Xbox 360 owners may have to wait a bit longer than their PlayStation 3 counterparts before they get their hands on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV Online, however both consoles will be getting Final Fantasy XIII at the same time next year. Producer Yoshinori Kitase told VG247 during GamesCom that in addition to a simultaneous release, both versions of the game “should be pretty much equal, both in terms of content and the visuals as well.”
And yet, one area where the games will differ will be in the disc count. Kitase said that Square is “aiming for about three discs for the Xbox 360 version.” Given the scope and scale of the highly anticipated RPG, this is hardly surprising news, especially since previous titles such as Mistwalker's Blue Dragon have shipped on multiple discs as well. Similarly, id Software recently revealed that its post-apocalyptic FPS/racing game Rage will most likely ship on at least two discs for the 360, with three being a definite possibility.
Clearly, Sony’s prescient decision to include Blu-ray with the PS3 is proving even more so as time goes by. On the other hand, until Blu-ray manufacturing costs come down, it will still cost publishers just as much, if not less, to produce games on multiple DVDs as opposed to single Blu-ray discs. So unless Microsoft releases an Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray drive, don't expect this multi-disc trend to go away anytime soon.
Any thoughts on multi-disc console games? Do you mind having to swap out discs?

This doesn't bother me one bit. I don't plan on spending $300 or more for PS3 just to play this. I rather wait for the 360 version.

It doesnt matter how many disks it has! Did that stop people buying FF VII, VIII or IX?

even if it was 10 disks I would still play it. I for one enjoy a small break in the action. Helps to create a more dramatic exp. it creates anticipation of whats to come.

@Bonerjam I agree completely. Some people might have to put down the Ding Dongs, brush off the cookie crumbs, and get off their butts for 30 seconds! This might really be a problem for these "lazy mf'ers". lol.

I remember when you not only had to swap multiple 5 1/4" floppy discs but also had to sometimes flip those discs over during a game. A large number of Laserdisc movies had to be flipped at the midway point.
That aside, I would suspect that a number of these multi-disc games will allow users to install the full game to the hard drive. Funny, but I don't think anyone ever mentioned that possibility.

Come on now, almost 2010, who wants to have to switch out between 3 disks? PS3 got 360 beat in this department

I seem to remember reading that bluray was more durable than dvd, right? so what happens when the 360 scratches the multipayer disc of Rage?

Funny thing is it'll take the PS3 a year to load the game on the HD anyway so 360 owners will be able to switch disks and continue playing faster than PS3 owners

SE said they're "aiming" for 3 discs, meaning the current might be 4 or more. If I were SE, better not aim at all if they're serious on making it look on par with PS3 version.
I think the PS3 version will use the 50g. The demo is already 5g. They're gonna need all the space since it's gonna run on 1080p.

What every body has fail to mention. Fact DVDs scratch more then BRDs. Fact three DVDs will scratch more then 1 BRD in any given life cycle. I do no mind switching the disk but having one spot on one disk that is scratched blows chunks. My copy of FF7 disk two is scratched, have I played it much sense that happaned? Nope! Pisses me of when I have to reload a save to try and make it past the scratch.

I don't mind swapping discs. It is the most exercise I will probably get while playing these games. I love my xbox but I am thinking about getting a PS3 now that they are cheap. Maybe I will just get the large games like Rage for the PS3 if I am feeling super lazy.
