At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

ok so i already have a ps3 i got at the start of summer so this makes me sad to see i got mine at the wrong time i paid $519 for it and now the *new* ps3 slim comes out and its only $299 :( i got mine cuz it had a 160 Gb hardrive and i am not impressed with no backward thing i never had a ps2 but i wish i did there are alot of fun games i wish i could get i really dont think i ll be getting the ps3 slim cuz mine has a bigger hardrive if the slim was backward compatible i think i would buy but its not so i ll have to stick with my ps3

I would honestly buy another PS3 before buying a 360. Sure you can get a 360 for only 200 bucks where the new PS3 is a whopping 300 dollars! but.. once you figure in the cheapest blu ray player (99.99) at wal-mart.. or the wireless adapter (50+) or the monthly fee for online. You're already behind and you have yet to get a 120 gig hard drive.

im not getting on it looks cheap i like my big one its big and shiny and looks like i spent 400 dollars on it and thats the way i like it. and for that matter i might sell mine and go get the original black and chrome one with BC and 4 usbs

This is the best thing sony could have done. Their system is now the best deal on the market, and no one should be complaining about this announcement. This is what we have all been asking for and now it is here and even better than we thought. I can't wait to see next month's NPD's

this is so exciting i have the original ps3 and im hoping to get the slim this is not such a big deal because its like the ps3 but smaller and lighter the psp go is more exciting but overall im happy pleese inform me back

Im getting one, no doubt about it. im seriously thinking about selling this 360. Its been frustrating to say the least. The only thing that ever stoped me from getting a PS3 was the price, I wanted one from the beginning. If someones looking to buy an xbox360 reply to this. Lol. No more racial slurs from ignorant COD4 users on Xboxlive for me. Good times on the way
