At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the PlayStation 3 Slim. The new model will be available in stores starting the first week of September 2009. It is roughly 1/3 smaller and lighter than the current PS3 (and uses 1/3 less power! Gcycle!!!). The Slim will come with a 120GB hard drive. Sadly, backwards compatibility will not be a part of the PlayStation 3 slim, as well. However, most importantly, it will be the cheapest PS3 to date, with a price of $299 USD. The lower price will also apply to all 80GB models still available.
What do you think of Sony's announcement? Will the price cut and new model be enough for the company to close the gap (in North America) with Microsoft? Will any of you be getting one? I want to see it up close and get details on backwards compatibility, but I'm quite tempted.

I'm a long time fan of xbox 360. I don't have a ps3 so I will be getting this ps3 slim for sure, for two reasons; Heavy Rain and God of War 3.

I might get one just so I can play Final Fantasy VII off the PSN and to replace my older Blu Ray player. Don't care for anything else. I got my 360 for that. And don't hate on that, have some respect.

Sick - paid $499 two years ago 80G, Motorstorm, B/C, extra ports. I still think it was worth every penny, $299.00 is great deal.
Those new to PS3 must get:
MGS4 as your fist game, you will love it.
Wonder if this means PS2 is going to still be on the shelves?

Sucks that there is no BC but that's a pretty sweet deal none the less. I wonder if I'll get a Slim if my PS3 can't be brought back to life in the shop, then I won't have my limited BC even but oh well.

Dude wut games do u play that are better than ps3 games. ive played all of my friends x box games and yeah their cool but when i get those exclusive games on my pc the grafix are superbly better and my video card only cost me 90 bucks. just wait n see all the jelousy youll feel when the 25 exclusive titles come out for the 3. wut u said is like saying the we is better. the ps3 is a classier and superior system ANY way you look at it.make me a list of wut is better about the Xsux. ooohh twiter n netflix. come on dude it only took 4 YEARS to get that crap. mthah!

well, i estimate within the next 5-8 months Sony will possibly pass Microsoft in Sales. Also that Microsoft will etheir come out with a Price Drop to compete with this(which wont do well seeing how every 3/5 households owns either a 360 or Wii)or come out with a new system(Xbox 180 maybe i've been waiting for that handheld) possibly a 360 Slim, or whatever just something new and shiney that will make people buy it.
Lastly i mark this day as the day the 360 dies in Asia seeing how there the Ps3 already reigns over the 360 this will kill it..But the 360 fanboys should be happy that means more time for Microsoft to focus on you and more "funding" to fix RRoD..

Even as a working man like me buying the very first ps3 I thought the price was like sky high 600bucks? But I'm glad ps3 has drop now all my friends can get there hands on it. It's hard to come up with 300cash but even harder to come up with 600bucks to blow! I can't wait to setup a ps3 lan now :) Great news G4!!! Best news ever! I hope Tokyo news would be mind blowing too cant wait for what lies ahead!

Finally maybe now we might see an end to the war between the Xbots and the PS3 fanboys!! I'm mad at myself for not seeing this coming!! They did it with the first playstation and then again with the PS2!! They always come out with the first edition, which is normally really big and bulky yet powerful. Then after a few years they'll drop the price for the release of their more slimmer version!! Which also makes sony brillant with their strategy!! They know they true die-hard PS fans will buy the new system regardless of price, and then for those who want one but not bad enough to pay upwards of 600 bucks for their system, will be able to buy one once all of the fanboys get their fix first!!
