Now that the much rumored PS3 slim has been officially revealed, along with an all around price drop, people are wondering how this new console model will effect Sony's bottom line as well as the gaming industry. Such is the topic of this week's Soapbox. Adam takes some time out of his day to speculate about how he thinks the public will react to this new, seemingly more accessible machine and if it will bring Sony's sales numbers up to the level of the Xbox 360 or possibly even the Wii. 360 elite $399(maybe even cheaper in the future) = Netflix, (Zune instant on-demand), HDMI cable, headset, and more

There was definitely a strategy with the introduction of the PS3 Slim and the Price drop. With a bunch of cool exclusive games like uncharted 2 & Heavy Rain coming out soon. Ofcos we have to mention the god of all games, "god of War 3" hitting stores and ur mamas lap early next year. Good comments Sessler. I totally agree.

MS has got that plenty of issues with the article Gameinformer had about its failure rate and Sony dropping two bombs I can't wait to see what the the first quarter of 2010 brings

I really hope the competition between Sony and Microsoft picks up, but I don't mean the flame wars between the idiots who sit in these forums all day going back and forth at each other. I own both a 360 and ps3, and I love them both. Why I want the competition to start is because I think they'll be offering more and better stuff via downloads or extra game content. For example I'm going to buy Batman, I had to decided which console I was going to buy it on. I went with the ps3 because I wanted the pre-order special from game stop to play as the Joker, then from the 360 version with the scarecrow challenge. I don't know if microsoft and sony have anything to do with pre order specials or what store can do it. I think if the console wars start to heat up between the two companies, and not just the fanboys we'll see a lot of better games and more incentives for us to buy their product.

I always knew I would purchase a PS3; the exclusives are too good to pass up. Like others, this has pushed me over the edge. I can see myself with a PS3 by the end of '09. First purchases: The Ratchet & Clank games. I've missed them so! Plus, something about the prospect of playing FFXIII on an Xbox seemed wrong. But as for BluRay, I'm one of those without a HD TV. For me, this will be used as a gaming console only for a while. I'm happy :)

I am so excited about this. First to the Playstation fans who said that this would never happen.....never just happened. There were rumors after rumors and ps3 fans kept saying suck it up, sell blood, get a paper route, harvest your internal organs it's worth it. $399 is not that much; it will never come down. This makes so much sense to lower the price. They have a great line-up of games and now people will actually take a serious look at what this machine can offer. I know that everyone I talked to said they would get one once it drops to $299. God of War 3 should move several million units on it's own. Sony may loose money in the beginning but in the end they will clean up. At $399 it just won't move beyond the loyal fans who already have one and that's not a good business model. It has to appeal to the masses. Oh and by the way I'm a Microsoft fan and I will be picking this up. Can we please stop with the fan boy stuff and just enjoy the games on whatever system we have. we don't need negative comments at all just enjoy this medium and exist peaceably. Now let the negative comments begin!

y is no 1 talking about mag if that stuff works itl b crazy like the ferst time u picked up battle field . i have all cons and a top end pc and other then cod m2 mag is the game im looking forward to the most. assuming it works i like its saposta (256 shooters 1 map persint world NO LAG well little lag ) it culd sell a lot of ps3s. alot of ppl wood love 2 fill that masive battle

Hey guys, just to let you know. The Xbox 360 Elite is being cut to 299 within 2 weeks. I saw an early walmart ad at my job that comes out in less than 2 weeks and it has the price cut listed at 299.
So, there you have it, 360 elites price at 299 too. Man this war is getting crazy...................

I retract my last statement about wanting a PS3, i just read an article on Fudzilla stating that the new slim PS3 wil not have ANY PS2 backwards compatibility. So with that little bit of information, the PS3 still sucks.
Then again, the same site also has a RETARDED story about the 360 failure rate being 54 percent, so who knows.

Not sure how well Rock Band Beatles will do, isn't the virtual band genre beat into the ground by now? Maybe there will be a surge of purchases by that untapped demographic you were talking about, but it doesn't seem likely to me.
The price drop was LONG overdue, of course of course. I've got to say though, lack of backwards compatibility sucks. Maybe it really was a deal breaker in making a cheaper system, but it's a shame. Does it ruin the system? No. But it certainly lessens it. I don't know. The subjects already been debated to death so I'll just leave it at that.
Also, I own one of the old 60 g models (with BC) and now I'm worried I won't be able to get it fixed/replaced if something goes wrong. Already had to send it back once for repair.
