MAG Pushed Back Until January, Beta Test News Promised Soon

There were rumblings Zipper's ambitious 256-player online shooter MAG would be missing its previously announced fall 2009 shipping date and Sony has confirmed these suspicions. MAG is now confirmed for January 26 of next year.

Additionally, information on the impending MAG public beta should be coming soon. Surveys to become eligible for the beta have been circulating amongst PlayStation 3 owners recently, suggesting the beta would be going live in the near future.

If you're at PAX, though, you can sign up to be part of a hands-on session with MAG over at the PlayStation Blog. There's only 200 slots, so hurry up!

    The MAG public beta shall be starting September 17th for Qore subscribers and some GAP members, and some lucky people will get invited to the beta. A more private beta (technically it's not closed, or as defined by Zipper and Sony as closed) has been going on for around 2 weeks now? Somewhere along that line. Here's a link to prove it: (copy and paste)

    Isn't MAG a first party game though? I thought Sony was developing it. But as for leadership, first you have to play a while as a squad member before you can become a squad leader. Then, you have to win a certain amount of games as a squad leader before you can become a platoon leader. Then, to become the OIC (officer in charge) you have to win a certain number of games as a platoon leader. So the only way an 8 or 12 year is going to be in a leadership position is if he either earned it, or is playing on someone else's account. So I don't think there's going to be too many problems.

    @360_Mafia_Godfather, l33t360, and ProjectX13

    Well, isn't it the same for you idiots? I mean some of you 360 fanboys are quick to judge 3rd-party PS3 exclusives, and when they go to the 360 you suddenly change your mind and say "Yes, I love this game" when you were bashing it months before. Case in point: MGS: Rising. If I do recall, 360 fanboys called MGS4 a "cutscene", but then when Rising was announced they were so excited, and couldn't wait. I agree with you that PS3 fanboys are only NOW changing what they said before when time and time again I saw them post comments about the year of 09: MAG, Uncharted 2, etc.

    However, it's the same for you guys too. But yeah, I do enjoy watching fanboys change their opinions over time. It's hilarious.

    However, I do agree that just because it's 256 players doesn't mean it's going to be good. I think Zipper got it right though.

    I think this game is going to kick ass. With all the different objectives, I think Zipper made it so that you wouldn't be trying to hunt for people to kill. If you're assaulting a base, chances are someone is defending it.

    Here's to hoping I get into the beta to "test" the community. And when Patrick said "shipping", does that mean it's going to be disc-based? That would kick ass. There's no way I'm paying a fee.

    I'm still skeptical about the faction/squad/platoon leader thing. I mean, if your leader is a complete douche, do you get to overthrow them? Could you imagine your faction/squad/platoon being run by an 8-year-old? A manic depressive? How does this work? The thing with "higher rank" doesn't seem to work that well when you think about it.

    Well, Bad Company isn't a good example, I had plenty of fun but it doesn't even have the same squad structure, let alone server architecture or the big thing, game play. But people who know what the game is going to do ( that means they've heard more then 256 multiplayer in previews) are more excited for game play. I mean really, what other games do you see that will allow you to move around 63 other people because you repaired or destroyed one thing? And that one thing will also affect another 192 other people?

    @synicvance

    actually resistance 2 has more players online than killzone 2 and they made those 60 player matches work great!

    on topic im glad that the game was pushed back so that the devs have ample time to fix any issues its having so that we can get a great game once its released

    Between Killzone and Battlefield Bad Company, the two games with the most multiplayer players at a time, I don't think merely having a bunch of people playing makes the experience fun. At the end of the day it's about making good gameplay that is balanced and if that was easy we would see way more successful FPSs. You can count the good multiplayer FPSs on one hand, and I think you'd lose count if you counted all the bad multiplayer FPSs. To assume this game is gonna be good just because there will be 256 people playing at a time is faulty logic.

    I love how the PS3 fanboys were claiming this was going to be another "AAA" title for 09 and now that its gotten "pushed back" ;) they act like they knew it was coming out in 2010 all along. Classic PS3 fanboy stroytelling!

    I hope they make sure the game is flawless. Especially their servers. Nothing worse than having an amazing online multiplayer and not being able to have a good time because of lag.

    Jesus I may be too busy playing Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2.

    I think I'll wait a couple of days after MAG comes out to see if it's all fixed up. Other than that, I'm really excited for this breakthrough game.

    I think this is a good idea because no1 wants people going under ground or glitching like in cod. And plus now i could get it for my birthday :D

    It was probably bound to happen, but, oh well. At least it's good to know that they care about the game's quality, and not just trying to send it out ASAP.

    now back on topic, i was hoping and praying they would push this back because i really wanted to beta test this first. Because with si many Sony fanboy's already doubting this, if they would of released it this year, hardly no one would touch it.

    and it was announced it was coming in september this year if im correct i think i read that in a Game Informer.

    This is a weird situation as it seems every developer is pushing their games back so they can get the right attention it deserves, but now it seems too many developers are doing it and now, next year will also be packed and taking a toll on my wallet(Splinter Cell Conviction, GOW3, MAG, The Last Guardian, Bioshock 2 and more) which leads me to suspect that some games might get pushed back even further(possibly 2011). Not to mention next years E3 so who knows what other AAA titles will be released to compete with these other titles (*sigh*) SO MANY GAMES!!!
