You'd think designing a video game would be somewhat of a linear experience. The first thing you build is the first level…right? Not with Rage.
id Software technical director John Carmack pulled back the veil on the long-in-development shooter Rage during his QuakeCon keynote in Texas today and revealed id Software has yet to even build the first level for Rage because the company is trying something new with Rage.
According to Carmack, the concept behind building the first level last is giving the game a chance to breathe. If the rest of Rage has been designed it means id Software can take the lessons from the rest of Rage and make players' first entry into the Rage world the best experience possible.
That actually sounds pretty smart.

What would possibly make you think you'd build a video game linearly? That'd be like thinking movies have to be shot in order.

good idea you need to hook people at the start

It is a smart thing to do I hope it pays off. The introduction is one of the most important parts of a game just like a letter you write has a greeting, a middle (the body or important info) and an end or closing bringing things together

Yeah... if you're doing it right, the first level is one of the last you build, if not the last.
The first level is the most important, because it teaches the player how to play the rest of the game. But obviously you can't teach them about something that isn't done yet - if your mechanics change, you have to redo the first level, if you did it first.
Furthermore, the first level needs to be the most polished, and the team is most familiar with the tools and systems at the end of the project, which allows them to make a more polished level.

I believe John Williams says he usually scores the end of a movie first, so that he can craft a score that builds to that moment.

its smart until you get to the end of the game and its complete shiz =]

I agree with badgarok the opening might be great and make me want to continue the game, but at the same time by the middle of the game I might just want to throw my controller at the screen.

most developers make the first level last....

only problem, since some games that have mediocre startings have great endings. If this game has a great start that took lessons from the other levels, does that mean that the ending will be mediocre or bad? I'm all for a great start, but not if that means a bad ending

Intriguing, but I think whatever ever works best with id Software, works for me. If they think this is best process to make there game, then who are we to question them.
