Internet blogger types are a persistent lot when it comes to figuring out what console a video game company has coming. While the word of Sony's PS3 Slim leaked months before yesterday's official announcement at GamesCom 2009, it wasn't for lack of trying on Sony's part. In order to throw laptop detectives off the trail, Sony filed the PlayStation 3 Slim's application with the FCC under the name of a dummy company: Sand Dollar Enterprises Inc.
Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc. filed an application for a "Computer Entertainment System," and it passed right under the noses of people who scour the FCC's public filings for info. Nice job Sony. But now that the Sand Dollar cat is out of the bag, some juicy info was revealed: Sand Dollar's application includes a second version of the PlayStation 3 Slim, one with a bigger hard-drive. PS3 Slim bigger brother will reportedly sport a spacious 250GB drive.
As for when/if the new version will be released, no one can say, but the conventional wisdom suggests it will be a holiday thing... so, you could wait to pick up a Slim, on the chance that a better version is incoming by Christmas. Or you could wait for the PlayStation 4 to hit the market in several years. It's your life.
