World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Debut Trailer »

After much rumor mongering, the latest World of Warcraft expansion pack is finally official. Titled Cataclysm, Blizzard is promising some pretty major changes to the World of Warcraft landscape. The once-defeated dragon Deathwing has risen from the ashes and wrecked destruction upon the world, fundamentally changing the environment gamers have come to known and love permanently.

Brian Leahy broke the news earlier today when it was announced at BlizzCon 2009, but Blizzard's press release has some more details on the new features in Cataclysm:

  • Two New Playable Races: Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.
  • Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 85 and earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.
  • Classic Zones Remade: Quest to level 60 as you never have before. Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been reforged by the cataclysm and updated with new quests and content.
  • Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms from a whole new perspective.
  • Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
  • New High-Level Content: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great sunken city of Vashj'ir beneath the sea, and enjoy even more high-level raid content than in previous expansions.
  • New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds: Take on PvP objectives and daily quests on Tol Barad Island, a new Wintergrasp-like zone, and wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.
  • Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.
  • New Race and Class Combinations: Explore Azeroth as a gnome priest, blood elf warrior, or one of the other never-before-available race and class combinations.

What features are you most excited about?

imagine if the Alliance got the goblins and the Horde got the worgens. Alliance would have 3 midget races and the Horde would have cows and mutts haha.

Ok, you guys aren't getting it at all.

Lets start at the beginning, the change to the world environment isn't simply re-skinning, it is completely re-building the zones. Zones will have different level restrictions and completely new stories. Those of you who think this is a "simple" change are foolish.

5 levels is not a big change, but this expansion isn't about end game its about the beginning content. This makes the game have a higher replay value for players like me who have several high level characters and do not want to play it again for the ninth or tenth time.

Races and classes. ALL RACES CAN NOT BE ALL CLASSES! Stop saying it, they are adding about one or two classes per race, get it right. This makes a difference to players because some of us like the lore around the game and play it for more than the fact that its a new shiny videogame.Plus it makes me feel less limited in my choices of alts, certain combination's should have been in the game from the beginning although others I am personally peeved about (namely Night Elf mages, I mean come on they renounced arcane magic for a reason Blizzard, there names are High Elves and Naga). As far as the new path system goes, you shouldn't be bashing it before you really know what it is, Blizz says it will make your character more unique, taking it beyond simple class and race and making it more. I have to trust Blizzard on this, and if you have played ANY Blizzard game, you would know that they wont let us down (or at least patch it until they aren't letting us down anymore). The new races, Worgen are pretty sweet, I will admit, and it does make sense for them to be on the Alliance. As far as the Gilneans are concerned, the world of Azeroth is still at war with the Scourge and would there for fight the Forsaken as if they were said scourge, making them a part of the Alliance. Don't get me wrong, I am all "For the Horde", and I welcome the Goblins with open arms. Again if you know anything about Warcraft, then you know the Goblins always sided with the Horde (at least early in the series). Having neutral outposts run by goblins is simple, they are the Steamwheedle Cartel, a completely different faction of money loving Goblins where as the ones joining the Horde are a separate faction all together. The Alliance doesn't even really welcome Goblins among them, you go to the Goblin towns not the other way around.

No new hero classes, so what, Death Knights weren't really well received in the first place, why make more that just have to be fixed. People who want hero classes are really just those who aren't happy with what they have. The classes we have now are fine and I would be fine with never having another hero class. If we get more, great, if not, you all will find something else to complain about, so don't worry.

Guild stuff sounds cool. I am sure it wont be all PvP based like you say. It will have to do with PvE content as well, like beat a Raid so many times, and your guild gets a new title or something. If you are only level 72 and your guild is complaining, that's your fault not Blizzards or your guilds for having better players than you. There will always be guilds recruiting, even if they aren't the best. Its up to those in your guild to make it a better guild including yourself!

This looks great, mad props Blizzard, about time we see some changes to old world content. All I ask is for changes to ALL the zones (including BE and Draenei) and maybe some quests in Outland and Northrend so the story makes sense, but again I trust Blizz to take care of that.

HELLO!? arent you guys paying attention?! Blizzard is NOT niglecting any part of wow, they are revisiting the starting areas, and personally i cannot think of how many times i have complained about having to do the same starting quests OVER and OVER again.

Another thing is that they are pushing the story farther, if blizz let the story lay dormant for too long, a lot of the die hard fans would begin to lose interest.

In contrast, i think blizzard is making the game too easy, much too easy. i have to dissagree with all of the new class combinations. being able to pick a race with any/all of the classes defeats the porpose of races themselves.

overall, i think this game looks promising, and hopefully it will bring refreshment and fun to the table. cant wait for the game Blizz!!

