During our GamesCom Lost Planet 2 interview with Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi, we slipped in a few Resident Evil questions. Considering his involvement with Resident Evil 5, we asked him a number of questions about that game as well. But when asked whether or not he would be involved in the development process for Resident Evil 6, we we’re quite taken back by his answer.
G4: Are you on the next Resident Evil title?
Jun Takeuchi: (laughs) There are probably three candidates and they’ve been playing blackjack for a long time to pick the role of producer for the next one. But they haven’t decided yet. They have me doing something else. Go, or something like that. Blackjack wasn’t working.
G4: So you don’t want to do another one?
Takeuchi: It’s a great project to work on, but it’s really, really hard.
While the blackjack game has been joked about in previous interviews, what’s interesting is that there’s three producers looking to fill the role. Who could be jockeying for the position? Kawata-san (Producer Resident Evil 5) has already said he’s probably not going to be doing it, so he’s out. Could Capcom be prepping Hiroyuki Kobayashi for another run at the series since it was Resident Evil 4 – the last Resident Evil title that he produced – the put Resident Evil back on the map? Considering he just came off of working on the CG Resident Evil movie, and has finished Devil May Cry 4 – he might be free. Or could Capcom be looking at an outside developer to continue to make the franchise even more westernized?
Our full interview with Jun Takeuchi will be posted on G4tv.com next week. Stay tuned.
