GameStop Sees Profit Potential Of PSP Go: UMD Trade-Ins, Download Codes, Etc.

GameStopSeptember is just over a week away, and then October will be here before you know it, and that means that Sony’s digital darling, the PSP Go, is just around the corner. And while the device is sure to make a splash when it’s finally released, the issue that keeps coming up whenever it’s talked about is the device’s lack of UMD support. Want to know who isn’t worried at all about this issue? Mega gaming retailer GameStop.

The retailer explained during a recent earnings call that it’s not fretting over the potential profit losses that could result from PSP Go owners being required to download games via the PlayStation Network as opposed to buying a physical UMD disc, Kotaku reports.

“We have a very clear roadmap as to how we can drive profitability on the sale of games,” said GameStop’s executive vice president of merchandising and marketing, Tony Bartel.

And the backbone of this plan is the same one that boosts the company’s profits year after year: trade-ins. In this case, GameStop is planning to generate significant profits from UMD trade-ins, with the other major contributors being the sales of pre-paid PSN cards and redeemable game codes. It certainly sounds like a winning combination, but it will be up to consumers to make it happen. (And by “consumers” I mean those gamers who either only make cash purchases, aren’t old enough to have a credit card, or enjoy the ambiance of their local GameStop so much that they couldn’t imagine not stopping in to pick up a game that they could just as easily download from home.)

Any PSP owners out there with tons of games planning to buy a PSP Go? Aren’t you just going to play your old games on your PSP and your new downloaded games on your PSP Go? Anyone think they’ll just trade in everything and start fresh with a PSP Go?
