At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

I'm so tempted on this one since the NEWS breaks out.
Even though i already purchased an 80GB version(white) back
in March 2008.
BUT one eyebrow is still raise on this.
$299 is price tag is really a great move by SONY .....BUT i hope
they are being HONEST as well... because i can't hardly imagine
that "they are NOT giving uP on something on this model".. not to mention that
this model runs on 45nm technology. (so they 'might' save cost on some parts one way or another)
I'll past three to four months more and see how those "MUST HAVE guys" would
comment about. (bugs and glitches etc.)
If ALL goes well and SONY really lives to its promise that we are getting the
same feature, functions and 'hardware quality'. Consider it done!

dude i know the PS3 slim and PS3 both have Blu-Ray but are now the price of one of the best blu-ray players. And yeah IM GETTING ONE!! and modding it to look like a 360! Biznatch

Just bought an HP with a Blue Ray. Would've bought one otherwise. With FF13 and MGS4 coming to the XBOX360 eventually....I'll wait for the next gen systems before buying another system....Nevertheless...BRAVO Sony!

Its kind of ugle and plain, i'll keep my fat PS3. No backward compatibilty? Is Sony just deaf and dumb? I hope the rumouris true about an update that makes ALL PS3s able to play PS2 games. The big news wil be when the 360 can be bought at a cheap $250.00 or even $199.00......eat your heart out Nintendo.

i love the new style, never had enough money for the ps3 but now i can get one and SLIM too and with MAG, UNCHARTED 2:AMONG THIEVES, and Gran Turismo 5 coming out the PS3 will sell like hotcakes :)

NO, why doesn't anyone see that this is just another ploy for people to shell out more money, I have the original and its just fine for me and I still have backwards compatability. Open your eyes people and stop buying everything they put out, wait and mabey Sony will come out with something acutally worth spending our money on instead of a downsized version of a already great machine!

Hmm... looks kinda cheap to me. The origional PS3 had a really nice finish to it and this just looks kinda blah.

it is avaluble for preorder right now at gamestop.com, there are no hardware drawbacks of any kind that we know of, the exact release date is september 1st, there is absolutely NO backwards compatibility, and I have heard from a a one or two of my sources that sony MIGHT be discontinuing the 80 gig, although it's not a very realiable sorce, did that answer everyones questions?

you know for the people who are complaining about the backwards compatibility for the ps3 i dont see why you complain. since i bought my ps3 i haven't played a single ps2 game at all. and even if i wanted to i have a ps2 so no biggie. now with the price drop people should have no reason to not buy a ps3.

If it's not backwards compatible and has a smaller footprint I'll just spring for the full-sized limited version I've seen on Gamestop.com. I'll wait until a full spec-sheet is released.

If you own an Xbox 360 and have never had a hardware failure, you're a very fortunate individual, according to new figures from top print magazine Game Informer. Their latest issue polled over 5,000 console owners, and determined that the Xbox 360 boasts a failure rate of over 54%, compared with about 10% for the PS3 and 6.8% for the Wii.

its seems to me like the xbox fanboys that were hating on the ps3 earlier are like "cool, now i can get one and play all the awesome exclusives"
which tells me that before when they were saying "ps3 sucks", they were really saying, "i actually want a ps3 and now im jealous so now im just gonna hate"

I would want to make sure it is backwards compatible before forking out my hard earned cash, but it looks tempting and kind of like a hybrid of the ps2 and ps3 design.
