Halo 2 is the reason you can't have more than 100 friends on Xbox Live, I reported earlier this week. Technically, it's because the old Xbox Live tech, which Halo 2 runs on, can't support more than 100 friends, but Halo 2 remains the only viable community preventing Microsoft from shutting down the previous XBL. Microsoft has since issued an official response to my story that provides little clarity.
"As the Xbox LIVE community continues to grow, we understand that some members may have reached the friends list cap," said a Microsoft spokesperson in an e-mailed statement. "We’re always listening to user feedback and looking at new ways to enhance the service, and expanding the friends limit is something we’re investigating. Beyond that we don’t have any details to share."
Microsoft's official response isn't much different than what various Microsoft representatives have been telling the press the past few years. The company is aware of the problem, the company is investigating the problem, the company has no timetable for a solution to the problem. We get it.
But as stated in my original piece, you have the power to help Microsoft make the switch. You just need to decide whether Halo 2's multiplayer lives or dies.

I have a 100 friends constantly and I feel that yeah they need to increase the cap because yeah I might not talk too all of my friends everyday, but it's good to have a friend that you might have made that talks to you every other month or so who isn't online all the time. I have had to make difficult decisions between well "This has been my best bud since Halo 2, but now he is kind of off and on every couple of months and the new people who I have just met who seem like we could be very good friends if I had any spaces left. " 100 friends over X-box live is way to restricting. It is a lot but trust me is isn't no where near enough. I would like to have 500 but that is just for personal reasons. Clan, Tournaments, game nights..etc etc but I think if they increased it too maybe 300+ cause 200 is nothing really to get rid of support for all X-box games. I think that would be more than enough.

Not being able to have more than a 100 friends on Live isn't a problem. The red ring of death and E-74 are problems. Mircosoft should be investigating real problems like those instead of trying allow a larger friend cap.

Oh, I was under the impression that Halo 2 itself was holding XBL back single handedly, I didn't realize it was the old XBL in general, which has not been taken down mostly because of Halo 2. In that case, I can't say I want to increase the cap as much as I have wanted to, because in addition to Halo 2 I have always liked going back and playing old xbox games such as the splinter cells and Rainbow Sixes in addition to Halo 2. It's really quite an interesting situation. I wonder if there will ever be some sort of system implemented where maybe once a month for a couple of says, they throw up support for an old XBL game to try and gather a large group of people to play it that one weekend, or some promotion similar to that. I don't know how possible it currently would be technologically, but if they decide to throw out support of all old games, I hope they make it possible every once in a while to go back and relive the days of Ghost Recon, Mech Assault, Unreal Championship, and ESPN NFL 2K5.

I don't really see why it matters. This isn't facebook. No one needs to have 100,000 "friends". I would guess the majority of people that have hit that cap don't play or talk to over half of them. I guess people just need a bunch of interweb friends to make them feel special :-)
