As you are probably well aware, the Germany-based trade show GamesCom is next week, and while there’s sure to be tons of news coming out of the show, the thing I’m probably most excited about is finally being able to stop speculating about the existence of Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim. All signs point to at least an announcement regarding the elusive console, which means no more posts about blurry camera-phone pics or grainy, unconfirmed shots from random factories. It’s going to be great. Sadly though, this will all have to wait until Sony’s press conference next week.
See, several retailers in Japan are experiencing a rather bizarre PS3 shortage at the moment, as Kotaku reports. It isn’t clear exactly how many stores have run out of consoles, but evidently it’s happened to enough to raise a few eyebrows. It’s also worth noting that last week, a note was leaked from a 7-11 in Japan that indicated that the 80GB PS3 was to be discontinued as of August 9th, suggesting perhaps a little cleaning house on Sony’s part, most likely in preparation for the PS3 Slim launch rumored to be happening soon.
So there you go, a little last minute PS3 Slim speculation to remind you what you'll be missing out on once Sony (hopefully) puts this whole thing to rest in Germany next week.
Anyone here going to miss speculating about the PS3 Slim? I mean, it's going to be like losing a family member who you hate and wish never existed, no?

The PS3 is the only HD system of choice in Japan...so yeah, that might be one of the reasons why there might be a shortage.
BTW, unless Sony announces a PS3 Slim...don't get your hopes up.

I suppose the only question that really needs answered is; will it be slimmer and MORE capable, or cheaper and and LESS capable?

The whole thing is lacking in importance. Slim no Slim, price drop no price drop. Whatever. I'm quite happy with my PS3 and never had any reason not to be. If something did happen to it I'd either send it in for repair or buy another one. What's the big deal?

Meh I'm happy with my $500 160gig PS3 but a slim couldn't hurt since I rather have another ps3 than a 360.

youtube has more PS3 slim videos, not the crappy one we all saw before, the new one seem to be very legit, personally I don't care though, my 80 gig works great, and having 4 usb port along with the memory card slots is something I don't want to give up yet

I hope they don't discontinue the PS3 80GB. Sony already doesn't have that many PS3 sales as it is, and to leave the most expensive PS3 (160GB) on the market isn't gona help any, and the 40GB sucks, IMO, no expansion slots, nor backwards compatibility. At least the 80GB can have back-compat.
As for the PS3 Slim, i hope it doesn't lack anything that the PS3 already has (i.e. expansion slots, and if you download the PS2 system data from PSN that it can have back-compat)

i'm still waiting to buy a ps3. it's too expensive for me at the moment considering the few games i want to play on it. also, still waiting to hear about KH3 and if it's exclusive to the ps3 before i go buy one. slimming it down and a price drop couldnt hurt. and what about that possible update to make the console backwards compatible?

OH MY GOD THANK GOODNESS G4 FINALLY GOT RID OF THAT STUPID NORTON ADVERTISEMENT!!!!!!!! It was bright yellow and two crappy things were paired together (Norton and GI Joe movie)
ON TOPIC: I can't wait for a PS3 slim, I've been wanting a PS3 since launch but the price was a huge setback.
Here's to a cheaper, smaller, better PS3!
