At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

WoW!!!!its finally become a reality $299 for a 120gb PS3 slim.....even tho i already have a PS3.....its such a good deal that ill probably get this.....now theres really no excuse for anyone whos wanted a PS3 to not have one.....SUPER EXCITED :)

Meh, I just got a 360. Next I'm getting a PS2 (I'm a final fantasy fangirl... lemme alone)... It'll be a bit before I get a ps3slim. Besides, I need something more than just "Little Big Planet" to lure me in.

I know it sucks for people who just bought a PS3 to see price drops and new hardware, but the reality is that this always happens. It happened to me when I got my 360 and the Elite came out a few short months later. It happened to a large amount of iPhone buyers who lost out when they dropped the price, and now it's happening with PS3. It's just the nature of the tech market. Hell, my PC was obsolete 3 months after I bought it, but there's nothing you can do about it. It is what it is.

lets hope sony doesnt,dreamcast the ps3 slim ,and go belly up.they still havent made there money back on the 20gb ps3.yet,but its sony.the 10 yr old ps2 is selling more systems then its big brother.i guess we will see in 2010 how the ps3 slim.does, after x-mas and income tax time ???

O M G!!!!!!!!!!!!!! besides no backwards compatibility :( the slim seems to finally fix all the apperance problems of the ps3. (and less wieght helps to)
