At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

Sony is stupid. There only removing all the good things like the backwards compatability,chrome and everything else to make it cheaper just so they can sell it quick and catch Microsoft in sales. Damn Sony doesnt care about their fans they care about profit and being ahead of Microsoft. I say thats a bad idea. Ill wait for the Ps4 to come out and ill buy that.

I won't be getting one. Not right away at least. I've already got a PS3 160GB so I'm all set. Maybe for my bedroom later or something I guess.

I have a 360 but since this is coming the i gues I'll have a 360 and a PS3 (: there both great (in my opinion) but I still think I'll play mor 360 until a good game comes out for PS3 not that there are but there are greater coming out (:

I am DEFINITELY getting a system now....though I'd rather sacrifice the drive space for the backwards compatibility. It's worth it to me. What's Sony without it's entire game library?

i have a 40 gb ps3 and i've been thinking of geting a other ps3 and this announcement may push me even farther to go get a other ... but i still don't know enough about this new slim to get.... like how many usb ports does it hsve? and does it have a wi-fi? more detail most be release for them to really to the microsoft and wii nations. The price will get a people to buy cause of the gaming and blue-ray. but like everthing eles whats the catch? are there bugs to be expected?

i will buy this new version, i don't care about backwards or linux compatibility, i was saving money to buy the 80Gb, the price was good for me but the new price of slim version is better because the HD is 120Gb! i just didn't like the new design, i prefer the fat version and the touchpad buttons

I'm so tempted on this one since the NEWS breaks out.
Even though i already purchased an 80GB version(white) back
in March 2008.
BUT one eyebrow is still raise on this.
$299 price tag is really a great move by SONY .....BUT i hope
they are being HONEST as well... because i can't hardly imagine
that "they are NOT giving uP on something on this model".. not to mention that
this model runs on CELL Processor with 45nm technology. (so they 'might' save cost on some parts one way or another)
I'll past three to four months more and see how those "MUST HAVE guys" would
comment about. (bugs and glitches etc.)
If ALL goes well and SONY really lives to its promise that we are getting the
same feature, functions and 'hardware quality'. Consider it done!
(getting another one for Home theater only or in vice versa) ;-) -sweeeT

I'll get around to it eventually. I got an xbox 360 and wii and am perfectly happy with the titles i currently have. There is no real reason to purchase the ps3 if you already have a xbox 360 and wii. Not that i couldn't afford a ps3 in the first place. it's just poor marketing on Sony's part. benig so arrogant and not studying the market simply because ohhh it's sony. dont' get me wrong i brought a sony ps2 a long while after it came out. It just didnt' appeal to me enough to wanna go ahead and make the purchase. For all those people who just gotta go and get a ps3 now unless you got it like that need to wait. Get outta your parents basement and stop writing your name on the OJ and if this offends you you really need to be worried.
