At The Azenberg Group's [A] List Summit, vice president of strategy and client services Steve Fowler took some time to chat with me about his days at Microsoft. Serving as lead product manager from 2000 to 2003, Fowler was responsible for the brand management of numerous action games, including a little title called Halo. The word on the street was that Fowler was largely responsible for the game's tagline, "Combat Evolved". When asked about its origins, he told me:
"Back in the original days of the Halo brand, before it was anything, we did a lot of consumer research. We went across the world, talking to consumers in Europe, Asia, and North America. We were concerned with gamers that weren't aware of what Halo was and we needed to be concerned with them because if this was going to be a franchise title then we couldn't just rely on core gamers or people that were following it since the MacWorld announcement. The new customers were going to be the ones that would make or break the Xbox, so we need Halo to go bigger than that.
The emotional response to the word halo was not exactly what we were looking for. [laughs] It seems trivial now because it's such an established brand and it's synonymous now with unbelievable sci-fi action. Back in the day, halo was seen as a feminine word and had religious connotations to it, so we felt like we needed a definer. 'Combat Evolved' was what ended up being that definer. [laughs]
There was a lot of back and forth between Bungie, the internal Microsoft marketing team, and the outsourced creative agency. There was a lot of debate, a lot of nail biting, a lot of screaming at each other [laughs], and lots of compromise. It was the single piece of content that defined the Xbox. At that time it was the next-gen system, so we were evolving combat. First-person shooters on consoles were never really that popular outside of GoldenEye 007, so Halo was a big risk. It was a bold statement that said, 'Hey, this is a shooter that was meant to be played best on a console with a gamepad in your hand.'"
When I asked Fowler if he was the one that coined the phrase, he shared credit with his team. He also told me that a lot of people at Microsoft weren't keen on Master Chief representing the Xbox and would have preferred a certain Oddworld Inhabitant.
"Well, I think I had the most responsibility for the phrase, but it certainly wasn't done in a vacuum. There was a lot riding on Halo back then. There were a bunch of naysayers that didn't believe in leading with a first-person shooter as basically your mascot for a console launch. It had never been done before. There were people internally at Microsoft that felt that Oddworld should have gotten the bigger budget and should have gotten the bigger push, because Munch would have made a better console-launch mascot. They asked, 'How can this big green guy with no face and no voice represent our box?' In retrospect, it was perfect [laughs]. Microsoft is this giant green machine that doesn't talk to anybody, so it made exact sense!"
Can you imagine how different the Xbox would have been if Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee was its leading title? I'm not the biggest Halo fan around, but it's easy to see that it's an enormously successful franchise that really helped define the Xbox and Xbox 360. I understand why Munch would have been the choice for traditionalists that wanted the Xbox to have its Mario or Sonic and it's easy to say this looking through a retroscope, but I can't imagine Halo not leading the Xbox. Combat evolved indeed!
What do you think of the origins of the phrase "Combat Evolved"? Do you think the Xbox would have been as successful if it was led by Munch instead of Master Chief?

I grew up on halo. I may have started my gaming career in 96-97 with FFVII but really my life has been enhanced and centered with halo. I started playing in 01' when I was ten and its just become a part of me, I'm a fan boy through and through. Thank god for halo and the box that came with it.

If you think about it halo is very original back in 2001 it had a pretty good story and alot of good design choices and halo 2 was a good enough game(except for the ending) it could have been a big budget movie it was amazing and then came halo 3not the most amazing game ever but 2yrs after it came out its still going strong
sinnquest

I can't imagine the Xbox NOT having the Chief as it's mascot. At the time it came out, it was revolutionary (not saying the Halo Titles out now aren't).Like he said, The Giant Hulking green beast that is the Chief represents the Green and Black box Perfectly.
Besides, Sure as hell beats a plumber and blue hedgehog.

It's funny. After living abroad for some time after college, I came home and my friend showed me his new XBOX and Halo with great excitement. I didn't think much of it.But later,I traveled to Taiwan and I bought a rack of games. Mostly played Need 4 Speed and Marvel v Capcom 2, and Metal Gear. I bought Halo and never played it. After a year I returned back to the States, and after a long day of work, I put in HALO at about midnight and played the campaign until 3 am. I couldn't out it down. I love sci fi, the story was engaging. Can't imagine XBOX or Microsoft without it.

Good stuff here. I have excelled at COD 4 and enjoy it's multiplayer tremendously. It's true, if you see the person first (like in real life) you will get the kill. Also, victory goes to that person who knows the map and how to booby trap and choose the appropriate loadout. However, I once saw a gamer who continuously used a sniper on all maps and constantly took 1st place. he was sniping at point blank range and I swear he couldn't have been using an aimbot on the 360. Halo requires different skill. It's multiplayer mechanics are different from COD4. Success at one is not transferrable to the other automatically. COD4 is fast paced and relentless. HALO builds with anticipation as the screen scrolls menacingly, there are less sound effects for movement and a well place jump to form an elevated attack and melee will end you. Both games are marvelous.

GOd, I love Oddworld, I still own my copy of Munhc's Oddysey and play it regularly

If Munch was leading the way for the xbox, I think there would be a realistic possibility there would be no Xbox 360. The game was alright, but it was nowhere near console defining. Microsoft received a HUGE break and just got really, really lucky. And who knows where I'd be, for that matter? Probably still playing SSX tricky on my Playstation 2. Ironically, I first got Halo not for it's name, but because it was made by Bungie. I think I'm one of the few who knew of Bungie before Halo. That's what happens when you grow up with a Mac

Halo was amazing. I was never really into shooters until that game. (Considering I was never really a hardcore gamer until that game.) Halo: Combat Evolved was the main title that REALLY got me into gaming. Ever since then I've been a gamernerd. Proud of it too. I hated Oddworld, it wasn't very fun to me. I still play Halo: CE til this day. Every Halo game has it's own pros and cons. It's good to go back and play all of them.

pretty much halo saved the xbox

Bungie and Halo kept microsoft in the gaming market. Without Halo we wouldn't even be playing a Xbox 360. Xbox would of the went the way of the CDI, 3do, Jaguar,etc...

On a side note some nerdy math guys wrote a paper detailing how a zombie apocalypse would affect us the story is here

Halo is the reason I got an xbox 360 :] I still remember saving up my lunch money just to buy my 360 and halo 3. Ohhh man I still get goosebumps just thinking about the moment Halo 3 came out, the whole world was going crazy!!!!!!!!!! I personally think that halo3 delivered in all it's promises both in single player and multiplayer. And still dominates everyone in the mulitiplayer scene ^_^.

It's hard to say, because you never really known what could have happened if the Xbox had a different mascot. I do honestly believe however that without Halo, Microsoft would have had a tougher time pushing the console and not as much developers would have seen the potential in the Xbox. With Halo, Xbox become synonymous with first-person shooters and FPS became one of the most popular games for consoles. I suppose it's just impossible for me to imagine a gaming world without Halo and what would of become of the Xbox if Halo was supporting it. I can tell you I think it would have taken much longer for FPS to become popular on consoles, without Halo.
