c'mon....GOBLINS??)....this is a HUGE letdown for me....i stopped playing WoW about a year ago...simply because its going nowhere...this wont even be a repeat of Lich King...it will be worse....only 5 levels....a few more raids and instances....(are they even following the storyline anymore)....anyway...blizzard should be done with WoW...and make something new...thanks for trying blizzard..

This expansion doesnt look to great because they are going to ruin uniqueness among the classes by making crap like tauren pallys and some other very bad combos that just dont make any sense.
and then they are gunna tear apart all the old land just seems like a lazy way of changing the game not to mention how hard it is going to be to lvl new characters.
This new expansion could only possibly be considered "great" by people who havent been playing since Pre-BC

Are you people kidding me?! "OMG THIS IS SO AWSUME LOOKIN! I CAN'T WAITS!"

Really people?? Like 2 others said out of the 30 comments so far, this expansion is GARBAGE. OMG two new races! I can't wait to waste my time and money rerolling a new character that just looks different than the one I have now. Oh but you can play classes on races you couldn't before! OMGZFJ!

Where are the new hero classes? Blizzard makes one big change to the game by adding an unbalanced hero class (Death Knight) and has no plans to release more and level the playing field?

This "expansion" is nothing more than a $49.99 patch.

what concerns me' is the resouces this is gonna require, ive very litle room for expansio in my pc at most a bigger hard drive. a better sound card. i am not in a position to replace my existing pc. im not at all sure i like some of what has come out about cataclysm. i gonna wait till a friend or relative with more disposable income buy the new expansion befor i commit myself to it. i wanna see if it'll be money well spent.

Wtf, soon as I quit WoW, they come out with something that might be epic... And why must they continue to screw the Horde over and over again? Yeah, give the Alliance a cool new race... I am a firm believer that Blizz makes the game only for the Alliance.

And the new cataclysmic world should only be available at a certain lvl. As in, it should be like it normally is until you hit at least 75, then it should tear apart. It'd give it more of a storyline feel.

Just two random points I want to make to the 'complainers'...

    1) This is a HUGE expansion, for a very, very simple reason. They have gone and redone the first world maps. We're not talking just a little change here. "Oh, they prettied up the maps by adding lava and forests to it". We're talking scrapping the old maps and building them all over again so that those places on the map that are broken if you flew over them? Well, they won't be broken now," That's an incrediable amount of work that needed to be done, on top of new zones that they've been adding. It doesn't SEEM like a lot to your untrained eyes, but knowing what they had to do to get it done, I'm impressed.

    2) Yes this game is easy. Doy. Come up with an original complaint. This game was designed to be Anti-Grind. It was the first to embrace Anti-Grind game play. Complaining that it's easy is like complaining that D&D uses Dice. If you didn't want a casual adventuring MMO with a strong storyline, you shouldn't play WOW (and please, stop complaining about it). Wow is designed for the Casual first, and the Hardcore second. Honestly, even the Hard Core WOW players prefer it that way.

I think the defining line in that video was when the narrator said "The world has been broken."

Yes, it is broken, and now they're gonna break it more by opening the classes to every race, and adding another two. I like the game, but since WoTLK I feel the game is much to easy.

I quit WoW over two years ago, sold off my account and all that.

Gotta hand it to Blizzard with these interesting trailers though.

Will it get me to come back? No

Was it worth the few minutes to watch? Most definitely.

I am a Gamer who loves story so I am going to share some with you incase you were unaware. Neltharion, The Earth Warder: is this giant dragon who created this thing called the Dragonsoul/Demonsoul and the reason Neltharion created this was to destroy and control everything, prety much turn him into a god. He used this weapon to completely destroy every blue dragon except Malygos the leader of them. This is why Malygos went completely insane, you can find malygos in the Eye of Eternity Raid. After this happened Neltharion was re-named Deathwing. The Demonsoul was later stolen from him by Malfurion Stormrage, the first Night Elf Druid, and Korialstrasz who can be found atop Wyrmrest Temple in Northrend. Deathwing lost a battle against Malfurion because he used the Demon Soul against him, so he left and now a long time later I guess he is back.
Yeah im done typing... This is just the surface of the story if you want to here more you should look into it.

@ skylerzio first off, theyve had battlegrounds since the very beggining. What they are adding here is a ranking system for battle grounds. And other than the guild levels (which ive never heard of before, but you have apparently) i dont see how they are stealing anything.

Haha, the alliance didnt want the blood elves around because of their slight addiction to magic. But let some werewolves come around and ask to be let in and their suddenly like "Yah guyz, lets all B frends!!1"

I like the revamping of old zone's, though. :)
