Sony announced a lot of exciting things at its GamesCom 2009 press conference yesterday, but here's something you might have missed: In Australia, PlayStation 3 owners will soon be able to watch the Australian Broadcast Company's programs through their consoles.
The trial begins later this year, and offers "catch-up TV," through ABC iView via the PlayStation Network.
ABC’s Director of Television, Kim Dalton, says the trial is just the beginning of iABC's plan to bring its shows to bigger audiences. "Today’s gaming consoles, televisions and DVD players all have internet capability and we’re excited to be able to team up with Sony PlayStation, as the first step in integrating ABC TV content into new online platforms and technologies.”
The agreement between Sony and ABC is non-exclusive, so Australians will most likely get ABC programming on other platforms as well. Whether ABC USA or other channels are working on a similar deals in the US remains to be seen, but an important hurdle must be overcome before importing programs from Australia: All the pictures are upside down there. Also, a dingo ate my baby.