Because with tech support on Blizzards forums they don't know anything. They don't provide help for players at all really. They constantly update the graphics. Forcing people who don't have super computers to go buy one just to play there game. You go to forums they say.

    Show us your Dxdiag.exe

Then you show it and wait.

    No response.

So you just wasted your time trying go get some help. This happens to thousands of players. I bet that's not the issue on X box.

    What the???

I just got a warning not to use profanity in posting???

basicly i enjoy the game i am concerned that the recent and future changes will hurt more than help. lich king has been the deathkneel of a lot of guilds the stress of gearing up and raiding the new instances, the (at least from blizz) emphasis on pvp. they as much as admitied they trying to compel people to pvp. personal id rather cut my toes off with rusty wire cutters. my own guild has done almost nothing but pvp since patch 3.2, they are putting me' under a lot of pressure to lvl up to 80 and go with them (i'm lvl 72). the new guild lvl system will make slackers like me' that dont just love pvp a liability in any guild that wants to raid-pvp. bliz doesnt seem to recognize that there are 3 kinds of guilds, the raid-pvp, the social, and the family & friends guild. i wanna know if my pc will even be able to run this stuff, and that question has still not been answered. I suspect all that carefully laid up rep with steamweehdel cartel is about to go go up in a cloud of volcanic dust and ash. i will wait and see but im still not happy with a lot of what they have already shown us.

ok i played WoW for years and after WofLK came out i quit. WofLK was a crappy game addon that made WoW really boring and the fact that DKs started out at 55 shows how lazy blizzard really was and now they come out with a new addon to help fix the last one and they make u pay 40 bucks for everyone they make plus the 180 bucks a year u gotta waste to play it. Now u got new classes for old races. ok now they r really pulling to get members to stay or come back, but what about the story line that was with the org game ? they r no longer following it. and as far as having 11 mill members i think not. 11 mill accounts yes. u got people with 1-5 account botting to power lvl 5 char at the same time and don't forget about all the gold farmer accounts. blizzard is losing accounts cause the game is getting old and boring so this is them trying to fix the game and make more money. think about it they r making $165,000,000.00 every 30 days and 1,980,000,000 a year with 11 mill accounts active and add on all the ex-packs they sold. i quit playing wow and bought a xbox 360. its free to play and the yearly cost of WoW is 3 new 360 games a year or a bunch of used ones. y keep playing the same old boring game. oh don't forget the cost of updating or rebuilding a pc is alot higher then 300 bucks. i know WoW is like a drug to some of u and i feel sorry u fell u need to keep wasting ur money, but don't be fooled its the same game with a skin over. even the new races r from the org game years ago they just changed a few things and made them playable. but it u all wanna fall for it i guess they did something right. i do see some of u were smart and canceled ur accounts and r not falling for this reskin.

Making new toons is gonna be totally different and I think that's what they were trying to go for majorly. This way we won't be doing the same things over and over for our alts.

I think Blizzards in trouble and they know it. With Star Wars: The Old Republic and Champions online coming out soon they know that WoW's supremacy will be challenged so they knew they would need a new expansion and soon. They also knew that if they kept doing the same "New Continent + 10 Levels" crap they wouldn't last much longer.

Apperently the Horde will be getting Southshore, Ashenvale, Aszhara, a new leader (Grom), a revamped capital (Orgrimmar is being reinforced with steel), and the Alliance gained Desolace. Horde victory? Also Thrall's now neutral, Jaina and Cairne have been killed, and Grom is turning the Horde into the Mongolian Empire. Not to mention the Barrens have been split in half by lava, Desolace is now a forest, Wetlands and Darkshore have been flooded, Grim Batol will be out, Uldum will be out (and will be Egyptian themed w/ pyramids), Hyjal will be out, the Elemental Planes will be out, Gnomes may get their city back, two new races, Tauren Paladins and Human Hunters, the second coming of Jesus, and the Naga will be fought in the Maelstrom. Not to mention that leveling from 1-60 will be revamped. Hm... seems like Blizzard is tieing up loose ends... a lot of loose ends. And with a 5 level x-pac, this would leave 3 more x-pacs until level 100. Where in the damned world will they find content for 3 x-pacs after pleasuring the lore-fanatics with tons of land? Meh, I'm rambling. I'll re-activate my account when this comes out, might be the time-kill I've been looking for.

Werewolves? Oh great... can't wait for the vampires with some kind of sparkling aura (Come on, you know since Twilight happened, it HAS to happen) to be a playable in the next expan, whichever, whenever and however that will be.

Here's looking at WoW c.2012 (Sooner if progress and prosper prove me wrong)
