At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

I'll still buy most of my games for my Xbox 360 because that's where my friends are...but now I can have those Sony exclusives. I already have a Blu Ray player but I guess I'll have one for the dorm.

Jesus.....now I'm tempted to trade in the PS3 I have now for credit towards the Slim. Granted, I'll pop the original 80GB HD back into the system but still.

eh. i don't trust the PS3 slim. the PS2 slim was a mistake and until i hear other wise I'm calling this a fail to so I'm just gonna get a regular PS3 unless if i hear the PS3 slim has the exact same hardware and runs better. so until then Sony, good luck.
lol. that's cute. the ps3 fans think this this makes the PS3 even better. like i said though. the PS2 was horrible and if Sony hasn't learned anything from it this one will be the same. and to all of you that think that free online is better. it's not. because then they don't have to do as much maintenance as if you paid for it. if your pay for it their saying how much better it is than as if it was free. and plus I've played online games on the PS3 and their not as good as they are on on the 360. One last thing is that one of the best games ever, Fallout 3, is horrible on the PS3 because of all the glitches and lag you get from it. So deuces up.

It's about time. I'm more likely to get one now but I still don't like the hours to wait for updates to the minutes for my Xbox360. I'm still ok w/ having my PS2 for now, specially with no compatibility.

Playstation owners are retarded. How can you support buying a PS3 that STILL ISN T BACKWARDS COMPATABLE? Sony makes great games and I want to play them as much as anybody else, but leaving out backwards compatibility is just plain stupid and I won t buy one until it plays all the games. I refuse to pay for 2 separate systems and have more clutter surrounding my TV just to play all the games in the Playstation library. Sony is cutting corners and short-changing customers by introducing more sub-standard products and you fanboys are just handing over fists full of your cash covered in your own droll and for what? A smaller case? Get a clue. And it might not be quite as infuriating if it wasn t for the fact that SOME of the PS3s ARE backwards compatible and some aren t. What the hell is up with that nonsense? I don t have time to rant about how 3 consoles in to the ring with Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony is still pushing out those same old crappy PS1 controllers built for tiny Japanese hands (or possibly leprechauns), but for these reasons I ve refrained from buying any Sony product and will maintain my boycott until they start doing things right and build a quality product.

For the record its about time, sadly though Sony still needs to put BC back into the systems to make it worth a damn. Can't keep 60 gig models in but 80's... all day long. I give em a 50% score for potential, and a 0% for keeping a secret from anyone.
